It is a sobering and distressing fact that in UK surveys of trans people about half of young people and a third of adults report that they have attempted suicide.

Someone - wasn't this proved to be a false claim?

Mossandclover · 06/08/2018 10:58

You only register with the charity commission if you are a charity - being a charity comes with some red tape so a lot of groups may not bother. I am a member of a couple of groups where the decision so far has been nor to register as a charity to save the hassle (we have no money/ don't fund raise either)

Mossandclover · 06/08/2018 11:04

*It is very sobering that in a survey of people who could be from anywhere in the world but on a UK generated website for TRA, that half of responses from a very small number of self-selecting individuals who were looking online for support and claimed to be young say they had attempted suicide"

jgrobinson · 06/08/2018 11:13

UK Trans Info—R0wantrees

You don't have to register as a charity if your annual income is under £5k.

But if you are that small and informal, you surely have no business advising public bodies.

heresyandwitchcraft · 06/08/2018 11:15

Vicky, I would recommend having a peek at Transgender Trend regarding the statistics for young people:

www.transgendertrend.com/the-suicide-myth/

R0wantrees · 06/08/2018 11:24

There is a parliamentary 'lobbying Tsar', Alison White. There has been / is (?) an enquiry into APPGs but the the limited scope of the role has been criticised:
www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/jan/06/lobbying-inquiry-registrar-parliamentary-secretaries

www.publicaffairsnews.com/articles/news/mps-concern-over-lobbying-tsar

The lobbying register was assessed as 'failing' disclosure tests by this group:
www.alter-eu.org/lobby-transparency-across-the-eu

Interestingly, just before he took power back in 2010, David Cameron described lobbying as “the next big scandal waiting to happen”

Another for the list of 'things Cameron knew were not a good idea but carried on with regardless', then.

Yes I'm aware of charity regs.

UK Trans Info describe themselves as a charity on their website, that's why I looked at the Charities Commission.

Their submissions are given some weight in the NHS document linked.

heresyandwitchcraft · 06/08/2018 11:35

I am not necessarily saying there is anything untoward, and I am sure this has already been brought up. I am just finding it curious as to what the status of these organizations are, and the financials of this whole thing.

As screenshot before, Action for Trans Health's 2015-16 Financial Report published on their website in May 2017 says their Solidarity Fund raised £11,041 in in the financial year Aug 2016 to Aug 2016. On the next slide they mention they got almost an extra £5,000 since the end of financial year (August).
actionfortranshealth.org.uk/tag/solidarity-fund/

But then if you look at their financial statement on Companies House, the micro-accounting for that same year appears to list their assets as £0?

beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/09196863/filing-history
(See entry on 17th May 2017, page 2)

Presumably the goal of the money raised by is to redistribute the funds, but how does this work in terms of book-keeping?

And as has been pointed out before, ATH is fulfilling their promise of donating funds to trans people.

I think as well as the ATH solidarity fund which gives annual grants, there seems to also be a separate travel expenses fund giving bursaries exclusively to transwomen / transfemme (?)

heresyandwitchcraft · 06/08/2018 11:52

And their most recent financial statement (to Aug 2017) on Companies House lists their total assets as £137.

beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/09196863/filing-history

See entry 31st May 2018 page 2.

Again, I am sharing this because I find it confusing. I apologize if I am misreading this or misrepresenting it. There might be a very obvious explanation that I am missing.

ATH is fulfilling their promise of donating funds to trans people

In a previous year this was described as being over subscribed.
It would be interesting to know if this was again the case (as seems likely) how applicants were assessed and by whom.

R0wantrees · 06/08/2018 11:55

heresy it may be that they have ringfenced the solidarity fund.

heresyandwitchcraft · 06/08/2018 11:55

Indeed, I would like to know the policy for this.

PersistAunt · 06/08/2018 13:09

Will there be a clear ATH audit trail of donations out? Think what brought down Kidscape/Camila Batmanghelidjh and the trustees - it was all the cash payments. She was doing it the only way she thought she could with such chaotic young people, but the lack of records forced closure. If those helped trans people live such chaotic lives that they need charity, it could be that No Questions Asked is the way ATH has to operate.
.

ATH comment:

heresyandwitchcraft · 06/08/2018 13:51

I guess my real question is what are the rules that apply/where is the oversight if an organization isn't registered with the Charity Commission but has articles of association for a charitable company?
ATH apparently amended articles of incorporation to become such a "Charitable Company," in July 2016. If their finances for the fund are what they say, then it does look like ATH are handling sums of money that exceed £5000 per annum.
Again, this might all be very normal, I am just wondering how this adds up.
Action for Trans Health are influential, like you say, in lobbying and being used as "experts" in a sense by the Government.

Sorry to jump in without reading the thread (although I’ve been scanning it). Have any of you come across NAMBLA or Richard Green in your research?

MaidOfStars · 06/08/2018 13:54

Link to NAMBLA

R0wantrees · 06/08/2018 14:35

Maid There have been a number of recent threads which you may more relevent:
ThatDoctorEM has posted on & has a great deal of expertise:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3318615-Pedophile-Manifesto

OlennasWimple · 06/08/2018 14:36

Maid - I feel a bit queasy reading that link Envy

Is there a reason you think there may be a connection?

dontbringmedown · 06/08/2018 14:49

How can one person be so busy and involved in all these different companies . It seems very strange and different things in different names. What exactly are all these companies?

There needs to be much stricter background checks on these people.
Obviously in their rush to be seen as 'inclusive', proper safeguarding procedures aren't being adhered to.

BettyDuMonde · 06/08/2018 14:53

I’ve been aware of NAMBLA for decades due to Jim Goad and ANSWER ME! (A bad taste punk rock publication in the same mold as Apocalypse Culture/Feral House Books) but was under the impression that a) a lot of the original organisers are super elderly/passed away and b) the internet has made their practices easier and their organisations looser.

For lurkers/casual readers, NAMBLA (North American Man Boy Love Association) is the USA version of the UK’s PIE (Paedophile Information Exchange) and both had their heyday in the 70s/80s.

There is no allegation that JB or any of the other named Trans organisers on this thread are involved or affiliated with these groups, only that JB’s personal blog contained references to similar interests and possibly some underage followers/participants (although ages have not been verified).

There has been reasonably widespread discussion on Mumsnet/twitter and elsewhere regarding grooming techniques and safeguarding and how the methods employed can be compared - no actual allegations are being made, however.
