Ok sounds gossipy but PL is on the Wright Stuff right now and disagreed with Anne whatshername from the chase and Anne just said “you should know you used to be a boy” - huge Awkward silence.

Tbh, I don’t like Anne and her reply to Lees was harsh and unnecessary. I really don’t like PLs either to be clear. It was quite a 😱 moment.

You might all love Anne Hegerty, but she probably wouldn't love anyone on here. She openly follows a men's rights activist and 'Feminist Bullshit' on Twitter, alongside some other UKIP, anti-Muslim type stuff.

LostArt · 15/03/2018 12:39

"Just in case I need to make it clear - I don't agree with her. I just think she has more right to make a statement on it re her experience of it, than PL does."

Exactly, anything PL says is through observing or imagining, not experience. PL is entitled to say what they think, but it's not coming from lived experience.

Yes that might be true but however repugnant these views are to you she is allowed to state them.

I think you misunderstand. I didn't say I found those views repugnant. And of course she should be allowed to state them. But as someone who follows Anne on Twitter I just found it funny to see feminists declaring their love for her. One of her most recent liked tweets states: 'I want nothing to do with Western feminists'.

BeyondDeadlySiren · 15/03/2018 12:49

I can love a fellow autistic woman for getting women with autism into the light, as well as being in awe of her knowledge. Doesn't mean I agree with all of her views.

I'm sure she's more than capable of doing the same.

misscockerspaniel · 15/03/2018 12:52

You should know you used to be a boy I hope that was followed up with "and now you are a man".

Biology matters. It doesn't lie. (Unlike people trying to convince others that transwomen are women).

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 15/03/2018 12:53

To be fair those that shout the loudest ARE the extremists most of the time. If she's spending her time on Twitter she is only going to be hearing the loudesy Twitter people.

LittlePaintBox · 15/03/2018 12:56

It reminds me of The Emperor's New Clothes. We're not allowed to say trans women have any knowledge of what it's like to be male, or of male socialisation, but that's not the case for many people.

Lees' story is that she was brought up in a very rough estate and suffered homophobia before transitioning, so maybe her experience of the old boys' network is minimal.

But since she makes her living as a 'trans advocate', it's asking a bit much for people tp pretend she has no experience of being male!

SpringNowPlease2018 · 15/03/2018 12:56

seems a reasonable comment?!

deadringer · 15/03/2018 12:59

I didn't see the programme and this is off topic but I was wondering if it came up whether Anne is paid the same as her male counterparts?

terfsRus · 15/03/2018 13:00

I think this transphobia business needs to be unpacked a bit.
In the context of this show, I don't know what Anne's motivation for saying what she said was. But the fact remains that Paris Lees DID use to be a boy so, like Jaycee said they should be able to take that sort of comment with grace and move on. Maybe the male socialization PL experienced would give them a better understanding of the oldboysclub that could be shared on air and perhaps that's what Anne meant. Knee jerking about words really doesn't help. This seems to be an incendiary subject right now.

I think if trans and non-trans people could engage in conversation and really move the subject forward so that trans and women's rights could be respected without prejudice that to me would be the ideal outcome.

BeyondDeadlySiren · 15/03/2018 13:01

Miss, it was followed by silence and the producers screaming "dead air, dead air, cut to commercials!" in the SCR Grin

derxa · 15/03/2018 13:03

I think what Anne, Germaine Greer and Jenni Murray have got in common is that they're 'old' women and tend to say what they think re the transgender cult.

LadyMcLadyCrisps · 15/03/2018 13:08

I love Anne because she is not restrained by the complexities of Social norms, therefore is happy and comfortable in expressing her opinion, regardless of the new Orwellian tendency towards policing thoughts and opinions. I dont agree with her on everything, and equally I dont specifically define myself as a ‘feminist’, although I do agree with some feminist principles.
None of these positions are mutually exclusive.

OyO · 15/03/2018 13:14

Failing to see how relates to feminist chat

BeyondDeadlySiren · 15/03/2018 13:20

Multiple levels, surely?

  1. PL is a self proclaimed feminist and "modern suffragette"
  2. gender pay gap - effect on women
  3. old boys networks - effect on women
  4. AH increases visibility of women with autism
  5. PL is an prominent transactivist - effect on women
OyO · 15/03/2018 13:28

By that logic any thread on here could be whittled down to a feminist chat.

TERFragetteCity · 15/03/2018 13:30

By that logic any thread on here could be whittled down to a feminist chat.

And?

BeyondDeadlySiren · 15/03/2018 13:31

Well, it's generally up to whoever starts the thread where they put it, unless it's blatantly out somewhere to be goady.

Are their other subjects you feel are more deserving?

BeyondDeadlySiren · 15/03/2018 13:32

Oh ffs, put and there
Stupid autocorrect!

MyBrilliantDisguise · 15/03/2018 13:35

Anne Hegarty is only 59! Hardly an old woman!

BertrandRussell · 15/03/2018 13:58

To be fair, I think “old” was in inverted commas- meaning older feminists. Hope so, anyway!
