I also thought the privacy thing only related to police investigations and how the press could report those investigations (or not).

Not around things like internal investigations by the NUS.

Of course the police may already be involved in Bradley's case.

Or does it mean that newspapers may be prevented from reporting on issues that may in the future lead to police investigations? Which probably covers just about everything that a newspaper would report on.

Not All Men Are Like That

Melamin · 31/07/2018 14:09

This is a great thread. I will be happy to see parts 3 and 4.

Does anyone have any links that explain the ruling in the Cliff Richard case. I know it does not seem to bear any relationship to this self-publicised own goal, but it depends on what the point of law of the actual ruling was.

PissedOffWoman · 31/07/2018 14:17

I am reading a book at the moment written by an American Psychologist who specialised in treating victims of sex abuse. She has spent decades interviewing and studying child abusers, rapists, sadists and psychopaths. The book is probably one of the most difficult and harrowing books I have ever read and I have had to take many breaks from it as it is so distressing.

She has stated and proved over and over again that there is nothing that these people won't do to get what they want. They play "the long game" to gain access to their victims, sometimes waiting years to get what they want. The grooming, manipulating and deceiving of everyone involved is all part of the game in which they get immense satisfaction and a perverse pleasure from.

They often work hard to get into positions of power which can involve extensive training, time spent gaining trust, breaking down boundaries etc, in order to achieve their evil aims. They have infinite patience as it all feeds their perverse desires. They are opportunists and are brilliant at seeing every way to manipulate situations to their own advantage.

The priests, teachers, charity workers, scout leaders, etc, etc, etc, that have been convicted of these crimes worked very hard to be in the positions they were in to access their victims. They befriend, flatter,
reward, groom, ensure they are beyond suspicion, test and push boundaries, manipulate, use, threaten, frighten, control etc, not just the intended victims but their families, friends, coworkers and anyone that is deemed useful to help them achieve their final goal.

From what she has written they are far more prevalent than we imagine. The ones that are caught are only the tip of the iceberg. It would be sadly very naive of us to think that these predators will not be latching on to the current situation as it will appear to be a perfect opening to them. They do not care who they use or hurt in their quest to abuse. They will not care the damage they will do to the LGBT+ community, the safety or rights of women and children. They do not care of the destruction they will leave behind in their wake to genuine trans women and men. They will not stop until they have hurt a great many people or are caught.

We need safeguards to protect women, children, genuine trans women and men, confused and questioning teen-agers, the lgbt community and everyone who is vulnerable to these evil people.

Yes, it all rather passed me by, the Cliff Richard thing. But I'd be interested to know more if anyone has the time or the inclination to expand on it.

And of course we know all about Jess now, so that particular horse has bolted. Cliff did not save Jess. In fact, Cliff may have brought more attention to Jess, thus throwing Jess under the red double decker summer holiday bus. Horses and buses.

More Cliff info.

More Jess info.

Dozens of new threads needed, I'm guessing.

UpstartCrow · 31/07/2018 14:22

PissedOffWoman Is that Predators by Anna Salter? It should be required reading imo.

Ereshkigal · 31/07/2018 14:32

Interesting chat featuring Tara Hewitt about incitement to hatred laws. Everything seems to be incitement to hatred for them though...

This was discussed in the oral evidence from 2015 to the Miller Inquiry. The section with Helen Belcher.

The Law Society Gazette report on the Cliff Richard case is worth a read:

You can read the judge's summary of his ruling here:

Not All Trans Are Like That

Melamin · 31/07/2018 14:45

In fact, Cliff may have brought more attention to Jess, thus throwing Jess under the red double decker summer holiday bus. Horses and buses I was wondering how to get red double decker buses into it Star

Thank you Hackmum - I will read and try and understand.

PissedOffWoman · 31/07/2018 14:45

I absolutely was not talking about trans people. Nowhere did I say that. I absolutely do not think that.

I was talking about predators who will see the current situation as a means to use it for their own nefarious reasons.

Melamin · 31/07/2018 14:46

In fact, Cliff may have brought more attention to Jess, thus throwing Jess under the red double decker summer holiday bus. Horses and buses

bold fail

Melamin · 31/07/2018 14:47

Freudian slip or something, BeUpStanding Grin

PissedOffWoman · 31/07/2018 14:47

Sorry BeUpstanding, I misunderstood. You were explaining what the acronym meant.

PissedOffWoman · 31/07/2018 14:56

UpstartCrow yes it is. I have had it sitting in my book collection for a long time and have only just read it.

I don't know if I would advise anyone to read it without warning them that it is a very difficult read. I have had to put it down and read something else inbetween as it is incredibly upsetting in many parts.

To understand that there are people with so little regard for other humans is an sobering thing indeed. To realise that there are so many of them is absolutely terrifying.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 31/07/2018 15:02

Anna Salter is the best... she so outs the heinous tactics of predators and articulates well the escalation from flasher and voyeur to a rapist.

I just recall the stats - for each paedophile in jail, they have committed an average of 4000 crimes on an average of 350 victims (correct me if I'm wrong as this is from memory).

Every bloody politician and anybody in any position of power around kids should be forced to read this book and put in place appropriate safeguarding frameworks that includes themselves being assessed and subject to those same frameworks - a hard but necessary read.

Pratchet · 31/07/2018 15:02

Helen Belcher of Trans Media Watch

VickyEadie · 31/07/2018 15:06

Have just ordered the Anna Salter book.

Popchyk · 31/07/2018 15:21

Thanks for that info, hackmum.

Will read.

HeresIdea852 · 31/07/2018 15:23

I wonder why the NUS feels the need for a specific Trans Officer when it has two LGBT+ Officers ?

LemonJello · 31/07/2018 15:27

How long do you think the NUS investigation should take?

Pythagonal · 31/07/2018 15:34

I reckon they'll sit on it until they think we've forgotten, or announce it on a bad news day, hoping it'll go unreported.

Cynical, moi? Hmm

HeresIdea852 · 31/07/2018 15:40

www.nusconnect.org.uk/resources/disciplinary-and-capability-procedure If this is the current version, it is remarkably thin and short on timescales. If the investigation finds sufficient to hold a hearing and the person concerned continues to fight their corner then I wouldn't be surprised if up to six months before a public announcement on outcome.

LemonJello · 31/07/2018 15:45

Great to know, thanks both.

I’m sure we’ll find plenty to chat about while we wait Wink

LangCleg · 31/07/2018 15:48

The pervy flasher who gets their cock out in parks and at bus stops where kids might see them is a universal hate figure in this country.

Parents keep an eye out for such people hanging around the school gates when they are picking up and dropping off their kids.

If these allegations prove founded and if the public get a whiff that they are not allowed to know about such a person who is also in a position to advise government about women's rights and the treatment of gender questioning children, this will not end well. This is how other backlashes have started.

And that's before we even get to the part of trying to persuade the public that sometimes this pervy flashing is a natural part of a female sexuality.
