But you know - it's a careful process and everyone's needs are taken into consideration with safety at the centre of everything.

Isn't that what we were told after this will never happen happened?

powershowerforanhour · 08/08/2018 16:13

According to wikipedia, the word "yob" originated as an example of backslang- i.e."boy" spelled backwards. Reckon the DM will be in bother for misgendering poor little Stephanie?

Graham Linehan on Twitter:

"What am I in for? Oh, you know, just the kind of violent knife crime that we girls are known to enjoy."

This person probably won't bother with surgery.

You don't need to have your penis removed to be moved to a women's jail. "Undergoing gender reassignment" probably means being allowed lipstick or something. Who knows?

This person didn't bother removing their penis before they went on to assault four female inmates in a women's prison.

BettyDuMonde · 08/08/2018 16:32

Seems to be happening all the time now...

Maybe soon they’ll be so many male bodied people in women’s prisons that they’ll run out of room and have to stop jailing female bodied people for non-payment of fines?

Melamin · 08/08/2018 16:44

They need wings in male prisons for people who identify as something else. That is the only place they would be able to meet their needs. They aren't going to do that in a women's prison. (Meet their 'wants' in the more modern sense of the word, maybe.)

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 08/08/2018 16:46

It's interesting to me the responses on Graham linehan twitter.

One said it's unfair to judge all trans by the worst trans

Another said this proves Graham is right wing?

And another said don't link to the daily mail.

So criticising Graham for highlighting the story, and not commenting on the story itself. No debate is still going strong.

Popchyk · 08/08/2018 16:58

I wonder how many men have their gender identity epiphany after being charged with a violent or sexual crime but before sentencing?

I am going to suggest rather a lot.

But hey, we're not supposed to notice these things.

WaddIelikeapenguin · 08/08/2018 17:24

Pop notice what? It never happens.

Tanith · 08/08/2018 17:33

I’m also quite shocked that a violent repeat offender, with a string of previous convictions, has only received a sentence of 2 years.

Popchyk · 08/08/2018 17:34

Too true.

And forget that link I posted about the penis-owning male inmate who assaulted four women in a women's prison.

That didn't happen either.

stephLDS18 · 08/08/2018 17:40

As soon as I read this story I just new what the reaction on this board was going to be! My view on this is that no trans woman without a GRC should be housed on the female estate. It is apparent from the report of proceedings in Manchester that Stephanie is not legally female. Due to a few high profile cases a couple of years back Prison Service policy is not to convene case conferences about inmates (or potential inmates) who do not hold GRCs and to risk assess suitability for the female estate. GRC holders are held by default in the female estate. None of us are privy to the assessment carried out by HMPPS; however, looking at the index offence it seems to me the decision to place her on the female estate is "interesting" to say the least. Judges do not make the decision about placement. They sentence. It is for HMPPS to make decisions about accommodation.

Ereshkigal · 08/08/2018 17:48

I wonder what "undergoing gender re-assignment" actually means in this case.

It's a stupid meaningless phrase which he clearly thinks means some sort of surgery by his use of the word "procedure". Whether that's the case, or the judge just assumes that, because of the use of the words "gender reassignment", who knows? It shouldn't be acceptable to use the same term for the procedure that's used for people who have no intention of having it.

Fairplay for women have a long article with a great deal of information / data about trans women & the female prison estate:

fairplayforwomen.com/prison-data-confirmed/

they are also calling for an enquiry:
'Sex attacks: MPs must investigate risks of transgender prisoners'

"MPs on the Commons Justice Committee must investigate the management of transgender prisoners in female prisons after the latest report that a male-born inmate has been accused of sexually assaulting four vulnerable women behind bars, a women’s rights group has said.

The call was made by Fair Play For Women, which has repeatedly revealed disturbing evidence of the dangers posed by some transgender prisoners in the female prison system." (continues)

"Senior figures in the criminal justice system have been warning of those dangers for some time and FPFW said MPs can no longer ignore the evidence.

Others who have expressed concern include:

Andrea Albutt, president of the Prison Governors Association said in June 2018: “I have seen women feeling very threatened by transgender prisoners’ presence. Women prisoners are very vulnerable.”

Frances Crook of the Howard League, a prison reform campaign, has said that she is worried that ‘some men with a history of extreme violence and sexual violence against women have found a new way of exercising aggression towards women’.

The British Psychological Society has said this “psychologists working with forensic patients are aware of a number of cases where men convicted of sex crimes have falsely claimed to be transgender females for a number of reasons”

Dr James Barrett of the British Association of Gender Identity Specialists has said this: “It has been rather naïvely suggested that nobody would seek to pretend transsexual status in prison if this were not actually the case. There are, to those of us who actually interview the prisoners, in fact very many reasons why people might pretend this”

stephLDS18 · 08/08/2018 18:02

There would have been a pre-sentence report prepared by probation outlining exactly what treatment Stephanie was undergoing in respect of Gender Reassignment!

StealthPolarBear · 08/08/2018 18:07

"Popchyk

I wonder how many men have their gender identity epiphany after being charged with a violent or sexual crime but before sentencing?"
So cynical. I'm sure this never happens. It's just coincidence. Every time.

A key court case around placing men who (1) have a history of convictions for violent crimes and who (2) identify as women, come up in late September.

Tara Hudson will sue the Ministry of Justice for humiliation and distress caused by their decision to place Hudson in a mens' prison.

*The MoJ reportedly state in court papers that Hudson “is as a matter of biological fact a man” and add that the term “transwoman” has no legal significance. They say they have adopted female pronouns when referring to Hudson only “out of respect for her wishes”.

Despite never obtaining a GRC and being biologically male, Hudson said: “I was horrified when I read the defence from the MoJ. It states that I’m a male, which is a complete insult, humiliating and wrong because I’ve been living as a female all my adult life. I’m not a drag act.” * (Trans Crime UK website)

150,000 people signed the petition to free Hudson or place them in a womans' prison (including MPs like Tim Farron).

One to watch in late September.

Ereshkigal · 08/08/2018 18:20

Might be worth a protest outside. The GRA consultation still going on

WhereDoWeBeginToCovetClarice · 08/08/2018 18:25

Might be worth a protest outside maybe on bikes - like critical mass? Inspired by Jean Hatchet...

Ereshkigal · 08/08/2018 19:03

That sounds fantastic.

BlytheByName · 08/08/2018 19:23

Someone on Twitter is suggesting picketing women's prisons. I think that's a great idea. It would get news coverage and also let those women inside know that we see them.

WhereDoWeBeginToCovetClarice · 08/08/2018 19:27

That would be great. Smile

Fairplay for Women tweet:
"Prison rules written in 2016 with @ Genderintell must be reviewed to ensure women's safety is given proper weight.

The Equality Impact Assessment written at the time involved NO women's advocacy groups and just four lines about the impact on females. This is not good enough."
