MNHQ Deletion Policy

TheUterati · 30/04/2018 17:03

Earlier today the Trans Park Run thread was deleted in its entirety because SOME posts alleging cheating were deemed to be 'not in the spirit' of MN.

We have a thread about that running.

I have just been deleted on the Heather Peto thread for posting this:

"Bless..."

A post intended to be mildly dismissive.

That was deleted for breaking talk guidelines.

Give me a fucking break MNHQ.

"Bless..." gets a deletion!??!?!

TRA really have got you on a short chain, haven't they?

On the free speech front it is good to see tough new guidance being issued to universities today which may ban students from refusing speakers whose tppics are unpopular. There has been far too much censorship going on.

AnitaLovesVictor · 03/05/2018 09:18

I agree xenia.

KatherinaMinola · 03/05/2018 10:35

I hadn't seen that, Xenia - do you have a link?

KatherinaMinola · 03/05/2018 10:58

It's OK - found it on the BBC Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 03/05/2018 11:14

The times has a piece too 'Crackdown on students silencing free speech'

And the Daily Mail

www.google.co.uk/amp/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5684887/amp/Minister-bans-student-trend-censoring-controversial-speakers.html

It follows a number of high profile cases of attempts by student unions to censor feminists, ...

But Mr Gyimah said a free exchange of ideas must be integral to universities and warned some people were shutting down views to suit 'their own ends'.

'A society in which people feel they have a legitimate right to stop someone expressing their views on campus simply because they are unfashionable or unpopular is rather chilling.

Xenia · 03/05/2018 14:41

It is a very difficult issue to get right. I would like people free to speak about anything - even hold a talk a tuniversity that the holocaust never happened or the royal family are lizards or the bible is literally true or women must in islam obey and submit to their husbands for sex whetehr they like it or not or whatever it might be. The only things I would stop would be when it gets beyond argument to "go forth and murder the royal family" or personal abuse.

The fact someone might get upset because I support the Tories today (vote Conservative today in London and if not that at least do vote).... or think babies are fine if mothers work or whatever is not something that shoud be censored whereas were I to write you are despicable human being because you support Corbyn or you support May that is getting nastier and personal.

it is not homophobic to say your religion says gays burn in hell or racist to say there are more non whites in percentage terms in the legal profession than there are in the general population etc.

Elendon · 03/05/2018 15:50

Re the thread in which I posted a link to the town of Penistone it's now deleted because 'in the current climate the post is inflammatory'

secrethistory89 · 03/05/2018 16:36

Only just joined MN finally after reading it for past few months and it seems like its a contentious time :/

Weezol · 03/05/2018 21:07

Elendon That's inconsistent moderation in action. There are still two posts referencing Peniston visible on that thread, one of which is mine.

PENISonthetable · 03/05/2018 21:20

It was mine. Hangs her lady pen in shame. It is eraser!

We are experiencing another attack by MRAs. Men's Right's Activists.
They consider women's rights to be anti men and appear to be in league with the transgender advocates who consider women's rights to be anti trans.

Hmm... I have a question about accidental misgendering being deleted...

I assume that anyone who accidentally calls Jack Monroe "he" - not knowing that JM has reverted to female pronouns (or at least at the last I knew, this could have since changed) - will be deleted for misgendering? And that it isn't just referring to a male person as "he" that is frowned upon?

Otherwise, y'know, "meet the new boss..."

YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/05/2018 09:08

Hmm... I have a question about accidental misgendering being deleted

Then there are all the ones who use no pronouns or 'made up' pronouns or want to be referred to as they - how are we supposed to keep track, especially since many of the genderqueer non-binary types change according to their preference on the day.

BeyondParody · 04/05/2018 09:15

Good point. Do we know which days pip bunce wants 'he' and which days 'she'?

