Have seen two totally irrelevant threads on the board. Both regarding babies. I wonder if someone is trying to remind us of our proper function. The only purpose I can think of is to drive 'proper ' threads down the board. I have reported the threads suggesting that they are moved to chat but not commented as I don't want to bump them. Suggest this might be a good way to deal if we get lots of these.

The fact remains, no one, but no one has come up with any arguements apart from "i just don't like trans people".

Having spent a considerable amount of time writing replies to your questions and comments on the sports thread, I am hurt that this is how you choose to characterise what I said, especially as I neither said those words, nor implied them. And if you don’t mean me in your comment, then you are being unreasonable to claim that no one has come up with anything. As it is, a fair amount of people have talked to you in a rational manner, and cited all sorts of examples both scientific and anecdotal.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 13/02/2018 13:47

I agree OP that sealions can provide really brilliant opportunities to pose and clarify our arguments. But it's a tricky balancing act because there's usually a point of no return on a sealioned thread where the argument has been gradually derailed and everyone is arguing passionately about points so abstruse that the debate becomes very hard to follow and rather offputting. Or it turns into a dogpile of exasperated posters.

We need some way of saying OK this is getting silly now. Or something.

AngryAttackKittens · 13/02/2018 13:48

The above is why I lean towards don't bother engaging with the sealions. People spend a lot of time and emotional energy on it and it can be draining and frustrating. That energy could be put to better use engaging with people who aren't just here to sealion and the person engaging with the non-sealion would feel happier afterwards.

It's like a vampire, don't invite them into your house (unless you have the sort of personality where treating them like a cat toy is amusing for you, in which case have at it).

One of the things that caused me to peak trans was seeing how incredibly weak most TRA arguments are, how the posters melt away when asked for anything concrete (woo hoo carrierwaveonly how's that diagram coming along?). So on the whole I think these threads are generally counter productive for the people that start them. After all they are the proponents of #nodebate and we debate everything

Can I also quickly high five MNHQ. The threads I reported have gone from this board. They've gone from a pretty shaky start a couple of years ago (Spartacus ) to providing a unique place for us to have these debates. I know we're their product and they make money from us but I still really appreciate it.

Yes I'll high five MNHQ with you. I know TSSDNCOP but I would be very interested in what made them peak trans change their editorial stance to allow debate.

ownterrain · 13/02/2018 16:11

Is it any wonder people don't stick around though? Whenever anyone offers a point of view that doesn't fit neatly in the accepted MN cannon everyone piles in with so much vitriol it must be quite an uphill struggle.

ownterrain I will give you that sometimes comments aren't as respectful as I'd like. However I think the 'pile on' is just a function of how many people here are gender critical and how desperate they are to debate in a way that doesn't happen on twitter. I genuinely want to know why someone thinks men who identify as women are women, what definitions they're using, have they considered specific cases like prison? Please, someone come and lucidly explain it to me!

[figurative kaboom]

Nice.

hipsterfun · 13/02/2018 17:21

Apologies if that hit the freshly iced cake.

HairyBallTheorem · 13/02/2018 17:26

hipster the patriarchy busting cannon lives in the feminist pub (along with a goat). It's a long story...

hipsterfun · 13/02/2018 17:29
