Interestingly, this article says that Exeter are negotiating with Olding but distanced themselves from a deal with Jackson. I wonder why one and not the other?

I think Olding has played his hand very well. While Jackson was running around speaking for himself after court and coming off very blasé, apparently if rumours are to be believed celebrating the verdict, threatening to sue people, and finally an insulting 9 days later issued a carefully worded non-apology...

...Olding stood looking ashamed and sorry while someone made a statement on his behalf. Much easier to look sincere than sound sincere I think. That statement had a much more acceptable tone. He had regrets for what had happened... no one bullied him in to that - he shared those sentiments before the first protest.
Then he shut up. He kept his head down. He waited for the decision from his employer. And when that decision came - even it was excepted with more grace than PJ could muster.

In that sense he looks good by comparison. In some ways I wonder if PJ had behaved in a similar way would the both now be back in their shirts. We’ll never know.

This will follow them. They may get paid to play rugby again elsewhere, they may even have professional success but they will always be the 2 guys who were effectively exiled from Irish rugby due their repugnant behaviour. They will never be celebrated at home again. And every time they walk down an Irish street or into a bar people will look at them for all the wrong reasons. The life they had is gone.

LaurieMarlow · 15/04/2018 12:47

I agree that Jackson's aggressive attitude right after the trial may have made all the difference. If he hadn't been so keen to swing his dick around and threaten litigation (and actually apologised) public opinion/sponsors/other clubs may have looked at it all a little differently.

He only started to sound contrite when it became clear where public opinion stood. Entitled little swine.

NotTakenUsername · 15/04/2018 12:49

I wonder if the two of them remain friends

HRHPrincessMegan · 15/04/2018 12:53

I’m sure this experience has bound them for life but I can’t imagine they’ll ever want to be seen in public together

buckeejit · 15/04/2018 13:31

I think Olding will have been well advised to keep his distance & seek other companions.

Agree that they won't be welcome many places in public & this will follow them. Not enough for any sort of justice for your daughter bumble, and others like her who've been through this.

In my mind the petition for now should be that all sports should have a public statement about codes of conduct & respect for others that is clear cut & that players need to agree to. At least it would stop all this 'only banter' shit about the undisputed messages & at least be one point in their lives where a message is sent to players that they need to think of others & remember they are no better. I know this is only a small thing, but it's something that would be a start.

Good post buckeejit.

Very good article here.

PaulDacreRimsGeese · 15/04/2018 19:23

Completely agree NotTakenUsername.

Olding was very well advised, I'd say. Regardless of whether he was sincere or not, his actions and statement after the trial gave Ulster Rugby a fighting chance of being able to keep him if they wanted to. I reckon he might have had some professional PR advice there.

Whereas Jackson could hardly have played it worse if he'd tried. I know O'Riordain has apologised, but Jackson has still lost. Made himself the laughing stock of an entire country- #suemepaddy was Ireland's top hashtag over the Easter weekend. I too think if he'd done the same as Olding they possibly might have been kept on.

Totallymyownperson · 15/04/2018 20:08

Olding must be privately pissed off with Jackson and his bad PR moves.

NotTakenUsername · 15/04/2018 20:14

That’s why I wondered about the friendship. They seemed to be taking two very different approaches.
PJ throwing money at it, Olding needing legal aid.
PJ being flanked with his family as he arrived each day, Olding turning up on his own.
PJ trying to peacock about like an innocent man, Olding owning his shameful behaviour even in the light of his acquittal.

Sashh- Wise up, those are views reminiscent of the worst of racists.

Very glad the IRFU and Ulster rugby have taken this action. I did suspect there would be a sticking together of the blazers, but pleased with this outcome.

Treaclesoda - whole heartedly agree and then some.

Shock

Really disappointing from HQ. If those comments were made about the identifying features of a West Indian person or a Japanese person they would Be deleted. Yet again comments about Irish people are left to stand. When Willl HQ get it? So sick of the shite directed at Irish people being left to stand on MN.

I didn’t report it initially as I naively relied on the decency of Sash to report her own post. I will now report it and ask HQ to look harder at it. It’s Sunday night though so I expect it will sit there all night!

Bumble-I am sorry you are so upset. I am also a working class prod & though some comments have raised my hackles a bit I genuinely don't think there was any ill intent on anyone's part. I can understand in your situation that it strikes harder & I have no idea how MN make their decisions about whether posts stand or not.

If sashh is around maybe they could request their own post be removed?

Real Irish?

FFS!!!

I presume LongHotSummer is being funny.

NotTakenUsername · 15/04/2018 21:14

eloisesparkle. Thank you for saying that I was really shocked they could write such a thing, we all know there are skeletons in the closets of both religions. Sad

But on reread it could be a poorly communicated joke at the absurdity of an opinion like that.