Is it set by day, or more of a how one feels on waking up kinda thing?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/05/2018 09:23

I'm not just making it up either. Here's a quote from one GQ person

"Personally, I don't identify as a man or a woman. I was assigned female at birth, and I present as different genders depending on the day. I alternate between "non-binary" and "genderqueer' as gender identifiers. According to this Trans, Genderqueer, and Queer Terms Glossary, genderqueer is defined as "an umbrella term for people whose gender identity is outside of, not included within, or beyond the binary of female and male." But everyone's interpretations of their genderqueerness is at least slightly different. Broadening your understanding and definition of gender is helpful in further understanding and respecting the gender I am and how I wish to perceived"

It's from this website

www.bustle.com/articles/124009-7-things-genderqueer-people-want-you-to-know

Of course in real life, we can tell according to which bracelet they are wearing Hmm ... but that does not work here.

Hmm... I have a question about accidental misgendering being deleted...

Ah yes, tricky minefield. Rather deliberately I suspect.

BeyondParody · 04/05/2018 14:49

Out of curiosity, I reported someone "misgendering" a transperson (who is not a TRA and uses their biological pronouns) in a way that did not look intentional, at about 10.30 this morning. I say it didn't look intentional as I can see why someone would assume a transperson uses their gendered pronouns, but surely the point here is about it being an accident.
As I type this, the post is still standing.

Now I'm even more confused Confused

WanderinWomb · 04/05/2018 18:40

Ive been studying the modding of the last 3 days and think the deletions due to misgendering/correctly sexing are related to whether anyone requests deletion and how many Twitter followers the discussed person has.
A graph or diagram could be handy.

Some people have articles in the press using he she they, how can we keep up ? Maybe it needs to be added to the glossary
. A Pronoun du Jour section.

We aren't all mindreaders and if we get it wrong could face a screaming tantrum of the Bristolian kind
"SHE? SHE? ???? MA PRONOUNS ARE THEY! !!!! CUNT! "

BarrackerBarmer · 04/05/2018 19:17

I've noticed mnhq reference words to the effect of ensuring everyone has a voice /not 'shouting down' dissent. This goes back over a year. And I find it confusing and a little troubling.
Because of course, everyone is guaranteed the right to voice their opinion. And the threads are simply consecutive posts. No one's voice is louder than anyone else's.

What it seems to imply, is that in the presence of a majority opinion, the majority may face greater restrictions than the minority.
Which is a dodgy premise.

We already have a hugely biased situation where only one side of the debate is pro silencing/reporting/no debate and hence reports posts that are legal, accurate and without prejudice.

This is already skewing the debate as we are speaking under different rules.

Every poster that claims woman is a feeling is as offensive to me as they think I am when I reference sex. But I am not clicking report for each poster who reduces sex to a stereotype. It feels like I'm turning up to a debate armed with words and reason, but I'm being met with silencing and possible threats of hare crimes.

thebewilderness · 04/05/2018 20:19

I am confused by the fact that accusing a woman, me, of being a man, an MRA, and a TRA, on the Hi i am a man thread is not considered worthy of deletion for misgendering.
It appears that saying a woman is a man is fine it is only saying a male is a man that is a violation of talk guidelines.
I hope they get the mods some training soon cuz they really are being made to look fools.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 04/05/2018 20:19

Every poster that claims woman is a feeling is as offensive to me as they think I am when I reference sex

I utterly agree with you. It negates my experiences of being discriminated against because of my biology and it suggests that being referred to by the wrong pronoun is as debilitating as the kind of discrimination women face because of our biology. It's totally offensive.

SupermatchGame · 04/05/2018 21:16

kind of discrimination women face because of our biology. It's totally offensive.

Trans women face discrimination because of their biology.
If they are seen as a non-trans woman they can experience discrimination when they are treated as a second class citizen by the patriarchy. Women who can't get pregnant can still experience discrimination.
If they don't look acceptable enough as 'women' then they are discriminated against because their biology conflicts with their gender identity as well as society's idea of what a woman should look like.

Ereshkigal · 04/05/2018 21:52

Trans women face discrimination because of their biology.

Only if you think it's a "right" for them to claim womanhood and access all females spaces etc.

They face discrimination because they have a psychological condition. Like others with psychological conditions do. They do not face sex based oppression.

SomeRandomBird · 04/05/2018 22:01

Not RTFT but my account was deleted for a whole week because I said the word 'yuk' (in reference to the public washing of a mooncup. Apparently that was misogynistic).

I emailed mumsnet asking WTF was going on but got no response.

Definitely some trigger happy moderating going on.
