Ruby Rose Twitter Backlash

Read this on the BBC earlier

here

She has quit twitter because she got loads of abuse over accepting role of Batwoman who apparently has been a lesbian since 2006 (comic company wanted to increase diversity).

I don't really follow the article, seems twitter are angry for some reason - because she's not a lesbian or because she's gender fluid - not sure and going to google a bit more.

Just seems to me that in recent months, all of the backlash against people doing "minority" roles that are not what they are / ID as are cunty people aka those previously known as women.

This is a GNC woman as far as I can see - why shouldn't she play batwoman? We dont' normally insist on the sexuality of the actor being the same do we? And it seems she is lesbian or bi herself anyway (never heard of her will investigate).

Interesting reaction. I think she looks like she'd make a good batwoman personally from the pics.

Oh ffs
Its probs because she describes herself as gender fluid not lesbian
How ridiculous. Especially when she said she was really pleased to see a role model for girls like she was in Batwoman

NothingOnTellyAgain · 13/08/2018 12:51

From an interview;

" That's what happened to Ruby — she wasn't sure what the word for her feelings were, but she knew she wasn't attracted to the opposite sex. Instead of calling it anything, Ruby simply told her mom that her first boyfriend would probably be a girl.
"I was just worried because I didn't know it was a thing," Ruby told Willie. "I knew how I felt, I knew what I kind of identified as, but the words gay or lesbian, I didn't know anyone else that was gay or lesbian, so I didn't really know how to word it. I was just like, 'I think I should let you know that when I eventually get a boyfriend, it will be a girl.'""

Apparently though she is the "wrong queer actress".

Like I say, seems to be cunty people getting a hammering over not being in the right boxes for xyz these days.

Also if it's all about self ID and everything is fluid, anyone can play anyone, just ID as the relevant things for the period of filming. What you actually ARE is immaterial and illusory.

She's defined herself as non-binary and presumably has rejected the label lesbian - despite the fact that she married a woman. A month or so ago the internet said a woman cold not play a butch lesbian because she'd been posthumously transed into a transman. Perhaps people are reacting to this - taken to it's logical extension a non-binary person has no right to play a woman. The world is mental now isn't it?

TheCrowFromBelow · 13/08/2018 12:54

I don’t understand this at all.
Surely the whole point of acting is that you are playing a part?!
Where is the twitter backlash against The bloke who plays Thor for not actually being a Norse god?
This is getting nonsensical.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 13/08/2018 13:32

Bloke who plays Thor IDs as a norse god and I for one buy into that 1000% Wink

Is batwoman a butch lesbian? I'm guessing not as she still has to look sexy for the lads? Will check out a few pics.

Jack Whitehall has come under fire because he's playing a gay guy in a Disney film. Role should have been reserved for a gay actor, evidently. Scarlett Johansson ran into trouble as well for agreeing to play a transgender character, she gave up the role IIRC.

When you think of all the gay film stars over the years, who played romantic lead roles, it makes no sense. Actors act.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 13/08/2018 13:40

I just saw any article on fb (The Pool... again!) getting upset that Jack Whitehall had been cast as a gay character because he's straight.

Although yes, I believe Chris Hemsworth is definitely a Norse god. And Mark Ruffalo turns huge and green when he's cross.

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 13/08/2018 13:41

Sorry, Juells, cross post!

RaininSummer · 13/08/2018 13:44

This whole thing is nonsense and from the actors point of view, why should they have to disclose the sexual orientation to get work?

TheCrowFromBelow · 13/08/2018 13:47

Ah ok as long as he IDs as Norse god then that’s sorted —still a load of nonsense—
Grin

Does Tom whatshisface have Horns as well

Butch lesbian was the role that Scarlett Johansson stepped back from, not Batwoman.

