Very worrying.

Wish they would stop bringing up "trans rights"

What rights don't they have for heaven's sake.

Why is ‘gender’ the category rather than sex? I agree that people should be able to present with whatever degree of femininity or masculinity they feel and be accepted but WTF has that got to do with sex?

As the product of a traditionally Labour family with multiple trade unionist members I never thought I'd say this, but if Labour make this the hill they choose to die on then they deserve to lose the next election over it. Preferably by a large enough margin that the point that they can't win without the support of women is really, really clear.

Looking on the bright side, if this is the approach the party is going to formalise, it provides a clear policy statement which can be tested in the courts. I increasingly think ot will be test cases that will hammer out the boundaries between the conflicting rights of women (sex) and transwomen (gender).

And whichever way the NEC goes, the losing side will challenge the decision.

The legal fund will now be spent contesting one member's suspension according to the latest update. I don't know what they've been suspended for as the update didn't say and cannot tweet at the organiser without outing. I think the legal challenge to aws being opened to self iding males is more important and think it would be a shame if the fund was spent on one person but am not going to ask for a refund.

Well I won't be voting Labour if this is their policy, I won't vote Tory either as I don't agree with their policies.

There is no party I feel I can vote for which takes women's rights seriously. Feeling very disenfranchised. Perhaps it needs a mass strike of all women like they did in Iceland...

I just don’t see stand why this has become such a huge thing for the Labour Party. It’s as if it’s The Most Important Thing Ever - above child poverty, housing, unemployment, education, homelessness... you know, actual real issues that a lot of people are struggling with?

I do agree with this, but presumably contesting the suspension wouldn't just be about protecting one person but would also contest the idea that gender-critical views are a disciplinary matter within the Labour Party.

This needs to be contested - and the money donated needs to be used for this - and legal assistance for those who are being harassed if available. But the main and original aim needs to be the focus.

Gender is the means of female oppression. Labour should be working to minimize gender not enshrine it.

Hmm. I think the money should be spent challenging the AWS decision, personally. It has far wider implications, eg scholarships, representation on boards etc.

Maybe we need all the gender critical men to sign up for the AWS now. There must be enough of them to make an impact.

I'm a bit worried that's the long-term aim. Then they say sadly 'oh look, aws are unworkable without either bigotry or breaching equality law, we can't have them after all' and that's the end of that. A lefty way to ban aws? Tick.

I don't see much future for women in the Labour party really. I cancelled my DD last week.

But we don't know exactly what the suspended person did or the reason for suspension. It could end up with arguments about what constitutes harrassment eg if the suspended member has been emailing one person in particular a lot or encouraging others to do so. Nobody else has been suspended so this is about whether one person crossed the line. That's not going to be nearly as useful as a legal opinion on self id generally.

If funds are needed to fight a separate legal case about suspension from the party, start a separate Go Fund Me appeal - I am sure many of the folk who donated to the AWS appeal would donate to both.
