Biological SEX MATTERS. How many mumsnetters say "aye" to this campaign?

1000 replies

SexMatters · 05/03/2018 10:34

This document and campaign called 'Sex Matters' is a collaborative effort by amazing and knowledgeable mumsnetters on a couple of threads in FWR.

To move forward with the campaign, the organisations and individuals approached will need to know who is behind it, and the honest truth, is that mumsnetters have spearheaded it.

That does not mean that other campaigners can't get involved or even take greater ownership of it. But it needs a bio in order to introduce it to people and organisations to get started and I need your consent to describe the campaign this way: 'mumsnetter led' (and maybe even some suggestions for writing a bio on this thread).

So, you amazing gender-critical mumsnetters, do you say 'aye'?

Aye

I don't get the haircut thing either, I've often had a male haircutter and my husband had a female barber for a while. I do worry the important issues are being lost in stuff that just looks a bit bonkers and red tape heavy.

Roustar · 05/03/2018 20:18

Aye!

LonginesPrime · 05/03/2018 20:23

Longines, transwomen are Male and therefore cant be lesbians,

Right, ok, but they're also human beings.

It's not for me to tell a transwoman that no-one will find them attractive because they have a penis so they might as well go home.

SexMatters · 05/03/2018 20:23

If you were a Muslim woman 2rebecca?

How would it work in practice though for say hairdressers? Does every hairdresser have to have a special cubicle for people who don't want someone of the opposite sex watching as they have their hair cut or does it just mean if someone opens up a women only hairdresser m to f transexuals can't use it even the ones who have had genital surgery and look like women?

Surely it's up to the hairdresser how they work things out - it's their business!

But it should be perfectly legal and acceptable to have a salon for females only, or to have female only sessions, with no m t f in order to accommodate for example Orthodox Jewish or Muslim women.

It's not like there's a huge shortage of salons happy to have to have transwomen as clients.

sexnotgender · 05/03/2018 20:48

Big fat aye from me.

2rebecca · 05/03/2018 20:55

I have nothing against salons being single sex only if they want, but am concerned the right to choose single sex this that and the other might be legally interpreted as an obligation to provide single sex services which would be difficult for small businesses. I also see no logic for excluding fully transitioned m to f transexuals from these facilities, even though I don't think men can become women I don't see these people as a danger to women, particularly women just having a haircut.

Aye.

A couple of points in the science facts section at the end don't seem quite right, though:

The definition of intersex ends with the clause that they are unable to sexually reproduce, but that's not necessarily the case. Fertility is often compromised but not necessarily eliminated by various intersex conditions, and some intersex people may have normal fertility. Is it necessary to mention intersex fertility at all?

The female sex organs need to include ovaries as well as uterus, vagina and vagina. They're far more important than the vulva (biologically speaking) because they're where the gametes are produced!

(For consistency, the male sex organs should really include scrotum as well as penis and testes. The scrotum and penis are the external sex organs for males (like the vulva is for females), while testes are internal. Admittedly, this point is nitpicking... )

Transwoman are currently welcome at lesbian events.
So it should be.
Transwomen have the right like everyone else to come along to LGBT events to hang out, hook up, have fun. They currently have this freedom.

On the occasion that lesbians may like to for whatever reason hold an event exclusive to female bodied people, lesbians, bisexuals, whoever on the basis of the attendees sex,
They should be free to do so.
Without accusations of being "transphobic".
"Bigoted"
"Hateful"

See Mitchfest.

The world's largest haven for lesbians, women's only event. Half a million yearly attended.
It was closed down by trans activists because it was female only.

I agree. A big part of a women's biological need for a separate space could be due to issues with menstruation due to the uterus, a miscarriage, the potential to get pregnant if raped, the need for smear tests and the pill, due to that biology.

Inspectors said children enjoy lots of different experiences, but that the school does not tackle “difficult and contemporary issues” such as extremism, radicalisation and gender orientation.

This came up on my Facebook feed talking about an English school that has been downgraded from Good.
