Hostelling Scotland allows men to self ID as women and have access to women's dorms and shower rooms

ManFriday have a piece up about Hostelling Scotland allowing men to have full access to women's dorms and showering facilities - also without informing women that this is the case - so long as these men say they are women when they check in, effectively giving predatory men easy access to women where we are most vulnerable. Which is not only putting women in danger, but also now many women are going to have to self exclude, and since this is budget accommodation it will most likely disproportionately affect poorer women as well....manfridayuk.org/2018/06/15/a-scottish-hostelling-experience/

How many men are now in prison due to women telling lies.

Very few, considering how few convictions there are overall for sexual and domestic violence.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 17/06/2018 20:35

I am so, so grateful to Man Friday for doing this.

When I was in my 20s I was groped at night by a drunk man in the lounge of a North Sea ferry (one of those reclining seat areas). Through my sleeping bag and clothes, so I don't think he could have felt very much(!) but it was bloody horrible and consequently there is no way I would ever use a mixed sex sleeping area or allow my daughter to.

Vicky doing the rounds on a number of threads spouting about how awful women are.

Vicky - do you know what board you are on?

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 17/06/2018 20:39

Vicky, you utter arsehole, how many men AREN'T in prison when women have been telling the truth? Go on...have a guess! I'll give you a clue...start at 100,000 and work upwards!

Oh thats horrible poor you.
I used to go youth hosteling as a teenager with my two friends. We thought we were so grown up and had a great time.My mum would never have let me go if there were boys in the same bedroom. It makes me really cross to think young women will not be able to have the same opportunity now.

Sarahconnor1 · 17/06/2018 20:45

I've just had a look at some of vickys contributions elsewhere. Vicky quite cleary hates women, especially those Vicky deems feminists.

Kettlepotblackagain · 17/06/2018 20:48

Yeah I just did the same Sarah. Vicky has quite the history of making sure everyone knows about 'men's rights' and how unfair life is for men.

Why do so many organisations now all of a sudden think that the 2010 Equality act means Self ID? (Actually I know the answer to that one). And why were they happy to ignore it for so long if they now think it means cocks in women’s dorms?

My family used YHs extensively when I was a kid - my mum and I in ththe female dorms. Not going to be doing that with my kids.

PuellaEstCornelia · 17/06/2018 20:52

TRANSWOMEN!!! Damn you predictive text!!

loveyouradvice · 17/06/2018 20:57

I'm another one whose first solo holiday was youthhostelling - age 17, extremely innocent, bicycling in Wales with a mate.... lots of banter with the lads in the kitchen as we cooked, and glad to escape to the single-sex zone to sleep and RELAX... feeling safe... which we certainly wouldn't have done with some one male-bodied in the next bed.

I am also a woman who was attacked (attempted rape) while in a solo hospital room....

I do NOT trust men however they identify... the only thing that protects me now (ironically) is my age.... but I have a teenage daughter who I would like to be able to go out into the world as confidently as I did, knowing that in the main there are safeguards to protect her as a young woman

2rebecca · 17/06/2018 20:59

I thought you were imaginatively avoiding the thought crime police

Kettlepotblackagain · 17/06/2018 21:01

Transformer GrinGrinGrinGrin I thought you'd put this deliberately and sniggered to myself

Bowlofbabelfish · 17/06/2018 21:03

Also to say that this is NOT any kind of ‘all transwomen are..’ thing. As I’ve pointed out on many other threads, this policy lets MEN in. If every transwoman on the planet is a saint, it doesn’t matter, because the policy lets any man who wants to in.

And as we all know - a proportion of men are a danger to women. And to transwomen too!

Kettlepotblackagain · 17/06/2018 21:04

Exactly!! It looks to me like the Government needs to issue clarification on this matter - it hasn't been approved yet! Why on earth is it being introduced? If anything these places may be breaking the law by misinterpreting the EA Act.

MaverickSnoopy · 17/06/2018 21:05

To the poster who mentioned this being a safeguarding issue for those under 18, I agree. I attended safeguarding training about a month ago and the subject of trans didn't come up at all, but the scenarios that came up make me think that this would be a safeguarding issue. I assume companies would just say "but they identity as...". I have another safeguarding training session in a few weeks and will raise it then.

Me too.
As are thousands of MN users.

Shame on you MNHQ for not sticking up for your core users.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 17/06/2018 21:09

To the poster who mentioned this being a safeguarding issue for those under 18

It was me - and thank you, it would be great if you could come back and let us know the feedback on this from your next safeguarding session.

Ereshkigal · 17/06/2018 21:19

Why on earth is it being introduced?

Because they are targeted by transactivists (Girl Guides, Swim England) and given advice that disregards and disrespects women as a protected sex class.

Ereshkigal · 17/06/2018 21:19

Women and girls

thebewilderness · 17/06/2018 21:23

Check the wording of policies against the actual wording of the Equality Act list of protected characteristics. Turns out many of them have been changed in violation of the act without those who are charged with applying the regulations realizing it.

BetsyM00 · 17/06/2018 21:25

Sorry to hear of some sad experiences. The thing is, in this case it could be so easily solved. Most hostels have a mix of accommodation so just make the shared dorms strictly single-sex (as permitted under the Equality Act). And if you are trans and not comfortable with this, then policy should allow for a single room if booked in advance, at the same price.

Hostels do vary, there are quite a few small ones, so it won't always be possible. But then, not all hostels are suitable for all people anyway. Some are in old buildings so not wheelchair accessible, some are up mountains only reached by a long trek. But there's plenty to choose from, so just find one that suits your needs!

TransplantsArePlants · 17/06/2018 21:25

Thank you ManFriday. Utterly, utterly ridiculous.

And as for that patronising email to Macareux from YHA Scotland...

Kettlepotblackagain · 17/06/2018 21:26

That's what I mean Eresh - these groups are spreading the word that the law has been broken then? I understood this was in the pipeline and that there were proposals for the Guides etc - but are they actually saying you have broken the EA if you do not introduce self ID at the present time? Before it has been approved?

Kettlepotblackagain · 17/06/2018 21:28

I thought that these organisations, such as the youth hostel, were misinterpreting the EA....
