AIBU GoFundMe addiction

I've recently become addicted to a Gofundme campaign. Every time I press refresh the total raised has jumped up and I don't seem to be able to stop.

I'm trying to stay within Mumsnet rules here, so obviously I can't link or promote it.

Does anyone else have this enjoyable problem?

What's the legal position when donating in another's name? Is it allowed?

Interesting you should ask that, Morris. Someone has just donated a fiver in Lily Madigan's name! (Wasn't me, before anyone asks). Was this (a) Lily suffering a fit of confusion; (b) someone doing a "Mike Pence donates to planned parenthood"; (c) Lily wanting to get her email onto any mailing lists to discuss strategy?

I can't afford to donate but I damn well will share it and promote it where I can!

In most cases, as long as it isn't with intent to commit fraud, I think it's OK to use any name you like - as they say on the name boards, no-one owns a name.

I read on Lily Madigan's page that gofundme have emailed Rebecca James to let her know the campaign is under investigation

If they shut this down I think I will explode with rage.

If they shut it down they will have to return everyone’s donations which will presumably be a massive faff? So hopefully on that basis alone they (gofundme) won’t! Worst case scenario is it’s shut down and we all just give to the organisers directly. They can’t stop us supporting this however much they tantrum.

I don't understand why the TRAs want to shut this down. If they're so sure they're 'on the right side of history' you'd think they'd want to allow the legal challenge to go ahead, and for us to lose? It would strengthen their position.

In any case, I can't see any grounds for shutting it down. It's raising money for legal action against an organisation, and there's no hate speech or anything illegal in the wording.

Have a quick read through LM's twitter feed. It boils down to transwomen are women, and sorrowful 'why all the hate?', because considering the needs of actual biological women and their oppression is just so mean when there are transwomen they should be validating and getting out of the way of.

And as usual, 'hate' translates as 'persistently stating facts'.

LM is stating that they've used the Equality Act twice in court and won.
