Relevant section:

Meanwhile, a woman who criticised a transgender charity on Twitter has been questioned under caution by police and told she will be arrested if she tries to leave the country. Kellie-Jay Keen- Minshull accused the group Mermaids of “suppressing free speech”.

She had accused Mermaids, which calls for children to be allowed irreversible sex-change treatment the NHS currently prohibits, of “prey[ing]” on gay teenagers and of “mass child abuse”. Mermaids declined to comment.

@HereComesTheSun1
Would you consider asking MNHQ to edit the title of this thread from 'Woman questioned under caution...' to 'Mumsnetter questioned under caution...' ?

HelenaDove · 11/03/2018 20:24

Absolutely batshit.

Good luck Posie.

This is not the first time ive heard of the police getting involved in something that is usually classed as a civil matter.

Up in Scotland the police were called because a tenant wrote about poor and dangerous workmanship in a blog and this was just nine days after Grenfell.

MissBeehiving · 11/03/2018 20:33

Absolutely bizarre times.

I would also like to know if Mattel are happy for Mermaids to be using their copyrighted imagery for their training material?
Especially as the company has tried in the last few years to step away from the stereotypes with a more diverse range of dolls.

Hm.

I can tell you that all of this is just ramped up nonsense

I want to tell you something. If you bother to listen, Mermaids has been, and will always be a great support network for trans people. One little 'issue' will not change this what so ever. They have set up much needed online chats for parents and the young people themselves, phone ins for parents and other community events.

One of you mentioned Dr. Webberly. I can tell you, I have had experience with her, and I must say she is an impassioned Dr. who has done so much for trans people, especially in Wales. By giving treatment to those who would otherwise wait many years under the NHS.
So for you, she has committed a 'crime' by allowing young people who want to stop changes that affect their bodies forever. I met her at a trans event a few years ago, and her advocacy has helped many hundreds of trans* people - yet you all tend to focus on one issue, just to try and bring the whole trans movement down. The NHS has had huge trouble adapting to this, and it is right for trans advocacy groups and private GP's to step in.

I can tell you that you do not represent the feminist movement, and you seem to all have an obsession with trans* issues, while disregarding real problems like equal pay, tampon tax and even gender stereotypes themselves.

Let me tell you. We are not living in an 'authoritarian' police state of the Eastern Block - this is nonsense and hysteria. You can express your unpopular and divisive views, but the facts remain.

Good day and good luck.

boatyardblues · 11/03/2018 20:42

Good day and good luck.

Oh good. The ploppers have arrived. Hmm

terfsRus · 11/03/2018 20:42

TransRealitySophia
what is the one issue everyone here is focusing on? I'm confused.

therealposieparker · 11/03/2018 20:42

So Trans...

You're up for the police getting involved in issues you object to? So if you're pro life and someone says something pro choice you think they should be arrested?

Interesting.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 11/03/2018 20:43

Nailed it thebewilderness

The entire country is suffering from Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy

therealposieparker · 11/03/2018 20:43

If trans ideology is nothing else it is an advocate for gender stereotypes.

but the facts remain

The irony. Because facts seem totally absent in the TRA world, which seems to operate in its own reality.
So..,What facts? The fact that mermaids perpetuates damaging gender stereotypes and encourages parents to mutilate children? The fact that the founder took her child abroad for irreversible surgery that’s illegal in this country and triggered a change in the law in Thailand? Those facts? Or the fact that someone has been arrested and interviewed under caution for expressing an opinion? That’s a fact, and not a terribly nice one.

You can sod off telling me I’m not a feminist. And the irony of going on about equal pay when self ID will destroy any chance of collating the actual data we need to solve the issue. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I bloody despair. Boys who play with dolls are just boys who play with dolls. You don’t react by telling them they’re the opposite sex and castrating them.

Hopefully this will blow up and mermaids will have some serious investigation into their methods and collusion in child abuse.

Blimey. Sorry but I earn a living fixing equal pay and you know the NGO I worked for this year are delivering girls menstrual pads globally to enable girls education. And I still have time to worry about sex based rights.

Let me tell you.

I mean that's a lot of telling and saying. Does your post identify as a man?

thebewilderness · 11/03/2018 20:53

TransRealitySophia
Mermaids will be remembered by history as one of the most damaging hoax charities for the evil they have done to the children while the authorities twiddled their thumbs.

Truscum · 11/03/2018 20:54

TransRealitySophia Mermaids is a crackpot organisation that’s shouldn’t be let within miles of young children or confused parents. It blathers on, reinforcing gender stereotypes and it’s founder is a child abuser who, in my view, should be in prison for what she has subjected her child to.

I can tell you that you do not represent the feminist movement

I can tell you that you are wrong. Twelve million unique users on this site and this particular chat section is seeing a massive upswing in traffic. And it just keeps growing. Those little teeny bopper feminists on Twitter, who don’t even know women had to fight for their own spaces 100 years ago, and who put men first, do not represent feminism.

Let me tell you. We are not living in an 'authoritarian' police state of the Eastern Block - this is nonsense and hysteria. You can express your unpopular and divisive views, but the facts remain

Two points.

  1. Women obviously aren’t free to express their views. Did you not read this thread?
  1. You need a reality check if you think the views expressed on this site are ‘unpopular’. As the public grows more and more aware of what is actually going on gender critical voices are getting louder and growing quickly in number. That isn’t a coincidence.

Ah the first plopper has arrived to tell us we are doing feminism wrong.

JustHooking · 11/03/2018 20:55

Populist opinions are mainstream now
It didn't help when our bloody politicians decided experts should be ignored
It blows my mind how many have accepted that we have an inner male/female essence or brain
The thread ' where are all the trans men ' or similar title is full of posters who have accepted this
Brains develop according to their environment. The human brain is very underdeveloped at birth. Where is the female essence?
And how does the infant female trapped in a male body know they should reach for a pink sippy cup to demonstrate their female essence
Gender norms change over time and place so it's incredible that an infant instinctively knows what indicates male/female in their time and place
More likely they are like the vegan cat only more tragic

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 11/03/2018 20:58

@TransRealitySophia

Agree totally with you we all should be behind tampon tax abolition. Please consider supporting Plan International's work with helping girls stay in education by providing reusable pads. Thanks for your interest in this, this NGO is close to my heart.

Melamin · 11/03/2018 21:00

Who isn't behind tampon tax abolition (apart from the Treasury)?

TERFousBreakdown · 11/03/2018 21:01

Goodness, this is chilling to the bone!

Posie Flowers & Gin - hand in there, you're a hero!

So when exactly are we changing our post-Brexit name to EngSoc, then?
