Liberal Democrats: ‘why are transphobes protesting? Because they are thick’

In case anyone was hoping that the LibDems might offer some political sanity in turbulent times, don’t bother.

Their LGBT thread on why ‘transphobes’ - women with concerns - are ‘a bit thick’: Thread Here

We could do with a sensible third party in British politics. Too bad the Lib Dems keep ruling themselves out.

Well, can you argue with biology, Daimbars?

I mean, I've had words with mine, but it seems to ignore me.

Gretol · 07/06/2018 09:57

There's absolutely nothing wrong with being a 'bit thick' as they so delightfully put it

I think they may find the general public to be a 'bit thick' in this area as most people absolutely do not think of transwomen as women and transmen as men.

That's the problem with living in a social media bubble.

Bowlofbabelfish · 07/06/2018 09:59

The current law legally recognises trans women as women bar a few exemptions in the Equality Act.

The law allows them to be treated as that sex. It does not say that they ARE that sex.

Or do you think humans can change sex?

Gretol · 07/06/2018 10:00

"The current law legally recognises trans women as women bar a few exemptions in the Equality Act.

The law allows them to be treated as that sex. It does not say that they ARE that sex."

Yes, the law allows them the courtesy of being treated as though they were women. It nowhere says that people, including policy makers, have to believe that they have changed their biological sex.

LangCleg · 07/06/2018 10:11

Well, nothing short of the liberation of women from the oppressive gender hierarchy itself is going to satisfy me, but I acknowledge we’re not going to achieve that through legislation.

Quite. It's the harmful gender identity ideology I oppose. Legislation is a symptom of that ideology. Why wouldn't I be against all the other symptoms? It would be thick of me if I wasn't.

And it's not about gender non-conformity at all - gender non-conformity is a good thing in GC feminist circles. What is not a good thing is reifying gender.

But of course, if your movement is 99% narcissism, you think any ideological difference is a personal attack on you. That's narcissistic injury for you. Blinds you to the (not) thick logical thought processes other people are having.

hackmum · 07/06/2018 10:21

Here's James Kirkup explaining the Equality Act exemptions:

Of course, James is well-known for being a bit thick, so he probably hasn't understood it correctly, poor dear.

Freespeecher · 07/06/2018 10:21

Ah, the Lib Dems! They sure know how to win votes don't they? And this follows on from their 75 year old leader having a pop at older voters iirc, so it's not just limited to a rogue social media account.

A few people have referenced 'the bubble' so I thought I'd post a link to the SNL sketch of the same name for your delectation:

FermatsTheorem · 07/06/2018 10:27

Thank you! I remember watching that when it first came out, but it's such a treat to re-watch.

Freespeecher · 07/06/2018 10:37

My pleasure, but it's bittersweet - I've voted for the Lib Dems more than any other party but Brexit (though I understand their stance) and their trans position mean I can't see myself voting for them for the foreseeable future, leaving the Tories as the only remotely pragmatic party on the GC issue (and, notwithstanding the best efforts of the likes of David Davies, it's not a given that common sense will win the day).

Sad times.

Terfulike · 07/06/2018 11:00

I just read that Lib Dem thread. The Lib Dems really seem the worst on all this.

But then there was that Caroline Lucas statement yesterday with her TWAW claims. How can an educated woman like her spout this bullshit?

Also, how can it not be thick to state that TWAW in the first place. That's what I call truly thick, and with so many MPs now saying it I'm almost inclined to throw the towel in and take the kids to live in a remote Scottish Island. Oh hang on, the laws in Scotland are even more "progressive" aren't they.

Little OJ should probably team up with the Lib Dems. They seem on the same wavelength.

NoSuchThingAsAlpha · 07/06/2018 11:05

Ah, I remember the days when the Lib Dems were a) relevant and b) centre-left. Now they're just a marginalised party for right-wing libertarians who want to think they're right-on.

Picassospaintbrush · 07/06/2018 11:06

Joan, please, that was revolting..

SameTerfDifferentUserName · 07/06/2018 11:07

There should be some kind of national service for politicians. You’re not allowed in a position of power until you’ve spent 6 months working the checkout at Tesco, delivering personal care in a home, or digging roads.*

Genius idea. This board should be running the country.

Terfulike · 07/06/2018 11:10

Barack and others have carefully gone through the petition response and concluded that we've basically got no rights left. The Lib Dems agree: we've got no rights left and haven't had for years. They think we're a bunch of thickoes for not having noticed.

What's left to do but mass protests and civil disobedience. It makes me respect those Greenham Common women that's for sure. I know it's only half the human race which is being threatened with erasure, not the entire population of the planet. I know it's only a metaphorical erasure, not a physical anhilation but still...

Waddlelikeapenguin · 07/06/2018 11:11

The ostensible point of self ID was to remove the bureaucracy and admin from the GRC process.

FTFY daimbars.

R0wantrees · 07/06/2018 11:16

Brian Cox recently proposed the idea that politicians should complete a basic course in human knowledge:

I would also like to add with regards this twitter account, NALDALT.

Its a cross party issue.

BarrackerBarmer · 07/06/2018 11:17

They are free to think I'm thick.

I'm not the one who can't define woman.

R0wantrees · 07/06/2018 11:20

Also re those who may be tweeting from the LGBT+ LibDem account:
relevent thread:

noeffingidea · 07/06/2018 11:27

Insulting potential voters by calling them thick - straight from the Hilary Clinton book of 'how to lose an election'.

noeffingidea · 07/06/2018 11:29

I've just checked out that account. They have a massive 5.7k followers. Doesn't that tell them something?

R0wantrees · 07/06/2018 11:34

I wonder what proportion of the followers are LibDems and what proportion are TRA...

My impression, increasingly, is that there are a number of people with considerable political influence who seem more active in advancing trans rights ideology than the wider principles of the political parties that they represent.

KittyKlaws · 07/06/2018 11:38

There should be some kind of national service for politicians. You’re not allowed in a position of power until you’ve spent 6 months working the checkout at Tesco, delivering personal care in a home, or digging roads. Or have had a career in whatever your portfolio is.

Now this I would wholeheartedly support
