Biological SEX MATTERS. How many mumsnetters say "aye" to this campaign?

1000 replies

SexMatters · 05/03/2018 10:34

This document and campaign called 'Sex Matters' is a collaborative effort by amazing and knowledgeable mumsnetters on a couple of threads in FWR.

To move forward with the campaign, the organisations and individuals approached will need to know who is behind it, and the honest truth, is that mumsnetters have spearheaded it.

That does not mean that other campaigners can't get involved or even take greater ownership of it. But it needs a bio in order to introduce it to people and organisations to get started and I need your consent to describe the campaign this way: 'mumsnetter led' (and maybe even some suggestions for writing a bio on this thread).

So, you amazing gender-critical mumsnetters, do you say 'aye'?

The document has been updated on the thread, in attempt to take on board all the suggested changes and requirements.

There has been some discussion about page 6, whether it is necessary or should be taken out or not. It has been re-jigged a bit and re-worded to help with the flow and development of the narrative.

But, for now I think it needs to be kept in, because so many people are wrongly informed and feel unnecessarily guilty and take pity on the people transgressing women's boundaries, so a statement needs to be made to the effect that it is unfair for a handful of individuals to make the entire world bend to their ideology and beliefs, even if reality is painful for them to admit.

So lets keep it in for now, and move on to creating a bio about 'who we are'... proposals welcome.. Smile

Adult human females? Wink

I’m an academic.

SexMatters · 09/03/2018 12:07

gardengeek re crowdfunders... that might be part of next steps.

Also, I wonder if mumsnetters have suggestions for 'actions' to take next?
eg -write to your MP - should we start campaigns targeting certain businesses in turn - etc?
Let me know your suggestions and PM me if you like Smile

btw - reading through it, I feel so proud of every super-amazing one of you who has collaborated on it - some of the points I'm nodding along with thinking - great! Apologies though, because I have no recollection of who said what! Star Star Star Star Star

Also - more 'ayes' and 'nays' etc welcome to inform further pies!

I think a nice easy way of clicking to agree would be good to get a whole weight of voices behind it.

SexMatters · 09/03/2018 12:19

I like that idea! I wonder how you could do it, without multiple clicking invalidating it....

Probably simplest to require an email address too. But I don’t know any platform that does this aside from petition sites. Maybe there is one though?

SexMatters · 09/03/2018 12:46

Maybe a petition is okay. As long as people don't need to disclose their real names to be seen publicly.

Aye! One hundred percent. You have my full support OP.

SexMatters · 09/03/2018 14:12

How is this for an initial bio draft:

We are a group of over 500 people (and growing) who came together on the Mumsnet feminist boards, sharing the same concern that our rights and choices are being eroded as part of a cultural shift towards denying human biology, on the part of decision-makers, businesses, services and the media.

We come from across the political spectrum, and different professions, such as academics, scientists, doctors, teachers, lawyers and stay at home parents, we are women and men, including those who identify as trans.

We believe that sex matters.

ps - thanks for the support!

Is it worth adding we are not all parents? Not that it should matter but may be in danger if just becoming a “mums” thing by press.

SexMatters · 09/03/2018 14:18

Maybe:

We are a group of over 500 people (and growing) who came together on the Mumsnet feminist boards, although not all of us are parents, sharing the same concern that our rights and choices are being eroded as part of a cultural shift towards denying human biology, on the part of decision-makers, businesses, services and the media.

We come from across the political spectrum, and different professions, such as academics, scientists, doctors, teachers, lawyers and stay at home parents, we are women and men, including those who identify as trans.

Aye

Lemonjello · 09/03/2018 14:21

Bio looks perfect.

I was looking at companies online where you can design and print your own stickers. If we agreed good wording (even just sex matters and the web address) people who want to could get their own printed up to stick up and about to raise awareness.

LonginesPrime · 09/03/2018 14:22

I know it's none of my business now, but I'd replace 'we come from across' with 'our views span' or similar.

I think the revised draft looks much better, OP - thanks for listening to people's concerns and comments.

BetsyM00 · 09/03/2018 14:24

I think a lot of women end up on this forum saying, 'yes, this is horrific, but what can I actually do?' so an Actions section would be great.

Writing to MPs/MSPs, tying in with guidance from Woman's Place and SAGES.

There's a list on the Gender Critical To Do List - petitions, orgs to write to, etc

Link in with the direct actions taken by #ManFriday

Have a petition of our own, a SexMatters swimathon at Hampstead Heath, unindate TopShop with postcards all on the one day with our opinion, etc.

Printable leaflets and stickers for us to take everywhere we go.

We come from across the political spectrum, and different professions, such as academics, scientists, doctors, teachers, lawyers and stay at home parents, we are women and men, including those who identify as trans.

Suggest shorted punchier sentences:
We come from across the political spectrum. We come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. We include academics, scientists, doctors, teachers, lawyers, shop workers and stay at home parents. We are women and men, and include those who identify as trans.
