Vicky Its noticeable that at no point in the section is the privacy dignity or safety of other patients referred to.

Curtains in 'single sex' hospital wards do not afford privacy and dignity.

Also note that the policy is for 'any person who intends to transition', also includes those 'who live continuously or temporarily in the gender role that is opposite to their natal sex'.

"They must be accommodated according to their presentation - the way they dress and the name and pronouns that they
currently use."

finally,
"where admission/triage staff are unsure of a person’s gender, they should, where possible, ask discreetly where the person would be most comfortably accommodated. They should then comply with the patient’s preference immediately, or as soon as practicable."

This workshop on trans people and cancer (2016) led by Tara Hewitt is important as she describes the extent of her work and influence i(refers to working with Action for Trans Health)

Tara describes that trans is an umbrella term and says "nothing to do with surgery. It is just them saying this is them" She includes drag queens, fetishistic cross dressers, can be part-time, gender queer.

Absolutely agree.

Mum was placed in assessment units a couple of times and although she was only in them for a maximum of about 36 hours, the fact that men were in the same small room (6 beds) with her distressed her greatly. She was 80, dying slowly of cancer and felt extremely vulnerable.

As you say, curtains afford patients little to no dignity - whenever I was visiting and they pulled a curtain round just to talk to my mum, I sometimes commented "Ah, the magic curtain which blocks out all sound!" - and more than once I heard some extremely personal and intimate issues being discussed with other patients.

I am minded of the suggested 'curtain solution' in the case of women allegedly sexually harrassed in the showers of a 'women only' homeless project in California:

Nine homeless women signed on to a lawsuit against Naomi's House, saying the shelter forced them to shower with a person who identified as a transgender woman and sexually harassed them.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A prominent Fresno charity, homeless women, and the transgender community all say they're experiencing a nightmare come true.

Nine women homeless women signed on to a lawsuit against Naomi's House and its parent company, the Poverello House, saying the last place they could go to feel safe is now dangerous because they're forced to shower with a transgender woman.

The Naomi House bills itself as a gentle haven of healing and a safe haven for single, homeless women, but a new lawsuit says it put a lot of women in harm's way in a very vulnerable spot -- the shower.

It says the shelter requires them to shower in groups, and it opened its doors to a person who identified themself as a transgender woman who made lewd and sexually inappropriate comments, and leered at them while they were naked.

"This is the biggest fear they bring up, that you're going to have people who may not even be transgender in bathrooms and settings where people are naked and their privacy rights are being violated," said Peter Kapetan, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the women.

Poverello House administrators tell Action News federal law says they have to treat a person identifying as a woman as a woman -- and there's no way to test whether it's true. (continues)

They say they take allegations of bullying or sexual harassment seriously, but for privacy reasons can't reveal what actions they may have taken.

Naomi's House has had good experiences before with at least one transgender woman.

"The staff was extremely accommodating," said Michelle Nastasis, a transgender professional poker player who stayed at Naomi's House a couple years ago. "In fact, we worked out a system where none of the girls would be offended when I went to take a shower."

Nastasis says she got along with some of the women who filed the lawsuit and everybody treated her with respect. She joins them in questioning whether the person accused of sexual harassment is being honest about their status as a transgender woman

Legal analyst Tony Capozzi says the status is protected and the person's claim puts the charity in a tough spot.

"It may be because they're afraid of violating civil rights that they're not doing anything," Capozzi said. "But I think it's incumbent on Naomi's House to do something about this individual that's there - not because (the person) is transgender, but because (the person) sexually harassed other people."

The women say they repeatedly complained to staff members, but were told if they didn't respect the person's decision to identify as a woman, and if they refused to take showers at the same time, they'd get kicked out of the shelter. (continues)

concludes:
"This is like their last safe haven to go to," Kapetan said. "If they're not there, they're out on the streets and like one of them told me, the streets are dangerous here in Fresno."

Leaders in the Valley's transgender community tell us this is a nightmare for them too because if someone who calls herself a transgender woman is sexually harassing people, she put an already marginalized community in a bad light.

Karen Adell Scot, a local transgender advocate, even offered to train Naomi's House employees on how to recognize people just pretending to identify as the opposite gender.

One possible solution is already in place: Poverello House administrators say they added shower curtains about four months ago.

The lawsuit is due for a hearing in August."

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/04/11/nhs-launches-sexual-abuse-probe-amid-fears-dangers-mixed-sex/

NHS watchdogs have launched a national review of sexual abuse in hospitals amid fears patients are being put at risk on mixed sex wards.

Inspectors have warned hospital trusts to do more to protect patients, after a trawl found more than 900 sexual incidents, including assault and harassment, recorded on mental health wards in just three months.

R0wantrees · 05/08/2018 17:37

VickyEadie As you say, I think the added levels of anxiety and vulnerability when someone is already distressed is really significant. It matters a great deal and should really be taken seriously with care and respect.

