International Women's Day Mass Cancelling of Labour Memberships Action

leyat · 06/03/2018 14:54

I am passing on an action started by @mayday4women on Twitter; they aren't on Mumsnet so they said I could post here for them.

Basically they are getting a lot of women contacting them saying they are cancelling their Labour memberships due to the decision by Labour's NEC to essentially take on self ID as party policy in every area, including re AWS. And they think it'd be a more powerful statement if women did it en masse together on International Women's Day, which is the 8th March (Thursday).

The idea is to let Labour see how important this is to women, and how badly they are letting women down. Everyone can always reinstate their memberships down the line, but this is a way to be seen and heard, and to make a statement. I'm not a member of any political party myself right now, but as I say I am passing this on and doing all I can to support my sisters in the Labour Party.

Mayday for women are drawing up a statement, and you can get in touch with them directly if you want to let them know you are taking part in the action: mayday4women@gmail

Cheers!

Considering oj is meant to be quite intelligent, I do wonder how he justifies to himself his lack of debating skills on this subject. If I couldn't back up my position with logic, I'd be questioning the validity of my position. My theory is either he knows it's hokum but is utterly determined to 'be kind' and side with the (male) underdog (remember trans men remain women 🙄) or he just becomes too irate to even think straight when this comes up. Possibly because he hates women who don't defer and who haven't stuck with his idea of women as victims, who need protection and can't speak up for themselves.

Popchyk · 07/03/2018 14:42

I don't think he is much of a worker to be quite honest.

He can't be bothered to do basic research or educate himself on broad issues.

He'd rather have slanging matches on Twitter and play the victim then quickly cobble together an article about how he's the victim of slanging matches on Twitter. That's how he makes his money.

Kneedeepinunicorns · 07/03/2018 14:43

Interesting it's come up a lot the last few weeks 'professional' and 'university educated' being characteristics that make a woman less deserving, more contemptible, in need of putting down.

Who'd have thunk in 2018 we'd be back to apparently intelligent men disapproving of women being educated? Fits nicely with lady brain and gender stereotyping and keeping women in their place, doesn't it? Women's rights were only ever on loan, and obviously under protest, this has always been right under the surface.

thebewilderness · 07/03/2018 20:20

Isn't OJ a professional transgendered? Isn't that what he does for a living?

Ereshkigal · 07/03/2018 20:24

Reminds me very much of Donald Trump signing anti-abortion legislation in revenge for the 2017 Women’s March.

YYY. Exactly this! But no it's not "petty", it's our fault.

Ereshkigal · 07/03/2018 20:27

I love Mr1984, can we get it trending?

A Crisis Of Misogyny: A Plea To The Labour Party

Nick Cohen linked to article above stating this:

Nick Cohen @ nickcohen4
Through centuries men have often sought to control women by dividing them into those they deem worthy by virtue of their adherence to patriarchal dictates, and those they consider beyond the pale."

Not at all surprised by Cohen's position on this. And im rather pleased at those who are pissed off / surprised by Cohen's position.

Good and well respected left leaning journalist.

Also worth a read.

www.newstatesman.com/politics/staggers/2018/03/why-women-leave-political-parties?amp&__twitter_impression=true
Why women leave political parties

Probably because they’re under greater time-pressure, female party members, when compared to male members anyway, tend to prefer online to offline campaign activities. They’re Facebookers rather than door-knockers.

That might end up being more significant than it appears at first glance. After all, would-be candidates use their door-knocking tallies to prove their commitment and campaign skills to selection committees. Women may therefore be at a disadvantage, even if they do see party membership as the first step to a career in politics.

Anyone like to explain why that is, and why this is not true of potential AWS trans candidates?

Trumpdump · 07/03/2018 22:51

We need to stop mentioning OJ. Like Katie Hopkins (but with less charm), he makes his living from being a troll. If we all stopped discussing his opinions, his career would vanish.

Gacapa · 07/03/2018 22:55

Ok, I'm just going to throw this out there: could there be significant number of Labour/Momentum men who are entrenched in fetishis.

My last ex is a full on leftie Corbynite Londoner, who has a closed mind to Tories, Blair, Thatcher...y'know the type. Full on Momentum dick.

He's also the most narcissistic misogynistic porn obsessed prostituting user and sad old fuck living on fond memories of shagging women in toilets in return for giving them cocaine.

