Clare, the tweeter said it was in retaliation for the ManFriday Ladies at Hampstead pool.

UpstartCrow · 16/06/2018 21:11

The avatar of the offending account is just a photo taken from the internet, according to TinEye. Its not a photo of the person who runs the account.

R0wantrees · 16/06/2018 21:11

I really thought the internet was going to change everything by opening conversations to many new arguments from marginalised voices.

It's gone completely the other way

JoanSummers There is an excellent tedtalk by Jon Ronson describing & discussing this:
'How one tweet can ruin your life'

(thanks to DJLippy for sharing this on a thread a couple of weeks ago, I especially agree with his concluding comment and 'favour people over ideologies')

vickyjgo · 16/06/2018 21:14

It doesn't look like this guy is connected in anyway to the trans community so looks like a loony looking to get attention - some guy who just hates women.

yetanothertranswoman · 16/06/2018 21:14

the tweeter said it was in retaliation for the ManFriday Ladies at Hampstead pool

There are people who will attach themselves to any cause if it means silencing women.

They could well be a trans activist determined to silence women and who passionately believes in trans rights.

Or they could well be another angry man determined to silence women in any way they can because they hate women and have attached themselves to this cause but they no more care about trans rights than people like Tommy Robinson cares about women's rights.

Kettlepotblackagain · 16/06/2018 21:22

This is really, really frustrating.

It's not about the trans community trying to take responsibility for some arsehole.

My hunch is that is just some sad, lone wolf fucker.

But that's not the point.

Why can't they look at their movement and see what we are saying. This is more proof. Look at what men will do to women if anyone gives them an inch! This is the very point at the heart of our criticism of them. They don't understand women's rights and the misogynistic nature of the society we live in. They don't recognise it, they haven't experienced it!

They won't look at it even when threats of violence are made!!! Can't they see they have opened up another channel, yet another way in! They're not understanding that they their movement works within the very power structure we are fighting against and they are doing sod all to do what they can to work with us.

R0wantrees · 16/06/2018 21:22

There have been considerable calls for 'allies':

discussed on this thread:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3228481-Cis-allies-being-asked-to-provide-protection

also conclusion of recent Independent article:

How the Far Right is attacking the lives of the Transgender Community & What we can do about it

"For Jake, one of the most important thing is that the cisgender community can do to support transgender rights is to get on board and support the transgender cause. Speaking to indy100, he said:

Now more than ever, allies' support is vital as there are too few of us to always make our voices heard"

SophoclesTheFox · 16/06/2018 21:22

I think that's a very likely explanation, yetanother.

But for me the question is: what is it about the trans issue that attracts these misogynists?

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/06/2018 21:22

I think there are a lot who will fall into your second category Yet.

I do think most genuine (can I say that?) transpeople just want to get on with their lives like anybody else.

thebewilderness · 16/06/2018 21:41

Claire is on of the trans that the transgender advocates on FWR claim do not exist.
I glance at Claire's blog would disabuse them of their false notions.
The most recent appears to be a hatred filled screed against WPUK.
Fancy that. clareflourish.wordpress /2018/04/30/womans-place-uk-transphobic/

yetanothertranswoman · 16/06/2018 21:41

But for me the question is: what is it about the trans issue that attracts these misogynists

Because women are speaking up and defending their rights and mysoginists don't like that and will do anything they can to try and silence women?

Baroquehavoc · 16/06/2018 21:44

So a random mysoginists can see how trans issues can be used to silence women?

thebewilderness · 16/06/2018 21:44

They could well be a trans activist determined to silence women and who passionately believes in trans rights. Or they could well be another angry man determined to silence women in any way they can because they hate women...

I confess I see no significant difference among the various reasons used to justify male violence against women.

SophoclesTheFox · 16/06/2018 21:46

That's certainly true, yetanother

For me it does seem to go a little further than that: many transactivists are quite at home with misogyny.

And there is often apathy and indifference - as demonstrated by Clare on this thread - to the reality of what this means for women.

Sarahconnor1 · 16/06/2018 21:49

yetanothertranswoman · 16/06/2018 21:50

There are probably people who attach themselves to any cause who don't care about the cause but use it as a vehicle to attack other people. I am sure there are people who have attached themselves to the trans cause who don't care about trans people but use it as way of attacking women. There may be people who have attached themselves to women's rights who don't care about women's rights but use it as means to attack trans people.

Violence and threats of violence can never be justified but are getting all too common and are easy to make in today's world.

Kettlepotblackagain · 16/06/2018 21:50

Interesting blog Clare.

You certainly know your stuff about Women's Place.

So you have come here to educate all us ignorant, hysterical women eh?

ClareFlourish · 16/06/2018 21:56

Well, that AWP video contains misinformation about self-ID, and an attempt to instill fear against trans people. "Debate" should not include falsehoods, thebew.

What's FWR?

Sarahconnor1 · 16/06/2018 22:01

Debate should not include falsehood. Indeed, yet the first few lines of your blog and I am quoting here

Woman’s Place UK is a transphobic organisation, hosting public meetings where transphobic speakers are cheered on by transphobes

R0wantrees · 16/06/2018 22:05

Isn't Clare allowed to call WPUK transphobic if she wants - seeing as she is trans?

You may not agree with her - but she is trans and is allowed to call people transphobic.

R0wantrees · 16/06/2018 22:08

Womans Place UK

"This is a campaign formed specifically to ensure women’s voices are heard in the debate around proposals to change the Gender Recognition Act (2004).

We have 5 fair and reasonable demands to ensure that this happens.

  1. Respectful and evidence-based discussion about the impact of the proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act to be allowed to take place and for women’s voices to be heard.

  2. The principle of women-only spaces to be upheld – and where necessary extended.

  3. A review of how the exemptions in the Equality Act which allow or single sex services or requirements that only a woman can apply for a job (such as in a domestic violence refuge) are being applied in practice.

  4. Government to consult with women’s organisations on how self-declaration would impact on women-only services and spaces.

  5. Government to consult on how self-declaration will impact upon data gathering – such as crime, employment, pay and health statistics – and monitoring of sex-based discrimination such as the gender pay gap."

womansplaceuk.org/our-demands-2/

Kettlepotblackagain · 16/06/2018 22:10

More falsehood:

mocks trans women with the purpose of dehumanising us and fomenting hatred.

Should debate be debate or are you going to call someone a transphobic every time they make a point you don't like? I counted the word transphobe/ic 5 times in that article. I particularly liked the phrase that we are 'stoked with transphobia'.

Your premise starts with the assumption that we are all transphobic. Is that's not a falsehood what is? And how on earth can you have a balanced and rational debate with that mindset? Or do you get to set the narrative?

ClareFlourish · 16/06/2018 22:12

Indeed, and yet the video I quoted was on the AWP Youtube. I link to it in my blog post. The speaker says what I have quoted. It is inaccurate and fearmongering.

My latest post is on Rodin at the British Museum.

thebewilderness · 16/06/2018 22:13

Excellent catch thebewilderness.
Not me, Sprouts gave me the heads up.
