Lisa Muggeridge Suspended by Twitter and Quoting her breaches MN Guidelines

I posted news that another woman has been suspended by Twitter. This seems likely as a result of targetted mass reports

Lisa Muggeridge comments at idgeofreason.wordpress.com

& recently spoke at the Inconvenient Women: We Need to Talk meeting in London.

I posted the quote by Lisa because it concerns me that women are being silenced.

My background is English Literature so my style is to leave a writer's words for others to read for themselves.

There were a number of apparent attempts to derail the thread and so when this happened, I quoted further comment by Lisa Muggeridge. To let her words speak.

I believe in the importance of free speech.

I have many books on my bookshelf, which I am sure may have contentious comments in. I don't though believe that books are dangerous or should be burned.

I also read authors who had serious failings.

I wasn't advised that there was an issue with the OP but understand that within the quoted comment was misgendering.

I felt that it was not for me to edit Lisa Muggeridge's words.

This is the petition to government:
petition.parliament.uk/petitions/214118

If it reaches 100 000 there may be a debate in parliament

It currently stands at 12 248

Which meant the Govt reponded here

Consult with women on proposals to enshrine 'gender identity' in law
The government proposes to amend the law to allow people to self-identify as men or women, and to stop allowing organisations in sensitive situations to exclude people of the opposite birth sex. We call for women to be consulted on how to protect women and girls' rights, safety, privacy and dignity.

More details
We call for:

  • Respectful and evidence-based discussion about the impact of proposed changes and for women's voices to be heard.

  • The government to consult with women’s organisations on how self-declaration would impact on women-only services and spaces, data-gathering, and monitoring of sex-based discrimination.

  • The principle of single-sex spaces to be upheld – and where necessary extended.

I hope more people will see the importance of signing & sharing this

This thread is wonderful.

Whoever would have guessed that deleting an entire thread to make women's contributions vanish could backfire so spectacularly?

Kudos to everyone involved. All the concerned and articulate women who took the time to write.

Special appreciation for those who couldn't resist the temptation to wave their red flags, repeatedly and so insistently - thank you for stating your case so clearly. It helps.

Yes, this thread is great, special thanks to R0wantrees . It is making me feel a bit better about the censorship deleted thread

Grizzlygrox Thu 21-Jun-18 11:44:22 Thread begins like this. “Roz this is a written notice to you. We are putting trans rights activism on notice in the UK. Its done.” It’s insufferably arrogant but also, replace ‘trans’ with ‘lesbian or gay’.

I is impossible to engage in rational conversation with a person who does not acknowledge a difference between members of a lobbyist group and the segment of the population they claim to represent.

thebewilderness · 21/06/2018 21:24

I have been trying to catch up with this and other threads and want to say that it is brilliant.
I was too busy reporting violations of the new sweeping generalizations rule and the MRA troll to be able to get another strike by expressing an opinion.

LangCleg · 21/06/2018 22:28

R0wantrees not only have you put a labour of love into this thread but I also think you have hit upon the perfect method of politely repelling merailing and faux concerns. All kudos to you.

R0wantrees · 21/06/2018 22:41

LangCleg
It has been the perfect antidote to feeling disempowered and frustrated (as I did earlier this week)

the words are so inspiring, its been a wonderful afternoon!

It all really just evolved... I do read what I c&p as well as other people's posts.

Not sure if Lisa Muggeridge is still about, but I would like to thank her for her words and clarity of thought, as well as all the other wonderful women on this thread. Flowers

Speak, women, speak into the darkness. Your voices will echo and rebound again and again, because, as any fool knows, you say it on the internet, it never really dies.

Thanks for this magnificent thread and for reminding me once more that women's wisdom will just not buggering lie down and die.

R0wan

Can I add my thanks for all you've been putting in to this and other threads. It really is appreciated.

Oh - and I've forgiven you for declining to take on the role I tried to give you as tactician for Team Sportacus on the spurious grounds that you "hate football". Grin

That's the spirit, my lovely, that's the spirit!

R0wantrees · 21/06/2018 23:00

I don't know where to put this.

I've thought twice about posting.

But I would like to check in with fellow posters.

There is a powerful blog post recently added to this board.

I've never seen blog posts posted by MN within this FWR board.

It addresses the sliencing of women - but in a different culture from the UK.

My inquisitiveness about why life as a girl had to be different started at a young age. Like children everywhere, growing up was riddled with small acts of defiance - with one small difference. Without knowing it, I was challenging the notions of what it meant to be a girl in the Islamic Republic. This brought shame to my family time and again - when I was expelled from high school for asking questions about the political system, for instance, and when I complained about the compulsory hijab.

I've read it through.

I think it's a really powerful blog.

I think it's a really powerful message. Not in my local world, but powerful globally that I would support. She also says:

I believe that it is only by saying ‘no’ that we forge our identity.

Given the context of where we are right now in the debate here, in the UK, about women's rights. Of all the numerous threads here, on Mumsnet, where many UK women are saying 'no'. NO. 'where we forge our identity'.

Is MNHQ trolling us, or subversively supporting the argument?

If it's the former, I am being gaslighted the fuck out of, and I am out of here.

LightofaSilveryMoon · 21/06/2018 23:19

R0wantrees: many, many thanks! I've so enjoyed your posts - inspirational! -and your knowledge and understanding.

pombear · 21/06/2018 23:22

Sorry, didn't make my post previously clear - I've posted it in this thread as it feels linked to the silencing of people.

Of the themes of saying 'no' as females and the penalties in so many ways/cultures/spaces that has.

R0wantrees · 21/06/2018 23:35

I thought the post was inspiring PomBear , deeds & words!

Masih Alinejad

"I believe that it is only by saying ‘no’ that we forge our identity.

The will to fight against injustice has guided me ever since. For more than four years now, I have campaigned against the compulsory hijab - a venture which started spontaneously on a beautiful May day, when the rain stopped and the sun came out...

At the heart of my activism is the need to give voice to the millions of silenced women in Iran - women who are continually ignored by the government. I attribute the success of my campaigns to the fact that they are utterly based on the actions of ordinary people. My role has been to give them a platform from which to relay their voices - so that they, too, can speak their forbidden words. "

pombear you are emphatically not the only one to have noticed! I posted a question on that thread and thought long and hard about how to frame it in a neutral manner, because my snark-queen head really wanted to say "What do you think about women in the UK being told they are not allowed to say no in certain circumstances anymore?"

pombear · 21/06/2018 23:38

True ROwan, deeds and words. Thanks for refocusing and reminding of the links.

And yes Floral a question to the UK.

"to point you all in the direction of the Netflix release of Hannah Gadsby's Nanette - a stand up recorded at the Sidney Opera House. I just watched and she's brilliant. Fiercely feminist, funny, passionate, angry, emotional, and so so smart. I hadn't heard of her before but enjoyed it so much I had to share"

Haveht got time to rtft at mo being harrassed by a grumpy toddler but i will do. Lisa muggeridge and rowan Flowers keep doing what you are doing - it helps less brave women like me quietly talk about gender identity politics and wake up other women who may not be mumsnet / twitter followers to what is going on without coming across as a transphobe

R0wantrees · 22/06/2018 08:03

By way of context,
there is now a directly targetted 'imitation' Lisa Muggeridge Twitter account

twitter.com/lisamuggeridge6

thread:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3285263-Fake-Lisa-Muggeridge-account

As it is aware, it will likely be taken down soon.

Interesting though to see which active TRA Twitter accounts are following it.

(whilst of course recognising that following an account does not endorse the views or actions etc)
