Relevant section:

Meanwhile, a woman who criticised a transgender charity on Twitter has been questioned under caution by police and told she will be arrested if she tries to leave the country. Kellie-Jay Keen- Minshull accused the group Mermaids of “suppressing free speech”.

She had accused Mermaids, which calls for children to be allowed irreversible sex-change treatment the NHS currently prohibits, of “prey[ing]” on gay teenagers and of “mass child abuse”. Mermaids declined to comment.

Women get rape and violence threat via twitter all the damn time and no one cares. People get racial abuse every day.
Why are they making such a drama out of this?

Popchyk · 13/03/2018 09:49

Bangkok, Andrew Gilligan was the one who wrote the article on MESMAC.

I've just looked at his Twitter and he is saying "Brian Mynott, a local therapist who works with abuse victims, says he has spoken to a further three people who claimed to have been sexually harassed or asked for sex by Mesmac staff when they went there for help."

and...

"As early as 2009 at least three Mesmac trustees, including the then chair, resigned "en bloc" because of their concern about its "unacceptable" conduct policy and lack of professionalism, one of those who resigned says. (Mesmac denies they resigned over the conduct policy.)"

Gilligan has been separately critical of Mermaids. But I think he sees it as two separate bodies acting unprofessionally, but independently of each other. Which may be the case.

One thing, though. Gilligan is not a man who is going to let this go.

I won't speculate on MESMAC again on this thread, don't want to derail from Posie's situation. I will keep an eye on the press and start a new thread if any more information comes to light.

Flowers for Posie.

Popchyk Another dubious decision in West Yorks.

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 13/03/2018 10:07

I know misogyny isn't a hate crime but between us someone must have received some abusive racist/lesbophobic tweets that would fall under the legislation. It would be interesting to report a selection and see what response we get total disinterest

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 13/03/2018 10:07

Thank you posie for speaking the truth. Will donate when I can.

Sittinonthefloor · 13/03/2018 10:08

Presumably if the child is really a girl then the surgery is FGM and thus there a some legal issues for the parent? FGM is horrific, castration is genital mutilation + removal of testes and fertility.

What is the response from the police when you report these?

DontCisgenderMe · 13/03/2018 10:24

Popchyk, dubious friendships and ignoring reports of abuse are nothing new for the West Yorkshire police. They were also big mates with Jimmy Savile.

hackmum · 13/03/2018 10:33

Sitting: "Presumably if the child is really a girl then the surgery is FGM and thus there a some legal issues for the parent?"

Your logic is impeccable. Grin

But even without the debate about whether the child is male or female, then surely it's illegal to perform mutilating surgery on your child? If it would be illegal to have it done in the UK, then wouldn't it be equally illegal to take your child to another country to be done? Just as it would be if you were a parent who took your child to another country to have FGM.

Why hasn't the CEO of Mermaids been prosecuted for child abuse?

I've just donated to the crowd funder here. I wish it could have been more @posieparker - you're so brave for not backing down and saying 2+2 = 5 after all.

therealposieparker · 13/03/2018 11:03

Again, I'm overwhelmed. I mean, I knew people cared about this stuff but I didn't realise how much x

Flowers posie

BeyondDeadlySiren · 13/03/2018 11:55

Wow posie, the speed your fund is growing is amazing! Shock

We got your back ✊

LangCleg · 13/03/2018 12:11

Posie - even if you are not charged, you should use the money to make legally-backed complaints to the police (and, perhaps, to Twitter).

aRespectableBureaudeChange · 13/03/2018 12:16

Lang - my thoughts too, although not my place to suggest - obviously have to check with contributors I guess - but I would support that.

Kokeshi123 · 13/03/2018 12:32

Donation made. First crowd funding donation I've ever made! How exciting. It feels good to actually be doing something.

Popchyk · 13/03/2018 13:52

Anything we can do to cheer you up, Posie?

Who will play you when this whole thing is made into a film?

I'm thinking Carey Mulligan or Julianne Moore.

Probably Denzel Washington as your older, well-spoken solicitor.

OldCrone · 13/03/2018 14:56

@TimbuktuTimbuktu
Have you received threats of violence? If so, you should report them to the police who should take action. The police only got involved in Posie's case because Mermaids reported her.

CPS Guidance
Part A: Offence types
This Part addresses the offences commonly committed via social media and identifies four distinct categories of offences.
Category 1
Communications which may constitute threats of violence to the person or damage to property.

MotheringShites · 13/03/2018 15:21

Delurking to offer support. Posie you are incredibly brave and an inspiration. I’ve only just twigged that you are also Kellie from Wiltshire who was treated so appallingly by the aptly named, O’Brien on LBC. Your written response to that encounter was so moving and powerful. Keep fighting.

Juliammea · 13/03/2018 15:25

I didn't realise that either. That was so upsetting.

This is really starting to feel like a war on women.

therealposieparker · 13/03/2018 15:37

Mothering.... yes it's me.!!

SweetGrapes · 13/03/2018 15:41

Donated to the crowdfunder for Posie Parker.

It's absolutely horrendous you have been targeted like this. Hope you can get a shit hot legal team! Flowers

SweetGrapes · 13/03/2018 15:44

Who will play you when this whole thing is made into a film? I was thinking this about JJ the other day!

We need a whole new thread on the cast of this fast paced, action filled, ball busting blockbuster Grin

Bangkokhilton · 13/03/2018 15:45

@MotheringShites do you have a link to the interaction Posie had with O'Brien (or her response?). I would be interested to hear/read this.
