''100 years on since the first women got the vote, there are still inequalities in the feminist movement. Why are some feminists still failing transwomen?

The evidence is there if you look for it – Transphobic leaflets being given out in the safe zone at Labour annual conference; prominent party feminists suggesting violence against transwomen; someone being kicked out of a Labour Women’s Network party for harassing a teenage trans woman; fundraisers being started to try and legally challenge Labours trans-inclusive policies; transwomen being excluded from Labour run women’s events by a women’s officer. The list goes on.

Most state their actions aren’t transphobic at all, but they are merely seeking the protection of women’s spaces. Some go further, suggesting transwomen are men’s right activists working purposely to erode women’s hard won protects. They commonly misgender people like me as a means to belittle our experiences and score social media points. And so I think its fair we question how much authority they have as cis-women to decide whether they are being transphobic.''

It continues in this vein.

@AngryAttackKittens, how very dare you? Trans short people are short people!!! Grin

AngryAttackKittens · 02/02/2018 20:55

I've never felt short, being seen as short just never felt right to me, I've known from a young age that I was meant to be a tall person and it's not my fault that I'm trapped in a short person's body. How very dare the NBA refuse to offer me a spot on one of their teams?

PracticallyTerfectInEveryWay · 02/02/2018 21:20

Don't say short! It's heightist and literal violence. Vertically challenged please.

OvaHere · 02/02/2018 21:27

I'm trans tall too. It's literal violence when I can't get a glass from the top shelf. I demand all kitchen units everywhere are built no higher than 4ft so I can live an authentic life.

NataliaOsipova · 02/02/2018 21:28

The problem is that, seeing as we're not white men, people will think it's cute at best or just simply insane.

Not necessarily. Because it would appeal to white men. At the risk of hugely overestimating myself, it'd be a fucking amusing documentary to go round an old people's home and ask a load of old men if they'd be happy to have me in there with them for company.

The force behind Labour isn't Corbyn. He's a populist and a puppet. MCDonnell is the clever one. He understands economics. He's a genuine left winger who actually understands the system. You need to put it straight back at them on their own terms. Say I'm right and you can make the same argument - on their terms - with regard to age. Then they're fucked. Because, as with case law, this sort of thing sets a precedent. At the moment white men think "oh it's a load of weirdos vs a load of women". Put it right back at them in terms they might actually understand (i.e. a potential threat to the economy, given that the whole pensions system is a Ponzi scheme....)? I'm not so sure you dismiss it that easily.

OvaHere · 02/02/2018 21:29

Actually I might be slightly serious about the units Grin

AngryAttackKittens · 02/02/2018 22:16

The bars or straps you hang on to on buses if you have to stand should also be moved to a lower height to accommodate the trans tall.

BossyBitch · 02/02/2018 22:53

It's literal violence when I can't get a glass from the top shelf.

You know what's literal violence? Measuring units! Trans tall people everywhere are quite literally oppressed by the foot and its equally transphobic little brother, the inch! Angry

OvaHere · 02/02/2018 23:00

We can change that BossyBitch. I mean there's no real reason that we count upwards is there? It's just a social construct. It's reasonable for the sake of inclusiveness to trans tall people that we count downwards. So really 6ft is pretty short compared to 5ft. Think about it.

Traffig · 02/02/2018 23:44

This is so true @Natalia.
I remember the horror in one trades union, decades ago now, when introducing a BAME section. Certain white NI members demanded representation with the section ....because they deemed themselves to be a "minority".

That's why saying "Women don't have dicks" might seem shocking to some ... but your average straight voter won't disagree. Everyone knows that women don't have dicks. Explain from that starting point and it becomes WTF?
It's not about hating people who genuinely want to transition. It's not even about raising awareness amongst "the Rash"... although they should be constantly challenged. It's the wider population who need to be made aware of what this form of "self identification" could mean for them and theirs.

Well, I commented on that article. I'm not on Twitter but I can do that much at least.

StoneColdDiva · 03/02/2018 00:33

The irony is that #transwomen are women and to deny this is literal violence and yet whenever transformer are given a platform in The Independent or The Guardian, they cannot help themselves from talking exclusively about trans issues, never women's issues. Wonder why that is!

BitterLittlePoster · 03/02/2018 02:15

It's literal violence when I can't get a glass from the top shelf.

Oh please, try being trans short. People Misheight me all the time in the grocery store. They should be asking me whether I identify as someone who can reach the top shelf. Bigots

Elendon · 04/02/2018 09:20

The latest update from Jenifer James on GoFundMe is interesting. It's regarding a letter to the independent regarding LM's article by a transwomen who supports Jenifer James.

Collidascope · 04/02/2018 09:31

The letter:
Dear Sir,
On Thursday, Lily Madigan wrote about her experience in the Labour Party and her opposition to Jennifer James’ campaign to protect female representation in the party.
I’m also a member of the Labour Party and I also happen to be a trans woman, though that is unimportant when I am campaigning with my local party to re-elect our Labour councillor.
I know that I’m not really a woman. Women are female and I am male, but that matters little in my day-to-day life. The law lets me change my legal sex, society respects the credibility of the process and I am accepted for who I am.
Tragically, the campaign for self-identification risks all that as it spawns doubt and confusion: if anyone can self-identify as a woman, what does the word woman even mean? In this strange post-modern world, self-ID cuts straight across the rights of women to organise and associate as a sex.
Transgender campaigners tell me that men would not self-identify as women just to access All Women Shortlists (AWS). I’m not convinced, especially if they want to see AWS brought into disrepute so they can abolish them. The result: those men get what they want, women lose, and trans people get the blame.
I’ve therefore given my money to Jennifer’s campaign. We must keep AWS to protect the representation of women. Trans people do need to be represented, but not at women’s expense.
But sadly, in a vicious environment where men and their trans allies conspire in a secret Facebook group to force women from the party, I must remain anonymous. My solidarity, however, is total.

Collidascope · 04/02/2018 09:32

Thanks, elendon. I bet they don't publish it, it doesn't fit their agenda.

Elendon · 04/02/2018 09:36

Well then it's not Independent. It has to publish it. Otherwise it's a newspaper that enshrines no debate.

Elendon · 04/02/2018 09:38

And I will say this again. I know one of those Labour Councillors who support Lily and self id for AWS. They have been openly critical of AWS in the past.

LapdanceShoeshine · 04/02/2018 13:24

Newspapers never publish every letter they’re sent (except desperate local papers, probably). Though the Indie doesn’t print any more, does it, so no space constraints.

It’ll be interesting to see if this one appears...

OlennasWimple · 05/02/2018 12:22

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

LM "supports the call for all BAME shortlists"! Might be worth joining twitter just to ask whether self-identified BAME people are eligible for inclusion on those Grin

BossyBitch · 05/02/2018 12:31

You really couldn't make it up!

I'm now totally running as a trans male Asian Muslim OAP. In this capacity I'm also demanding my pension! Why don't they pay me my pension???

CrustyCob · 05/02/2018 13:31

I refuse to suffer an attack of the vapours.

MyOtherProfile · 05/02/2018 17:05

Oh please do!
And I have to laugh at the ad that keeps coming up on this thread!

"and seek to present me in an unfair light, often pushing lies as fact and allowing me no comment - the real no-platforming"

Lily wrote that (can't be arsed to suffer through reading the article)? Interesting, Trump tactics to the core, do something and accuse your opponents of it. Lily both pushes lies and tries to no-platform opponents.

Fekko · 05/02/2018 18:39

No comment? Just try shutting him up!