I found trans porn hidden away. He was going out with some mate who dressed like a stereotype of stripper, a man claiming that to trot around making it into some camp spectacle of what they called "sluts". There were stockings and sexy toys tucked away.

He proclaims himself as a hard left Socialist. But I am wondering if it's all just some weird turn on for them.

Maybe they're getting a thrill? What goes hand in hand with power and money? Depravity.

He accused me of being a traitor when I left the party. But I'd rather stand up for women and class based analysis drawn fro material reality. Than some bro-so wank compulsion.

Could all this be - in the crudest terms - pressing these men's buttons. Even Corbyn's?

Itsbeenaverylongweek · 08/03/2018 00:27

Hate to say it but I think their change of terminology seems quite smart. Using the term anti-trans activist seems more likely to elicit sympathy for them than to continue using TERFs and other abusive terms.
From most of what I've read on here and the other threads, I'd say the majority of us are in no way anti-trans but completely anti self id but that doesn't sound so unreasonable does it?

thebewilderness · 08/03/2018 00:36

Feminists argued for years that they did not exclude trans identified females, only makes. Now we are back at square one to argue that trans identified females are not the issue.
Self ID strips females of their sex based protections.

OlennasWimple · 08/03/2018 00:39

Anyone like to explain why that is, and why this is not true of potential AWS trans candidates?

TBF we can all think of one putative AWS trans candidate who is very active in setting up Facebook groups and on other SM...

(Plus - very very few trans people pass. It's one thing to talk about lovely Doreen who just wants to be accepted as the women they always knew that they were, and looks reasonably feminine in the posed headshot on the campaign leaflet. Quite another to find Doreen on your doorstep, all 6'2" with the physique of a prop forward of her...)

MistressDeeCee · 08/03/2018 01:04

I question the wisdom of having Madigan as an invited speaker at any event given how bored everyone looked during the last one where someone took photos

I want Lily to go on a campaign trail, speaking everywhere possible. Go very public. Let the ludicrousness be seen and heard. I'd enjoy the catastrophe. Very much.

2rebecca · 08/03/2018 13:26

Is this actually happening or has it been cancelled?

Popchyk · 08/03/2018 13:33

Has Labour even announced it yet?

I am imagining the full Donald Trump razzmatazz treatment around the announcement. They'll probably hire the O2 arena or something. Wild scenes as Jeremy Corbyn emerges from a puff of smoke backstage and enters the arena with ticker tape and balloons descending from the ceiling.

In the background, Anna Lee, Heather Peto, Sophie Cook and Lily Madigan belt out their karaoke version of Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves.

Nah. Won't happen. They'd never be in the background.

BabetteAteOatmeal · 08/03/2018 13:39

OP how confident are you that this is a proper outfit and not a means of gaining names for another list? There hasn’t been anything announced and it’s all gone very quiet.

TulipsInAJug · 08/03/2018 13:40

This needs to be posted again. Jeremy Corbyn has 'liked' a post sneering at #labourlosingwomen and Maydayforwomen and saying it's welcoming it because it's just #labourlosingtransphobes

LifelongVaginaOwner · 08/03/2018 13:43

I think that's Corbyn being tagged in the photo rather than liking the tweet.

TulipsInAJug · 08/03/2018 13:47

When it says 'Jeremy Corbyn and 7 others' does that not mean they have liked the post? Confused

OddBoots · 08/03/2018 13:52

Oh the poor Labour Party policy makers, they don'y really want to strike out at women, it's just that those opinionated women drive them to it! If only those women could learn not to make them so angry then they wouldn't get hit.

RedToothBrush · 08/03/2018 13:57

This is the original tweet.

twitter.com/mimmymum/status/971118316097073155

Its not a like. You can go through the list of likes Corbyn isn't one of them. Corbyn is down as a tagged person to the tweet together with Labour LGBT, Mr1984, Momentum, Maria Miller, Dawn Butler, Pink News and transadvocate.

Ereshkigal · 08/03/2018 14:06

Did you see in the replies to that, some idiotic try hard tweeted a Nazi propaganda image to a gender critical woman and because she didn't distance herself from it or recognise it as Nazi (the text is in German) is claiming she's a terrible bigot.

StoatofDisarray · 08/03/2018 15:22

RedToothBrush I can't see it, I appear to be blocked.
