This surely has to be a wind up.
Women statistically rarely knife anyone. How has this been allowed?
Good luck to the poor vulnerable female prisoners when they are raped or attacked.
No amount of oestrogen is going to reduce this persons violent behaviour. If they have any intention of taking it, which I doubt.

CholloDeNombre · 08/08/2018 19:43

Anne Rusylo is suggesting a picket outside the prison. I think this is a good idea. I’m worried about these women.

The Times has reported on this: www.thetimes.co.uk/article/b064fb9c-9b13-11e8-9b62-17ec317258a6

FruitCider · 08/08/2018 20:25

Someone on Twitter is suggesting picketing women's prisons. I think that's a great idea. It would get news coverage and also let those women inside know that we see them.

I work in a female estate. My patients would LOVE this. Please someone organise it!

Igneococcus · 09/08/2018 06:23

The Times has turned off the comments for that article. There were about 20 yesterday evening when I read it first and now there aren't any. That's quite unusual. I would really like to know why they thought it necessary to turn comments off.

RogerAllamsFangirl · 09/08/2018 07:32

They have just introduced a new comment system. Might be to do with that.

Igneococcus · 09/08/2018 07:48

I thought that was the reason but I can see comments for other articles.

RogerAllamsFangirl · 09/08/2018 08:19

Interesting. I saw the comments last night and there was nothing inflammatory or offensive that I noticed. No pile-on or anything.

Igneococcus · 09/08/2018 08:26

No, they were all negative but not in any way that would explain closure of the comments. I went to bed at 9pm to sleep of a migraine, so maybe it all happened after I stopped reading.

R0wantrees · 09/08/2018 08:48

Perhaps waiting for moderation to be back? Sometimes articles that are posted at midnight are frozen to comments until after 9am. I think the Times use pre-moderating.

The Twitter link is still open to comments though:

AngryAttackKittens · 09/08/2018 09:19

(Waits to see if the usual TRA commenters go with "she's still a woman!" or "no true trans".)

R0wantrees · 09/08/2018 09:59

The article is now showing comments.

PippaPepperpot · 09/08/2018 10:12

Instead of forcing women to accept males in their estates shouldn't we be forcing men to accept other men who may have different gender identities? It's always women. Men never have to deal with this.

Also, if a woman was undergoing gender reassignment at the same time as being sentenced, would she be sent to a male prison? I highly doubt it.

JellySlice · 09/08/2018 10:29

150,000 people signed the petition to free Hudson or place them in a womans' prison (including MPs like Tim Farron).

And less than one tenth of that number think that women should be consulted over the proposed change in law to Self ID..*

Depressing.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/08/2018 10:30

Really depressing.

Ereshkigal · 09/08/2018 10:36

Depressing.

Because most of the people who signed were thoughtless, virtue signalling useful idiots misled and manipulated by the press and social media.

Ereshkigal · 09/08/2018 10:38

They didn't think about female prisoners because female feelings and experiences aren't considered important in our structurally sexist/misogynistic society.

JellySlice · 09/08/2018 10:52

But nobody cares who or what the voters were. All anyone will see is that most people think that male bodies in female spaces are a good thing, and that asking for female opinions about it is unnecessary.

wacademia · 09/08/2018 10:52

This actually happened in the States, but I don't have the reference to hand. (It's in the introduction to a book in work's library.)

NicoAndTheNiners · 09/08/2018 10:58

If there's a picket organised can someone pls message me details. I would love to come. Feel very strongly about this.

LaSquirrel · 09/08/2018 10:59

Maybe soon they’ll be so many male bodied people in women’s prisons that they’ll run out of room and have to stop jailing female bodied people for non-payment of fines?
We can only hope Betty.

They didn't think about female prisoners because female feelings and experiences aren't considered important in our structurally sexist/misogynistic society.
Agreed Eresh.

Also, in respect to both comments above, female estates are spread far and wide across the country. That might inconvenience the LadyCrims?

R0wantrees · 09/08/2018 11:04

June 2nd 2018 Mail on Sunday article:

'As more trans women who were convicted as men hope to follow rapist Martin Ponting into female wings, prison governors fear vulnerable inmates could be attacked
-Theresa May pledged last year to make simpler for people to change gender
-Transgender activists demanding it be achieved by announcing self-identity
-Anonymous governor says vulnerable women in prison could be intimidated"

Francis Crook is quoted:

"Ms Crook, executive director of the Howard League for Penal Reform, added: ‘These men are not transitioning because they like women and want to be a woman, but in order to exert a new kind of control and dominance over women, a sort of infiltration.

‘Moreover, the process is inherently discriminatory. A woman identifying as a man could not be transferred to a man’s jail because placing a person with female attributes into a prison to live with 1,000 men, all using communal showers and living areas, would put them in serious danger."

150,000 people signed the petition to free Hudson or place them in a womans' prison (including MPs like Tim Farron)

this was the petition started by Ceri Jenkins:

(extract)
"Trans campaigners estimate that there are between 20 and 30 trans individuals in UK prisons at any time, and that they are some of the most at-risk members of the incarceration system. In fact, transgender women in male prisons are 13 times more likely to be sexually assaulted than in the general population, with 59 percent reporting sexual assaults, according to a frequently cited US study.

According to Amnesty International, globally, LGBT prisoners and those perceived to be LGBT, are at risk of torture, ill-treatment and violence from other inmates as well as prison officials.

Trans people are also at a much higher risk of mental health issues than the rest of the populace. In 2014, a survey found that 48% of trans people under 26 said they had attempted suicide, and 30% said they had done so in the past year, while 59% said they had at least considered doing so. By comparison, about 6% of all 16- to 24-year-olds say they have attempted suicide, according to the Adult Psychiatry Morbidity Survey."

I know. Any suggestions? Petition against putting a man like this into a female prison perhaps? I think more would sign.

Ereshkigal · 09/08/2018 11:18

In 2014, a survey found that 48% of trans people under 26 said they had attempted suicide,

That will be of the 27 self selected people they interviewed.