Wow, that is an awful lot of incidents going on there. And they are going to make it a whole lot easier for these fetishists to access women and young people. Why can't anyone see what is happening?

Sorry to go back to an earlier point but I've been doing some reading about the Scottish Trans Alliance attendee to the TELI inaugural conference, Becky Kent/Becky Kauffman. It is the same person, not 2 different people, and the information on this person is interesting.

From this article (2014) http://www.kaleidoscot.com/scotland-conference-legacy-transgender-intersex-rights-2015

It states "Becky joined the Scottish Transgender Alliance full time in May, 2014 as a research associate, after completing her second master’s degree in social research as a sociologist. Her work covers the whole spectrum of equalities issues for trans and intersex people. She places a special focus on promoting trans researchers and research into trans social issues."

This link to https://genderidentitywatch.com/2014/01/03/becky-kent-scotland/ gives more background to who they are.

They are also quoted in this Scottish Trans Alliance pdf as a Trans activist https://www.scottishtrans.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Equal-Recognition-Briefing.pdf

It's interesting that James Morton is the public face of Scottish Trans Alliance while Becky (who took part in the inaugural TELI conference) has managed to stay under the radar pretty much.

thebewilderness · 05/08/2018 20:50

So that would be father of 8 Becky Kent/Becky Kauffman?

thebewilderness · 05/08/2018 20:51

Bit of an aside but the tradition of women working to put their husbands through school only to be dumped when the d00d achieves his goal is on my last effing nerve.

LeiaTheSlaya · 05/08/2018 20:53

That's the one.

thebewilderness · 05/08/2018 20:54

"The special adviser is a vital role which helps parliament consider a balanced and appropriate range of evidence, to ensure an unbiased process. It is critical this person is someone who can bring an open, unbiased perspective to the role, so much so that including something along those lines would usually be included in the job description for the role."
Selecting a lobbyist for this position is a blatant violation of the purpose of the role as well as common sense.

thebewilderness · 05/08/2018 21:03

It appears that the NHS is just one of many who have been victims of fraud perpetrated by transgender advocates.
"See TELI Co-founder Tara Hewitt's report for UHSM which records data on 'gender' and 'trans' as 'protected characteristics':"

Gender and trans are NOT protected characteristics under the EA2010
Gender reassignment is.
As is sex.

"It seems inconceivable that Tara Hewitt was not aware of the 9 protected characteristics of the 2010 Equalities Act."

We all need to continue to contact Councils, businesses, charities, and organizations, providing them with the accurate text of the Equality Act to ensure that they are not victims of this widespread fraud and give them an opportunity to correct their policies if they were.

There has been an action to do this with local councils for a while, with varying degrees of success.

It would be good to widen this to other orgs.

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 05/08/2018 21:09

There was a MN thread on it IIRC.

thebewilderness · 05/08/2018 21:30

I am very sceptical about these awards since MM got a pink one, presumably for her report. They seem very manipulative to me.

You are right to be skeptical.
In many cases the awards and consultations are astroturf shells of their own creation.

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 05/08/2018 21:55

Here's the thread on contacting councils:

Does your Local Authority Equality Policy exclude sex as a protected characteristic?

Here's the spreadsheet keeping track of which councils include sex as a protected characteristic and which don't.

Anyone fancy starting a thread to look at other types of business / org?

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 05/08/2018 23:06

Has JB committed a crime?

I think there was underage porn on his blog, is that right? So that's a crime, right?

Is posting pics of your erect dick online also a crime? Or an admission of a crime, perhaps, if done in public like JB did.

Would the police be interested? Do we trust the NUS to turn the evidence over to them?

ChattyLion · 05/08/2018 23:31

Raisins agree it would be really helpful to extend this beyond local authorities.

For example: the venerable charity Girl Guiding UK, set up to benefit girls and women.. doesn’t have sex on its equality Hmm policy.

That is really bizarre and not in accordance with good practice and clear safeguarding needed of the female children that GGUK are setting out to benefit.

(Recent GGUK policy appears to be more interested in benefiting feminine conforming children and teenagers- of both sexes- rather than benefiting female children and teenagers in line with their history and founding principles- not to mention the single-sex expectations of most people including Guides and their parents..).

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit - It would be good to widen this to other orgs

The one that shocked me the most was the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

As a statutory non-departmental public body established by the Equality Act 2006, the Commission operates independently. We aim to be an expert and authoritative organisation that is a centre of excellence for evidence, analysis and equality and human rights law. We also aspire to be an essential point of contact for policy makers, public bodies and business.

And they can't even reliably quote the protected characteristics. How shit is that?

They were challenged and have now made a statement.

ChattyLion · 05/08/2018 23:40

Argh EHRC... glad they are reviewing their own use of ‘gender’ and ‘sex’ but... FFS. How had they ever got into this position of thinking that those terms are interchangeable?!

There’s also various eg NHS bodies who do correctly list ‘sex’ as a protected characteristic, but then in their activities or published work they would seem not to see the difference in practice:

Some discussion on this thread:
