The Sun transwedding headline

How is it that I find myself agreeing with The Sun?!
Has it really come to this?

People being outraged at the headline with comments like 'why not just say man weds woman' and leave it at that' when obvsly the only reason for the headline & focus on this couple is the trans angle. Cue hurt tweets from happy couple saying 'I've always been a man/woman etc'.

These are two adults who are entitled to live their lives as they choose.

I would never join in any criticising of them for their personal choices which is what this is.
Any concerns I have about the current toxic political climate and silencing of women does not include aiming criticism at people for their personal life choices.

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 27/03/2018 13:06

I think it’s an unkind headline and written for the masses to gawp at and to sell papers.

Trans couple marry would have been nicer.

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 27/03/2018 13:07

It’s a bit Hmm to write this about a couple mixing their own business and just getting on with their lives too. Very othering.

HakunaDentata · 27/03/2018 13:11

Sorry I meant the words in red.
The main headline is clearly offensive but what else did they expect from Sun coverage?

I don't like it. They've made it out to be a freak show, which it isn't. Unkind and unnecessary

Backingvocals · 27/03/2018 13:17

Did they sell their story? The "exclusive" bit makes it look as though they did - perhaps not. If they did then they are pimping out their story and they've had exactly the treatment they were expecting.

HakunaDentata · 27/03/2018 13:23

I didn't post this because I like it (I don't). I don't understand why it would be a freak show to admit to the fact you were born a man or a woman who later transitioned?
Admittedly The Sun is the worst rag in the world to make this sort of point.

HakunaDentata · 27/03/2018 13:24

Backingvocals I think they did give them an exclusive but were then shocked to see the headline. How naive can you be.

Agree whether or not it's sensationalist depends on how the Sun got their story, the Sun never came to my wedding. If the couple approached the Sun wanting publicity for their unusual wedding then they can't be surprised when the unusualness was focused on. If a guest just sold pictures to the Sun without their consent then they have cause to complain.

0phelia · 27/03/2018 13:26

I think the whole "just two people getting on in life" is a bit redundant seeing as they invited reporters to their wedding.

The whole trans ideology is about making a spectacle of "normal"

Man weds woman. Too dull. Both trans people- let's blow firehorns! They are not the first Transgender couple (both trans) to get married.

In my town, two trans people for married but they both transwomen. They didn't expect a spectacle of it even though it was far more unusual than this pair.

CapnHaddock · 27/03/2018 13:27

I think they were invited. Honestly, what did they expect? The only reason anyone is interested in them is because they've transitioned. Otherwise they're a bog standard boring couple, albeit ones who seem to have a nebulous grip on reality.

I think that if you're horrified by your bedfellows on this issue, it might be time to have a good hard look at yourself and wonder why you're now on the same side...

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 27/03/2018 13:29

Man marries woman shocker

Whinberry · 27/03/2018 13:30

Couple get married. I wish them well in their married life and would advise them to stay away from The Sun.

53rdWay · 27/03/2018 13:33

tbh I’m only interested in strangers’ weddings when they end up on AIBU. But glad these two are happy, hope the Sun was only there by invitation.

Mumsnut · 27/03/2018 13:34

Can't get my knickers in a knot about this. I wish them well.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/03/2018 13:37

It is unusual as they have both transitioned, hence it being in the papers. Newspapers print things that will sell papers, and use headlines that will promote sales.

As for the couple, they look happy and I wish them well.

Thanks for the snide comment Catspaws but I only said I agreed with the words in red. Nice to see transquisition on MN though.

They both state that they were never their born sex....

Which is a shift in narrative from this article www.ft.com/content/5af4d0e0-a747-11e6-8b69-02899e8bd9d1
where Hannah talks quite comfortably about the realities of accepting yourself as a transgender woman and privilege in her previous life as white male in the army.

This shows me how much the the narrative has been shifted between 2016 and now from it's okay to live your life as transgendered to we were never our birth sex in the first place.

They seem like a happy couple though and I wish them a great life together. If they invited The Sun to their wedding then unfortunately the daft headline was always going to be part of the deal. It's what The Sun do.

Datun · 27/03/2018 14:01

I disagree profoundly with the ideology that says two people have always been the opposite sex.

Them getting married doesn't really maximise or minimise that viewpoint.

I can be glad they're happy and, at the same time, irritated that they uphold a damaging ideology.

But I agree it's a click bait article that sensationalises something that not only is deadly serious, but is almost guaranteed to cause further division.

LizzieSiddal · 27/03/2018 14:38

The headline is horrible but their response “I’ve always been a woman” is just not true.

I think the media now realise this is a “hot” topic and will print sensational stuff.
Unfortunately for them, a lot of Trans people are going to find out the general public will never agree with narrative “I’ve always been.....”
