Joe Rogan on trans athletes

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but has anyone seen this video of Joe Rogan and others discussing trans athletes and women's sports? I think it was a good discussion and can't understand how someone could still scream bigotry at these very valid points. Hope the link works

He's got quite a few videos on trans stuff. It's very mansplainy but we need men to discuss it.

Joe Rogan, while some of his views I think veer on the biological determinist side, is always on the money wrt this particular subject.

Bespin · 16/06/2018 08:45

It's unfortunate that he also as quite a few other views on things that you may not agree with but hay if he supports your view it's all good I suppose

Ireneony · 16/06/2018 08:46

Yes I'm just discovering him, seems very reasonable.

OP posts:
Ireneony · 16/06/2018 08:52

Care to elaborate? Quick browse shoes he is critical of organised religion, thinks we should move away from factory farming and kill what we eat ourselves, is for the decriminalisation of cannabis, anti infant circumcision.. what else am I missing? Seems reasonable so far but I doubt there are many people out there I'm going to agree with 100% Did you watch the video? It's a discussion on trans people in sports that raises very good points

Ireneony · 16/06/2018 08:53

Ha shows not shoes! Pre coffee !

OP posts:
Juells · 16/06/2018 08:57

Great discussion

Juells · 16/06/2018 08:58

I didn't find it mansplainy. He's trying to show the bullshit.

Ireneony · 16/06/2018 09:15

I can't see how anyone could not agree with the points raised to be honest. Maybe mansplainy was the wrong word. I think it's just frustrating seeing men say, as if they've just thought of it, what we've been saying for ages. But regardless, it's good to see men 'getting it'

OP posts:
Juells · 16/06/2018 09:21

It's such ridiculous nonsense that I don't understand how it ever got to this stage, where huge hulks (as happened in commonwealth games) can compete against diminutive women. With a big fucking smug smirk on their face, as if they'd won through talent.

Polynerd · 16/06/2018 09:40

Which one is Joe Rogan? And who is the British bloke?

MyAuntyBadger · 16/06/2018 09:41

Not clicking the reddit link because (like I tell the work gossip) I have my own mind and like to form my own opinions on people, but he completely makes sense in the op's link.

Ireneony · 16/06/2018 09:44

bespin I don't really have time to read reddit gossip but will have a look later. Regardless of potential negative aspects of Joe Rogan's character, did you watch the discussion and if so what aspects do you/don't you agree with?

I'm not here to idolise any particular person just to take part in an important debate around women's sports. I think the points raised in the video are fair. What do you think?

Juells I agree with you and despair for what will happen to women's sports if this is allowed to continue. This conversation is important.

I think that’s a pretty fair assessment of the issue. I’ve no idea who he is or what other views he holds, but I don’t subscribe to the idea that disagreeing with someone about some of their views necessarily negates everything they say.

Freespeecher · 16/06/2018 10:56

He obviously knows his MMA. On a phone so can't watch right now - is the one where he points out how weird it is that, when he raises his concerns about women getting the sh!t beaten out of them by fighters who were born male, he gets hold Hey! You're out of line!

I quite like Rogan - unlike many of the other talking heads he's not an academic or a writer (not that these are bad things of course), just an honest everyman trying to have a conversation.

ChickenMe · 16/06/2018 11:13

I don't get this new fangled idea that you have to agree with everything a person has ever said EVER to agree with one thing they have said.

I don't agree with everything my Dad says, should I disown him?

fmsfms · 16/06/2018 11:23

@Ireneony "It's very mansplainy but we need men to discuss it."

How is a conversation between a group of 3 men - on a podcast no less where two of the men are invited for the SOLE purpose of discussing ideas and sharing their opinions, "mansplainy"?

Mansplaining is meant to mean "(of a man) explain (something) to someone, typically a woman, in a manner regarded as condescending or patronizing."

But people are now throwing it around any time a man dares to express his opinion, on his own blimming podcast!

Noqont · 16/06/2018 11:43

I don't get this new fangled idea that you have to agree with everything a person has ever said EVER to agree with one thing they have said.

No I don't get this either. Why on earth should it matter.

Ireneony · 16/06/2018 11:45

Joe Rogan is the baldish American one. He is the UFC's top commentator on MMA.

The other people are Sam Harris, a philosopher and neuroscientist. The British man is an LBC presenter who's name escapes me just now.

Bespin can't or won't discuss the points being discussed in the video and so is instead attempting a character assassination to devalue Rogan's point of view. I just want to talk about people born male competing against females in sport and how that isn't fair. Don't really care about Rogan as a person.

Yes fms I said that probably wasn't the right word, I'm merely expressing how it seems to take men to explain the situation for other men to take it seriously - someone I know has been debating me in real life regarding this but has watched this video and a few others and now suddenly gets it. I appreciate that I used the term incorrectly.

Finally found out. He is Maajid Nawaz, founder of Quilliam. I though he sounded like he has a really solid grasp of the issue. And - get this! - he's a Lib Dem!!! Grin Grin

Ireneony · 16/06/2018 11:48

Thanks polynerd sorry for delay in response! Interesting that he's a lib Dem considering their unquestioning stance on self ID

OP posts:
Polynerd · 16/06/2018 11:50

Well clearly he's the person to change their view from the inside!

Ireneony · 16/06/2018 12:03

I hope so!

I'll just wait here for someone to come and tell me why it's completely fine for people born male to compete with females in physical sports. Genuinely interested as to how they reconcile this in their minds.

OP posts:
Ireneony · 16/06/2018 12:38

Having checked out a bit more about Rogan, I see he's not a particularly great comedian and a bit of a meathead that says some stupid shit sometimes. Regardless I think the discussion is still a good one and he comes across well in it.
