Ruby Rose Twitter Backlash

Read this on the BBC earlier

here

She has quit twitter because she got loads of abuse over accepting role of Batwoman who apparently has been a lesbian since 2006 (comic company wanted to increase diversity).

I don't really follow the article, seems twitter are angry for some reason - because she's not a lesbian or because she's gender fluid - not sure and going to google a bit more.

Just seems to me that in recent months, all of the backlash against people doing "minority" roles that are not what they are / ID as are cunty people aka those previously known as women.

This is a GNC woman as far as I can see - why shouldn't she play batwoman? We dont' normally insist on the sexuality of the actor being the same do we? And it seems she is lesbian or bi herself anyway (never heard of her will investigate).

Interesting reaction. I think she looks like she'd make a good batwoman personally from the pics.

What have Scarlett Johansen and Ruby Rose got in common? They're both female.... If I didn't know any better I'd swear queer culture hates women. Silly bigoted me.

She's quit now which is great I was actually really looking forward to that spin off!

Thanks Twitter

deydododatdodontdeydo · 14/08/2018 06:46

Courage Under Fire is the one where she played a helio pilot.
Thanks for the correction Blush
As you can imagine, it was a long time ago since I saw either.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 14/08/2018 06:49

She's quit now which is great I was actually really looking forward to that spin off!

She's only quit twitter hasn't she? Or is there a new development?

PeakPants · 14/08/2018 07:17

Imagine the backlash if a gay actor was told they could not play a straight part. Neil Patrick Harris anyone? Why can actors now only play parts that correspond to their life experience?

Beamur · 14/08/2018 08:21

This is such a dumb argument! There was an article on the BBC website this week, probably still there about actors who were trans - some playing trans roles, other not. The message of the piece being that trans actors could/should be treated like any other actor - and simply act. Then you get this nonsensical hounding of actors acting roles that are, in this and the Scarlett woman, female and gay and instead of that being a cause to acknowledge you can't have a big film with not only a female lead, but a gay one. Scarlett wasn't butch or trans enough for her critics and Ruby isn't gay or Jewish enough. Ffs, even if she chooses not to call herself a lesbian she is very clearly a woman married to another woman!!! AND it's acting - which is a skilled and paid way of PRETENDING Grin

Beamur · 14/08/2018 08:24

Gah, autocorrect - CAN have a film with not only a female lead, but a lesbian.

RJnomore1 · 14/08/2018 08:35

Magneto isn't gay, he has a wife and child in one film does he not?

RJnomore1 · 14/08/2018 08:36

Anyway surely this is a clear case of discrimination on grounds of sexuality as well? Or am I just totally confused?

hazeyjane · 14/08/2018 08:49

This whole thing demonstrates how humanity is going to disappear up it's own fundament.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 14/08/2018 08:52

Magneto isn't gay, he has a wife and child in one film does he not?
So Ian McKellen shouldn't have been allowed to play the role then?

FloralBunting · 14/08/2018 10:39

Thanks for the Meg Ryan clarification. I had a long day yesterday and lots of things conspired to make me feel I was in a parallel universe!!

This is all about victim hierarchy stuff isn't it? Like the notion that it is impossible for black people to be racist because the system keeps them so far down and they do not ever have the institutional power to be racist to a white person?
So it is oppressive behaviour to cast a straight man as a gay man, but not the other way around because of the power dynamics in play? The same with a trans actor. So casting a born woman in a trans role is oppressive, but casting a transwoman as a born woman is fighting against oppression.

To my mind it's all a confusion of the justified need for fair representation and the frankly pernicious influence of identity politics. Nobody seems to value the logical application of ideas or understand nuance and subtlety anymore.

RJnomore1 · 14/08/2018 12:33

I think I've misunderstood before I had my coffee this morning and confused Gandalf with dumbeldore 😂

KittyKlaws · 14/08/2018 12:39

For feck's sake - the point of having actors is their ability to ACT in a role - to become this person when they are not that person. To be Bat woman when you are NOT in act bat woman.

All of this tantruming, stomping of feet, and beating of fists is just absolutely ridiculous and so are Hollywood for giving into this crap.

KittyKlaws · 14/08/2018 12:40

NOT actually batwoman ^

noeffingidea · 14/08/2018 13:13

I think the end result of all this is going to be celebrities coming off twitter, and those who remain will just keep it impersonal and strictly for the purpose of publicising their projects. Which is a shame, because a lot of them do like to use it to communicate directly with their fan base, but no one needs to be bullied and harrassed for simply doing their job.

ijustwannadance · 14/08/2018 13:36

Actors acting. How dare they!

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 14/08/2018 21:09

My favourite from FB today was a comment from a gay man saying "what's the problem? Tom Cruise has been playing straight men for years!".

MrGHardy · 14/08/2018 22:04

I hope people take screenshots of everyone bullying her.

I want to see every single one of those people also cry when Idris Elba becomes the new Bond.

And of course we should now start a campaign that only actual, or at least ex, athletes can play sports roles in movies and on TV. Only soldiers or ex soldiers play in war movies, etc.

SisterNotCisTerf · 14/08/2018 22:09

Hang on didn’t Ruby Rose portray a lesbian character in orange is the new Black?

WiltedDaffs · 14/08/2018 22:18

And only the Queen can play the Queen...sorry Olivia Coleman, you're out of a job.

Cwenthryth · 14/08/2018 22:42

So if Ruby Rose is the wrong subtype of gender non-conforming female human (she doesn’t deny she’s female, does she? With a name like Ruby Rose? The character she plays in The Meg is referred to as she)

..... who would be the correct subtype of gender non-confirming female? Does it have to be a butch “cisgender” lesbian, but but but, how can a “cisgender” woman be butch, that’s by definition a masculine presenting woman....🤯

Who the fuck are these people who complain about these things. As PPs have said, gay men have been acting straight for aeons. And women. And vice versa. It’s ACTING!

I’m guessing, the objection comes because if a nonbinary person can play a woman, perhaps they really are actually an actual real woman, and this threatens the whole gender/trans ideology. With, y’know, reality.

Turph · 14/08/2018 22:59

I think the way forward is to just have everyone playing themselves, no fictional characters at all. The film about me is going to be amazing. I almost tripped over this morning and I’m about to rearrange a dental appointment. The ratings are gonna be huge.
Grin

thebewilderness · 15/08/2018 00:24

As usual when people discover they have power they abuse it.
Then they will lament that no one cares what they think.

MakeItStopNeville · 15/08/2018 00:34

Nobody complained at Nick Robinson being cast as Simon in Love, Simon despite the fact that he’s straight and it would have been an opportunity for an openly gay actor playing a gay role. But he’s brilliant in that role because he’s, you know, acting dahling.

Italiangreyhound · 15/08/2018 00:53

I agree with hazeyjane "This whole thing demonstrates how humanity is going to disappear up it's own fundament."

I remember a school production of Joseph and the Technicolor dream coat. I am not sure any of those kids were Jewish or Egyptian!
