PN guy said people were more supportive of gay rights than transgender rights. If he bothered to engage his brain, he might realise that's because gay rights don't take rights away from other people, so we can all support them without losing out ourselves.

What does it mean to support or oppose transgender rights? Transgender people should have human rights, the same as everyone else. Opposing the right of transwomen to have access to women's spaces is not a denial of rights to transgender people, it is upholding women's right to a single-sex space. Transwomen can campaign for their own spaces. Supporting the right of transwomen to be treated as women in all circumstances is a denial of women's right to single-sex spaces.

Framing this as a transgender rights issue is incorrect. Nobody is advocating the removal of rights for transgender people. The transgender lobbyists are, however, advocating the removal of rights from women. This is a women's rights issue.

Pink News on and I'm shouting at him...

This this this. Which is why it was so outrageous that no one thought until this point that we should be consulted on it.

Ereshkigal · 01/07/2018 12:43

It interesting that the Man Friday women were described as 'activists' whilst Jane Fae and the editor of Pink News were not....

Very. Which is why they should have had a gender critical journalist like Sarah Ditum or Janice Turner on too.

heresyandwitchcraft · 01/07/2018 12:43

Thanks for including the complaints link, Pratchet. Duly used.

Ereshkigal · 01/07/2018 12:43

The distaste in Butterworth's tone when he said "these women".

R0wantrees · 01/07/2018 12:51

a bit reminscent of 'so called feminists' Maria Miller MP comment:

heresyandwitchcraft · 01/07/2018 12:56

I hate that people are smearing Man Friday or any of the feminists who are speaking up. They have done SO much to bring this issue into the light, and the activism is working. So very grateful to you fellas and ladies, THANK YOU! StarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStarStar

Pratchet · 01/07/2018 13:01

Maybe I was wrong to say complain. It wasn't that bad, and it's a long way from #nodebate.

Is it Benjamin Butterworth, the Pink News guy?

The same white bloke who pretended to be black in order to take up a BAME spot at a conference?

Pratchet · 01/07/2018 13:02

Lol x post heresy

No yes the transracial! O my lord!

OP posts:
Ereshkigal · 01/07/2018 13:06

Also, why are they presenting Pink News as serious journalism? Ridiculous internet clickbait.

Complained.

Ereshkigal · 01/07/2018 13:06

This. Tweet it far and wide.

heresyandwitchcraft · 01/07/2018 13:08

Lol! Pratchet
I hear completely that it was better than nothing, and I am grateful they've at least covered it. But I genuinely think they could've done much better with the interview segment. Also, I suspect they will get complaints from trans activists for even daring to feature ManFriday, so I might as well let my licence-fee-paying female viewpoint be heard.

Popchyk · 01/07/2018 13:10

Original thread about Benjamin's transracial identity.

Mumsnet link

heresyandwitchcraft · 01/07/2018 13:13

Is this the same guy? I thought the Pink News chap on Sunday Politics just now is Benjamin Cohen? (Or sorry, did I just assume their gender?)

Abouttoblow · 01/07/2018 13:17

Why roll out that idiot from PN?

And who knew that trans people don't want to go swimming?

Nothing to worry about re changing rooms then.

That's a relief! We were all worried about nothing.

FFS!!!!!

ClosdesMouches · 01/07/2018 13:27

YY heresy. I don't know either Butterworth or Cohen but the name onscreen during the broadcast was definitely 'Benjamin Cohen'.

ScarletBegonias · 01/07/2018 13:32

It's apparent from Twitter that TRAs are complaining to the BBC about 'transphobic bigots' being given airtime on the Sunday Politics - so I guess it makes sense for the BBC to get complaints from the GC side too.

R0wantrees · 01/07/2018 13:32

Im fairly sure that Jane Fae's comment after the first ManFriday was that it took so much for trans women to go swimming, how important this was and that ManFriday's actions would be detrimental to the progress made (eg Swim England /Hampstead Pools] self-id policies)

Procrastinator1 · 01/07/2018 13:55

There is a Ben Cohen listed as a journalist for Pink News. His photo doesn't look like the person from Pink News on the Sunday Politics. That person does look like the photo of Benjamin Butterworth from Pink News. Has Butterworth changed his name, did the BBC make a mistake or is he identifying as Cohen?

R0wantrees · 01/07/2018 13:57

Wasn't there a recent wedding? I have a memory of someone from PN marrying their partner who was involved with the NHS ... (not a very clear memory)
