Biological SEX MATTERS. How many mumsnetters say "aye" to this campaign?

1000 replies

SexMatters · 05/03/2018 10:34

This document and campaign called 'Sex Matters' is a collaborative effort by amazing and knowledgeable mumsnetters on a couple of threads in FWR.

To move forward with the campaign, the organisations and individuals approached will need to know who is behind it, and the honest truth, is that mumsnetters have spearheaded it.

That does not mean that other campaigners can't get involved or even take greater ownership of it. But it needs a bio in order to introduce it to people and organisations to get started and I need your consent to describe the campaign this way: 'mumsnetter led' (and maybe even some suggestions for writing a bio on this thread).

So, you amazing gender-critical mumsnetters, do you say 'aye'?

No one is claiming to speak for all mumsnetters or that mumnetters are all of one mind.

Relax.

Shouldn't they be able to have date nights for same-sex attracted people only?

Do you mean something like lesbian speed dating? Personally, I don't feel that I have any right to tell a transwoman they can't come to a lesbian dating event and I have no issue with their being there.

There's a danger of exclusion with referring to 'same-sex attracted people' in terms of dating anyway as many women who date other women don't identify as lesbian, so lots of places have made moves to be more inclusive on that front over recent years. The notion of only gold star lesbians being allowed in a venue and no bisexual/pansexual/questioning women allowed would feel a bit odd in this day and age, but I appreciate that's just based on my experience and that lesbians might be highly segregated in other areas.

Regressionconfession · 05/03/2018 20:05

Aye

MeganChips · 05/03/2018 20:07

Aye, great document.

SexMatters · 05/03/2018 20:08

Longines From what I've learned in all this - any kind of lesbian dating gets inundated by TIMs which undermines the right of lesbians to same-sex events.

I think there needs to remain a way to describe, recognise and invite the biologically female sex for things like political representation, single sex areas such as shared sleeping quarters for children, lesbian date nights, or whatever it is.

HermioneWeasley · 05/03/2018 20:11

Longines, transwomen are Male and therefore cant be lesbians, who are same SEX attracted women. They have no business at lesbian events.

In response to OP, aye x10000

SlowlyShrinking · 05/03/2018 20:11

Definitely aye. Great job 👍

My only concern is the toilets issue. What happens if shops and small businesses don't have enough toilets for single sex toilets or if it's just cubicles open to anyone then are they exempt? Also my swimming pool just has a changing area with cubicles off corridors open to all with a few larger family cubicles and communal showers where everyone keeps their costumes on.
I agree with the principle if people are having to get naked and change in front of strangers, but don't have a problem with unisex cubicles and toilets. I also recently went on a walking holiday in Iceland and we all slept in the same large bunk room and I didn't have a problem with that. Many mountain huts don't have the facilities for segregation.
Keeping women's sports XX only, keeping women's prisons XX only and keeping places where women feel vulnerable like women's aid refuges XX only (rare intersex conditions excepted unless they give the person an unfair advantage in sports due to raised testosterone levels) are the main issues for me.

GinAndSonic · 05/03/2018 20:12

Bisexuals are same sex attracted so not excluded.

rosy71 · 05/03/2018 20:13

Yes

MsMartini · 05/03/2018 20:14

Aye. Aye. Aye

2rebecca · 05/03/2018 20:14

I'd be happy with people who had had m to f genital surgery in women's prisons and refuges, but not women's sports. I do think chromosomes are important for sports as the XY physiology is different even on blockers.

SexMatters · 05/03/2018 20:14

I think the current guidelines are that a unisex facility should be completely enclosed with a sink inside.
