Dr Adrian Harrop, who the funk does he think he is?

If you're not familiar with this supposed physician (yes, really), then you need to get over to Twitter and see this.

Harrop seems to spend most of his time harassing and insulting natal women whilst unquestionably supporting trans women. He is hiding behind his "medical expertise" and using it to shout women down.

It's both hilarious and terrifying! Shock

I’m amused by his claims of general expertise on so many subjects.

Much like maid above I spent years teaching medical students (biochem/genetics/development/oncology) at universities. Some are wonderful, humane young people who will make a positive difference to the world. Some are not.
Interestingly enough medics tend not to be the truly brilliant students - it’s a subject that suits generalists who have a combination of a fair degree of intelligence with good storage and recall. The really good medics combine that with an innate sense of how people tick and what I suppose translates eventually to ‘bedside manner.’
There were always I’d say 10-15% who you could see the god complex in and those were never the ones you saw intelligence and social ability combined in.

I never particularly enjoyed teaching medics due to that 15%. It always surprises me that medics are seen as the cream of the crop as well - they really aren’t, as a cohort. I suspect this chap would have been one of that insufferable 15%.

Were I on Twitter, I'd like to ask him his views on this ...

This guy is a certified 'nice guy' (aka not actually that nice but insists on telling everyone how great he is).

Those men are some of the worst.

ItrustAdrianlearnshislesson · 11/05/2018 17:39

Hmm, his supervisor needs to have a word with him.

MonsoonMama · 11/05/2018 17:40

I'm not keen on this chap getting the oxygen of oxygen, let alone the oxygen of publicity

I would ordinarily agree but, given that he's an NHS doctor, this is a matter of public interest. We place a lot of trust in our medical professionals, often when we're at our most vulnerable, and I would certainly not want to entrust this man with my personal healthcare, or that of my daughter. I'm horrified by his cavalier public display of misogyny, his complete lack of self-awareness, respect and professionalism, and I think it's wholly appropriate that we talk about this so that women who may be assigned to this medical professional are able to make informed choices.

He is so into women learning their lesson, I actually feel a bit concerned for his husband but maybe he does just reserve it for insubordinate women. I wonder if it was a phrase often repeated to him by his mother...

Someone's getting upset on the good doctor's behalf on twitter.

We're talking about the doctor's own tweets - surely what a doctor tweets - esp about 12 yr old brides - is up for debate on Mumsnet.

They really do think we should only be allowed to discuss prams and nappies, don't they?

Ereshkigal · 11/05/2018 19:08

That person hates MN and is all over the twitter reporting account.

Sadly I am not on twitter, but it would be interesting if someone had posted a similar statement regarding the treatment of transgender individuals within another culture such as this from Indonesia edition.cnn.com/2018/01/29/asia/indonesian-forcibly-shaved-transgender-women-intl/index.htmla transgender person attacked in a developing country with a similar response eg

can we really condem these police as having committed a crime as their culture/society does not recognise the rights of transgender individuals in the same way as we do in the west

I suspect neither Harrop or Jessens cultural relativism would have not survived this scenario and they would quite rightly condemn the situation. Because clearly some things are just wrong, in any context or culture (including, but not limited to FGM, the rape of 12 year old girls and attacks on transgender individuals)

I suspect the reason they would not see both situations as equally unacceptable would be that they obviously care about/can empathise with/see the humanity within one group (transgender identified people) and not the other (young black girls). Just more of the same not seeing women and girls as fully human really.

I think as a doctor you have to be very careful of what you put on social media. The GMC has been quite clear about this, particularly when you make clear that you are a doctor on social media and use that to give your opinions clout.
I'm a GP and although I'm on twitter I mainly support people I agree with. I don't go looking for arguments and deliberately piss people off.
I think he isn't doing himself any favours with the approach he is taking. He seems to have no self awareness and for all his inane witterings about women reflecting on the naughty unsubmissive things they have done doesn't seem to reflect on his own style.
He also spends far more time on twitter than any doc I know and needs to develop his real life.

If anyone is on twitter and would like to complain to GMC about his conduct here is a twitter thread compiling peoples details

I agree with Rowantree's comments and I second JeanHatchet's no-party affiliation. I am in a position to just tell the good doctor and his testicle pal to GTFO.

It sucks for other women though who just want to be seen and heard and have opinions who are targeted by this cockwobbler and doxxed, harassed and then ousted from their party.

IMO, women shouldn't belong to political parties cuz they all suck. policy over party any day.

It's so, so damaging that this is affecting women's political representation.

How many now - from Labour, and now the Greens. And from the Women's Equality Party ffs.

It must be many hundreds now, who have either been suspended, ousted, or just resigned because they cannot abide by the party line.

thebewilderness · 11/05/2018 21:48

Again. The intend is to drive women from the public sphere. The more public the misogynists are about it the sooner the backlash begins. I can only hope it is not too late for the children of this generation.

Interesting. I wonder if that's what precipitated his uncharacteristic apology? Still no apology for telling women they should learn a lesson from death threats though.

ToeToToe · 11/05/2018 21:51

I was talking to a friend the other day - she went to a certain women's college at University - and in her last year (well over 20yrs ago - we're both in our 40's) - the college voted to become mixed sex.

When she returned for a reunion, she was surprised - but not surprised - to read the plaque with the list of names of the presidents.

You guessed it - up till her final year - all women, of course. In the 2 decades since it became mixed sex, about 2 women had been president.

This is why initiatives to bring more women into politics, and single sex spaces, educational programs etc, are so important.

Juells · 11/05/2018 21:55

I couldn't help laughing when I saw a post on that thread from a she/her who refers to terfs as misogynistic bitches 😂

nauticant · 11/05/2018 22:04

These could be the golden years ToeToToe. Let the TRAs have their way and it'll be 50/50 men's and women's names on the plaque with representation of men at 100%.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 11/05/2018 22:07

I'm pleased to see he's had to climb down off his high horse. What a disgrace. Dr Anita Sharma and Nimko Ali showing him up was brilliant.

How dare he. Arrogant git.
