The snake eats its tail: Twitter furious that Scar Jo is playing a trans man in next movie

It's been announced Scarlett Johansson is going to play a trans-man in an upcoming film called Rub & Tug.

Apparently Scar-Jo dressing up as a man and a trans woman in the film is offensive "trans face" according to lots of people losing their heads on Twitter.

The irony is utterly breathtaking...

Sorry second paragraph all confused there. To be clear, she's playing a trans man in the film http://screencrush.com/scarlett-johansson-rub-tug-trans-man-movie/?trackback=twittermobiletop

The irony is overwhelming.

RJnomore1 · 03/07/2018 19:35

I'm honestly lost here

She's playing a trans man means she's playing a woman who identified as male am I correct?

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 03/07/2018 19:37

Yes I confused myself and made a mistake in the second paragraph

I just want to laugh.

The Womanface crew are jumping out of their prams. Aww, diddums.

Why do they care, anyway? Id have thought their spontaneous combustion trigger would be a man playing a Transwoman. Or do I mean a woman playing a Transwoman? Today has been very confusing 😕

I love Scarlett Johansson in films, great actress

NameChangedAgain18 · 03/07/2018 19:38

Maybe she self-identifies as trans? I mean, that should be possible, right? Isn't it trans-privilege and literal violence to claim that cis women can't be trans?

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 03/07/2018 19:38

Should read:

"Apparently Scar-Jo dressing up as a woman and subsequently a trans man in the film is offensive "trans face" according to lots of people losing their heads on Twitter.

Yes RJ, she is.

Talk about damned if you do and damned if you don't - every fucking thing is a huge pity party to some people. FFS.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 03/07/2018 19:38

Their heads would have exploded over the Bob Dylan film then wouldn't they?

Maybe people expect method acting here?

VodkaRevelation · 03/07/2018 19:42

Did anyone complain when Eddie Redmayne played a trans woman in The Danish Girl?

AnOpinion · 03/07/2018 19:44

Ghost in the shell had the same reaction. Maybe she is trans gender and trans race?

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 03/07/2018 19:44

It reminds me of the mess that saw Jeffrey Tambor booted from Transparent.

Now don't get me wrong Tambor sounds like an asshole but from this in-depth article it sounds like he was fired because he wasn't trans: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/features/lines-got-blurred-jeffrey-tambor-an-up-close-look-at-harassment-claims-transparent-1108939

I don't understand. Sad

Did they want a man to play a transman? Or someone who has a vagina but feels male?

Genuinely struggling to understand this one!

SumerisIcumenin · 03/07/2018 19:46

Well, she can self-identify as trans for the time it takes to make the film and then decide what she feels like afterwards.

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 03/07/2018 19:47

They did Vodka

It's quite hard to keep straight isn't it (no pun intended)?

If you put on certain clothes and claim you're a certain gender you are that gender and no one can question you (although you mean sex rather than gender).

If you put on certain clothes and claim to be portraying someone of the same sex but who claims to be a different gender (although they mean sex) for artistic purposes that's offensive.

"Did anyone complain when Eddie Redmayne played a trans woman in The Danish Girl?"

Yes - an awful lot.

But then the actor in orange is the new black who is trans (not seen it and don't know much about it) played frank n furter in rocky horror show remake (why why why????????? so many awful remakes of perfect things at the moment) and no-one seemed to mind even though frank was(is) a man - a transvesite - and 100% a male character. So how can frank be played by a woman? (trans women are women). Makes no sense at all.

NameChangedAgain18 · 03/07/2018 19:48

Just out of interest, was there a similar furore when Eddie Redmayne donned "trans face" in the Danish Girl?

Or is the problem again, with a woman doing something?

NameChangedAgain18 · 03/07/2018 19:49

Ooops, sorry, cross posted. Ignore.

SardinesAreYum · 03/07/2018 19:49

Meanwhile panto season every year we have men dressing up in enormous comedy breasts and doing over the top characatures (sp) of women and everyone is HAHAHA brilliant.

SPOFS · 03/07/2018 19:49

So trans women are women, but only trans women can play trans women? If trans women are exactly the same as natal women, then why can't natal women play them?

No logical consistency, yet again.

Mumsnut · 03/07/2018 19:50

Rapid Onset, perhaps?

RJnomore1 · 03/07/2018 19:51

I think my head just exploded.

PositivelyPERF · 03/07/2018 20:10

I think my head just exploded

No that was just your lady brain. 😁
