Had a reply from CRUK re "cervix havers"

(Longstanding donor, I emailed them following this article: www.thetimes.co.uk/article/smear-test-campaign-drops-the-word-woman-to-avoid-transgender-offence-263mj7f6s?shareToken=84b68d81ce844a6f55b8e64b9a36757b)

The meat of their reply as follows.

================
We want to make it clear that this is not about disengaging women from the screening programme, or eradicating the word women. It’s our duty to make sure that everyone who is eligible for this screening programme knows about it. Research shows that cervical screening prevents at least 2,000 cervical cancer deaths each year in the UK so it is vital that we raise awareness that Cervical cancer develops in anyone who has a cervix.

In addition to this, screening might not be relevant for all women such as those who have had a full hysterectomy. We phrased our information on cervical screening to reflect this. Some women identify as men but still have a cervix, so we wanted to make it clear that they would still need to be aware of the screening programme.

We do always welcome feedback and so I do thank you for getting in touch. We definitely want to ensure that our messaging is as accessible as possible for lots of different audiences and do not want to discourage anyone who has cervix from the screening programme. We will make sure that’s considered for future communications.

Based on this I have now decided to withdraw my donation from CRUK and support a charity that focuses specifically on female gynae cancers instead.

Wakame I think you're splitting hairs here.

Wakame · 24/06/2018 15:56

"Are post menopausal women not women?"

That is a question typically asked of GC feminists who insist that being a woman is all about being able to get pregnant. Quite funny to be asked it as a trans woman! As a trans woman, I don't think that being a woman is contingent on being able to get pregnant, so post menopausal women are women as far as I'm concerned.

placemats · 24/06/2018 15:57

As far as I know, she identifies as female and that makes her female as far as I am concerned.

How patronising.

Wakame · 24/06/2018 15:59

"many transwomen will be perfectly fertile."

This is really not complicated - a trans woman who is fertile is a fertile woman, and a trans woman who is infertile is an infertile woman.

Wakame · 24/06/2018 16:01

"How patronising."

Interesting choice of word. How is it patronising to accept someone's core identity as real? If it is patronising, then please feel free to patronise me and recognise me as female ;-)

AssassinatedBeauty · 24/06/2018 16:01

Are there other cancer charities that can bring themselves to refer to women, and that raise funds to research into women's cancers? Does anyone have any recommendations for who to support?

LangCleg · 24/06/2018 16:01

It’s distasteful isn’t it?

More red flags than bunting at a royal wedding if you ask me.

SardinesAreYum · 24/06/2018 16:02

"beards are a sex characteristic"

WOAH hold on there.

Sex characteristic of who?

Surely not MALE as linking beards with men is as grotesue as linking cervixes with women.

Mossandclover · 24/06/2018 16:02

What this all comes down to is these trans activists would rather see women die from cervical cancer than have campaign materials focus on women. It is not just women’s sports, political posts, jobs, refuges, safety, privacy and dignity that they wish to push aside for their ideology - they are also happy for women to die.

The Eve Appeal;

AssassinatedBeauty · 24/06/2018 16:04

Thanks UpstartCrow, I'll have a look at them.

placemats · 24/06/2018 16:05

This is really not complicated - a trans woman who is fertile is a fertile woman, and a trans woman who is infertile is an infertile woman

Can you explain to me how a trans woman is fertile or infertile? Has it something to do with biology or is it an innate sense of gender?

placemats · 24/06/2018 16:07

What is core identity?

Is this something that is special to those who trans?

I'm curious to know because I know I don't have a core identity. Which makes me not trans. I think?

UpstartCrow · 24/06/2018 16:08

The Eve Appeal are specifically for gynecological cancers.

''Every day in the UK, 58 women are diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer and 21 will die. Yet despite these grim statistics, gynaecological cancers are neither a well-profiled nor a well-funded cause.
The Eve Appeal is determined to change this for the future of women everywhere.''

"GC feminists who insist that being a woman is all about being able to get pregnant"

Grotesque lie about feminists, of any type really.

SardinesAreYum · 24/06/2018 16:10

"I'm curious to know because I know I don't have a core identity. Which makes me not trans. I think?"

This is defined in genderspeak as "agender" and indeed does put you under the "trans umbrella".

Although if self idenitity is all there is, surely anyone can ID as trans.

This

This is the mentality we are dealing with.

UpstartCrow · 24/06/2018 16:12

Its clear that we have to focus on education campaigns about women's health, pregnancy and STD's for the foreseeable future.

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 24/06/2018 16:14

As far as I know, she identifies as female and that makes her female as far as I am concerned..

That’s not what makes her female as far as most feminists (and the majority of the world) are concerned.

Wakame · 24/06/2018 16:24

"What this all comes down to is these trans activists would rather see women die from cervical cancer than have campaign materials focus on women."

Yes, by expanding to include everyone with a cervix, we are trying to limit the number of people receiving treatment Hmm

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 24/06/2018 16:25

I find the word ‘women’ quite useful for including all those with a cervix.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 24/06/2018 16:27

Well as someone who has a parent who’s first language isn’t English I can say that they wouldn’t understand that a poster/letter that doesn’t state ‘Man’ but instead uses vague terminology to describe someone’s sex coupled with medical terminology just wouldn’t get that it was for his attention. And his level of English is very good but obviously medical terminology beyond basics like lung, heart etc would be beyond him.

This is so dangerous, this isn’t fit for purpose.

How somebody identifies has sweet fuck all to do with what cancers they might or might not get. That's to do with what sex the person is. HTH.

Wakame · 24/06/2018 16:28

"What is core identity? Is this something that is special to those who trans?"

It's a term from psychology. Think of it as "who" you are, and gender identity is part of that.
