Like that's the only bit of the story that they are concerned about.

I think it reflects the lack of sympathy for women in prisons. I've seen many argue that if women want to be safe in prisons they shouldn't commit crimes in the first place.

It could also reflect people's obsession with the NHS. Don't doubt people's ability to change any subject to one they would rather talk about. I'm surprised there isn't a Brexit comment.

It's hardly an obsession when so many people are receiving inadequate care due to budget cuts. It's hardly surprising that people object to prisoners (or anyone really) receiving hormone therapy and surgery that is not seen as life saving, when other people might actually be dying because they're not been referred quickly enough (just as an example).
Men who identify as women being placed in female prisons is a major sticking point amongst the general public, especially if the TWhas been convicted of sexual offences. The other major sticking point is transing of children.
