Many feminists support sex work ? Me being one of them . I wrote my thesis on feminist approaches to prostitution ... so am well qualified to discuss

Iseveryusernamealreadytaken · 23/06/2018 11:01

I'm just thinking about all the royalty and politicians who go round visiting factories, engineering companies, building sites etc and 'have a go' at the job on their visit e.g. are shown how to make one of the products for themselves or lay a foundation stone etc.

If they think prostitution is just another job - and want to highlight the 'good work' of the pimps and brothel owners - why don't they do a visit to a brothel and have a go at the job themselves by servicing a punter?

If it's outrageous to suggest that our royal and political elite should do this, then it's not just another job, is it?

This ^^

We need more laws to stop criminalusing women and recognition through gongs is a positive step.

At the same time, we need to strengthen the right to say no. I am concerned that under Universal Credit rules a Job Centre could pressure a woman to take sex work. That would be abhorrent and I would like to see more safeguards.

vaginafetishist · 23/06/2018 11:11

Would you want your daughter to do it?

Terfulike · 23/06/2018 11:12

I mean I love the last post by op

Go on Cats then - discuss.
How exactly does this differ from having a "job" that involves licking someone's boots. Would that be a good job also?

Are you or have you ever been a prostitute?

If you have a daughter will you suggest she pursues a career in academia or whoring?

And yes that choice of word was deliberately offensive. Advocating pimping is pretty offensive too.

Currently out but I can try and find the bibliography of sources to read on this

LemonJello · 23/06/2018 11:29

moral judgements

Fgs. No one is judging the women.

I am judging the monarchy for endorsing the exploitation of women. And I judge academics who also do this. Hmm

Catsandkids78 · 23/06/2018 11:29

By saying “would you want your daughter to do it” shows a little moral contempt no?

LassWiADelicateAir · 23/06/2018 11:30

The moral judgements are on the pimps, brothel keepers, madams and punters, not the women , or men, for that matter, selling sex.

Where has anyone here said anything about further criminalising prostitutes?

So you have no thoughts on whether being a prostitute is a good career move for your (theoretical or otherwise) daughter.

LassWiADelicateAir · 23/06/2018 11:33

By saying “would you want your daughter to do it” shows a little moral contempt no?

I'm going to risk a deletion here but for someone who apparently has written a these you are coming across as a bit thick.

Oh and morality encompasses far more than the narrow concept of who adults have sex with.

LemonJello · 23/06/2018 11:33

By saying “would you want your daughter to do it” shows a little moral contempt no?

No.

It is an attempt to humanise something which is inherently dehumanising.

LassWiADelicateAir · 23/06/2018 11:34

a thesis obviously (damn you autocorrect)

Catsandkids78 · 23/06/2018 11:35

If my Daughter decided that was what she wanted to do - and wasn’t forced into it by a pimp / partner and it was fully self motivated it isn’t my choice to make for her

LemonJello · 23/06/2018 11:37

Also I have worked in areas of sex work - not prostitution but comes underneath the remit of sex work whilst a student . Free choice , enjoyed it

Good for you.

I don’t want to live in a world where the exploitation of women is tolerated, let alone endorsed by the queen, thanks.

ReluctantCamper · 23/06/2018 11:37

Yep, I don't judge the women, I judge the punters who think money buys consent.

LemonJello · 23/06/2018 11:39

If my Daughter decided that was what she wanted to do - and wasn’t forced into it by a pimp / partner and it was fully self motivated it isn’t my choice to make for her

No one suggested it would be your choice HmmConfused

Thy asked if you would want your daughter to do it.

LassWiADelicateAir · 23/06/2018 11:40

Also I have worked in areas of sex work - not prostitution but comes underneath the remit of sex work whilst a student . Free choice , enjoyed it

So you haven't actually experienced having a bloke you wouldn't otherwise touch with a barge pole pay twenty or thirty quid to wank into one or more of your orifices?

Catsandkids78 · 23/06/2018 11:40

Money doesn’t buy consent ? You seem very misguided

53rdWay · 23/06/2018 11:42

Maybe you should read in to the full debate around sex work and feminism rather than trying to condemn.

I have, thanks. I find it typically an unconvincing “choice feminism” gloss over inherently oppressive systems and inability to apply class analysis to them. Occasionally attempts to engage with the harms of said system and argue that full decriminalisation is necessary on harm reduction grounds, which is more compelling, but not borne out by the data.

If you think the feminist abolitionist position is about condemning and criminalising the women, perhaps you should read a bit more around that? Because it’s not, and you’re missing a very fundamental point.