NameChangedAgain18 · 13/08/2018 13:48

Does this mean that no gay actor should ever play a straight character?

deydododatdodontdeydo · 13/08/2018 13:49

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was criticised for playing a disabled character in Skyscraper while not actively being disabled. Eddie Redmayne to a lesser extent for playing Stephen Hawking.
It's not limited to women.
Like PPs though, isn't that what acting is?
Or should they have cast a real helicopter pilot instead of Meg Ryan in Top Gun?

Daxter · 13/08/2018 13:49

I think it's possibly more about gender than sexuality. If somebody who isn't trans can't be given a trans role (as seen in the major kick off around Scarlett Johansson being given a role a couple of weeks ago) then it follows that a lesbian role shouldn't be taken by somebody who isn't even a woman.

We can all see that Ruby Rose is a GNC woman but she chose to build her profile around the gender fluid/neutral/non-binary/I'm not like other women thing. She's had a lot of publicity about it and is somewhat of an icon in the trans world. I'm not surprised people are reacting to her playing a lesbian character called BatWOMAN. I'm sure reactions would be very different if she'd said 'yep, I'm a GNC lesbian woman and proud' rather than trying to opt out of womanhood.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 13/08/2018 13:50

Does this mean that no gay actor should ever play a straight character?

Now that would certainly stir things up a bit!!
Gandalf and Magneto are gay??

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 13/08/2018 13:52

I'm not sure that my mother would have made it through teenage years if Richard Chamberlain had not been allowed to play Dr Kildare!

NameChangedAgain18 · 13/08/2018 13:53

Perhaps the actor playing Falstaff at the RSC at the moment should have left the role to someone who is actually obese? Is wearing a padded costume akin to blackface? Can Richard III only be played by someone with a very specific kind of disability? Confused

Oscarino · 13/08/2018 13:55

Well I know that Riley J Dennis is upset because Ruby Rose is white. A white female, even if they are nonbinary and 'queer', obviously does not tick enough diversity boxes. I think 'white' and 'female' somehow cancel out 'non binary' and 'queer'.

TheDropBear · 13/08/2018 13:59

I've just looked at twitter for #batwoman and #recastbatwoman and can't find any saying she's not gay enough.
The main complaints seem to be that she isn't Jewish, she's a bad actor and that she outed Demi Lovato. The closest I can find is lesbians saying casting her is fanservice to get the straight audience because lots of straight woman were saying say she's their girl crush.

It must be horrible hearing all ofthe it for Ruby Rose but I don't think it's happened like she's saying. None of the news articles have screenshots either.

Bowlofbabelfish · 13/08/2018 14:06

I hear things like this and it just reminds me of the classic Laurence Olivier quote.

He was apparently reacting to Dustin Hoffman having spent three days awake on the set of marathon man as ‘method acting’ and the legend goes he said something like ‘my dear boy, why don’t you just try acting....’

HotRocker · 13/08/2018 14:14

They should have just got a real lesbian batwoman to play her, then it would have been properly authentic. Obvious really.
I think the way forward is to just have everyone playing themselves, no fictional characters at all. The film about me is going to be amazing. I almost tripped over this morning and I’m about to rearrange a dental appointment. The ratings are gonna be huge.

OlennasWimple · 13/08/2018 14:20

Well, Magneto and Gandalf are indeed gay. And Chris Hemsworth is indeed a god, though not actually Norse

But the whole blimmin point of acting is that people pretend to be something that they are not. Some people are better at doing this than others, and we recognise this. We shouldn't insist that every role is filled by someone who is actually the same as the character, that would be clearly ridiculous

thebewilderness · 14/08/2018 00:45

This qualifies as adults bullying adults, wouldn't you say?

FloralBunting · 14/08/2018 01:40

I'm up very late, and I have a head full of stuffing, but could someone confirm - Meg Ryan? In Top Gun?? As a helicopter pilot???!

thebewilderness · 14/08/2018 01:46

Courage Under Fire is the one where she played a helio pilot.
In top gun she was the wing man's wife iirc.
