The backstory:

I noticed as you do that a post came up on my Facebook newsfeed for whatever reason the algorithm decided I might be interested in such a post. I decided to ask a question, please feel free to let me know your views, personally I came to the conclusion that with this level of non critical thinking or non thinking we may as well give up as a species:

But in the year ending in march 2017 on average 6.6 women a week were murdered in domestic homicides in England and Wales.

swerfy is that true?!

Six women! I thought it was two women a week. Has it gone up? What the fuck.

SwerfyTerfy · 28/01/2018 08:20

Datun
True, I'm afraid. My source for that is the ONS but I'll try to find the specific page.
The exact number of women murdered (in domestic homicides) was 319 (for the year) which is 6.6. (319 divided by 12 divided by 4)

I just did the maths, before I read this! Dividing 319 x 52. Yes, 6.1.

Bloody hell. That's nearly a 3 fold increase.

Either something is not adding up, or something horrific is happening.

SwerfyTerfy · 28/01/2018 08:24

Sorry, I'm a twat.
I forgot that some months have more than 4 weeks in them, so it is 6.1. Still, no less horrifying Sad

SwerfyTerfy · 28/01/2018 08:31

Full explanation of the statistic here.

The poster called Toby who leapt in to support "Natalie" is "her" partner. Toby is a woman who calls herself a transman.

VivaLeBeaver · 28/01/2018 08:41

This is why I firstly have a different name on fb to my actual name.....so they can’t email my employer, etc.

I also try and keep Trans debating to twitter which is even more secret squirrel than my fb account. On fb they could still go through my friends list I guess and message them about me, people would laugh and not be bothered but I don’t want my friends dragged into a load of shit.

Datun · 28/01/2018 08:44

Bloody hell SwerfyTerfy

I'm utterly shocked. How come this isn't being reported?

LangCleg · 28/01/2018 09:58

That can't be right.

There won't be more than 619 murders in England and Wales IN TOTAL. It's usually about 500. Going to check...

LangCleg · 28/01/2018 10:05

Ok, from this bulletin:

www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/bulletins/crimeinenglandandwales/yearendingseptember2017

So for the 12 months up to September 2017.

685 homicides in total, which includes the large numbers from the terrorist attacks in London and Manchester (about 50).

Generally speaking, about two thirds of homicide victims are men:

www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/compendium/focusonviolentcrimeandsexualoffences/yearendingmarch2015/chapter2homicide

So we are probably still looking at the usual roughly 200 female domestic murder victims per year.

Karen Ingala Smith has found details of 138 cases in 2017, and she is usually pretty accurate:

MargaretRiver · 28/01/2018 10:17

Does Domestic Homicides include Manslaughter, etc , as well as crimes successfully prosecuted as murder?

ShineyNewName99 · 29/01/2018 20:50

Derailed?
