Another very disturbing development post trial ...

"Ulster and Ireland rugby player Paddy Jackson has said he intends to sue Labour Senator Aodhán Ó Riordáin for defamation after the politician sent a tweet in the wake of the Belfast rape trial verdicts."

www.irishtimes.com/news/crime-and-law/paddy-jackson-s-lawyers-say-he-intends-to-sue-aodh%C3%A1n-%C3%B3-riord%C3%A1in-over-tweet-1.3445578

You'll easily find a copy of the original tweet that caused offense.... can't believe he'd do that. I'm thinking I should sign up for twitter and post with#suemepaddy

Oh and a footballer is in trouble too

www.joe.ie/news/laois-gaa-disassociate-tweet-gary-walsh-620744

This is a total contrast to the Ched Evans case where clubs seemed to not care.

bkgirl · 01/04/2018 04:39

It's worse than that he is actually threatening to sue everyone who uses the phrase I believe her ! Thing is people are using it like #metoo so we can support anyone wanting to come forward for any abuse. This case has made survivors think there is no point. They have even threatened to use social media searches including peoples google searches. The lawyer who threatened this is a human rights lawyer!!!! I mean, Cambridge Analytica eat your heart out! Look at the headline on the right too about the laughter and jeering. Shocking stuff. Regardless of the result they have got to improve the system in the interest of justice. I cannot understand how they can threaten us that we cannot believe anyone. You can accept the result but still believe her. It's so strange and women in NI feel bullied.

I have tweeted that #ibelieveher #webelieveher is a mumsnet campaign started in 2012. So a bit difficult to sue because who are we believing?

bkgirl · 01/04/2018 06:12

I knew I had seen it ages ago but couldn't find where!!!!!! You total dote xxx

bkgirl · 01/04/2018 06:13

sashh do you know where it was on mumsnet?

bkgirl · 01/04/2018 06:13

TBH I have tweeted loads about it but really, whats he gonna do. I have no £££ only bills.

I've just had to look that up, I see it has a different meaning in Ireland and I chose to think that is the meaning you meant

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 01/04/2018 07:50

I've heard a couple of women try to defend them and that the young woman was lying!Angry Needless to say I went through them for a short cut! One of them is a hideous person anyway and the other utterly clueless. People with any kind of common sense, sensitivity to others and awareness of the disgusting misogynistic society we have to endure all know the truth.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 01/04/2018 07:51

Lol wee dote in Ireland is something you say to someone you are appreciative of!!

RJnomore1 · 01/04/2018 07:57

Quite a good article about the case on the daily record website of all places!

Ifonlyus · 01/04/2018 08:01

Having read the report of the trial posted above I also can't believe the woman's face - I almost wrote defendant because it appeared more like she was on trial - was shown by video to a public gallery as she gave evidence. I Can't belueve the gallery was open to anyone who cared to go in. I can't believe she faced cross examination by 4 different lawyers for 8 days. But I believe her.

Is there a campaign for changes to the legal system?

Velvetbee · 01/04/2018 08:25

I believe her too.

treaclesoda · 01/04/2018 08:31

This is totally de-railing a serious thread but I've googled and can't find anything and I'm really intrigued. @sashh what does 'dote' mean where you are? Something unpleasant presumably? It's such a term of affection here that you can even buy new baby cards that say 'wee dote' on them Smile

And in other more serious news, I believe her.

RJnomore1 · 01/04/2018 08:39

Oh and here's another rape reporter (careful of terminology) being treated like a criminal

www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/rape-cops-treated-like-trash-12284331

sashh · 01/04/2018 08:59

To be very fond of, to dote on a child.

or

feeble minded in old age

Hence me looking for other meanings, I'm going to try to get the Irish meaning in to England, is a grand word.

treaclesoda · 01/04/2018 09:03

Ah, I see Smile.

Actually, now that you mention it, I do remember when I was wee people would have talked about elderly people 'doting' but it's so long since I heard the term that I had forgotten about it.

But yeah, in Ireland, use it as a noun and it's just about the nicest compliment you can give Smile.

Sash - Ched Evans case pubic didn't seem to care either. Wish there were rallies then. Wish there was a #suemeched after he threatened Gloria hunniford with legal action

sashh, the GAA have improved their stance on misogyny in the last while, since a really revolting episode which you can read about by googling Ballyragget.

Maryz · 01/04/2018 12:55

I've just realised that Gary Walsh is the kitchen sink guy. What an arse [sigh]

I honestly think no-one under the age of about 30 should be allowed on Twitter; not until they have passed a "think before you speak" test Hmm

Well this is why the prospect of the civil action is so very thrilling bumble. The absolute fucking moron's attempting to have the case looked at again, but on the balance of probabilities. Absolutely the best thing you can do when you've not been convicted in a somewhat borderline criminal case and left the courtroom looking, at best, like someone who's behaved horribly but who can't be shown to be a rapist beyond reasonable doubt.

I hope O'Riordain doesn't back down. I also hope Jackson is attempting to sue everyone who's used the twitter hashtag and attended rallies.

And his solicitor should be embarrassed at not knowing the difference between not guilty and innocent.
