AIBU GoFundMe addiction

DistaffSide · 13/01/2018 12:29

I've recently become addicted to a Gofundme campaign. Every time I press refresh the total raised has jumped up and I don't seem to be able to stop.

I'm trying to stay within Mumsnet rules here, so obviously I can't link or promote it.

Does anyone else have this enjoyable problem?

Donated.

To be fair to MNHQ, I think there’s a blanket policy of no GoFundMe links rather than anything against this specific campaign.

BatShite · 13/01/2018 17:24

And like fuck is the campaign transphobic. Caring about the rights of women (the ones with vaginas) is not transphobic. I will be very pissed off if they remove it.

BeeInMyBonnet1985 · 13/01/2018 17:26

I've been discreetly following the gofundme page all day - it's so addictive watching the funds shooting up! My mum is the most apolitical person that I know, but even she chipped in a few bob when I told her what was happening. It's beautiful to watch women rising in solidarity like this.

I'm unsurprised that the transactivists are trying to silence the campaign already, but the genie is well and truly out of the bottle now, whatever they do...

From their message, it seems that people have set up gofundme things for themselves then asked for donations. I understand why this would be banned. But this is completely different to something like that. Its a huge important issue and I think even a 'blanket ban' should make exceptions for something like this tbh. Should really be a case to case basis.

If it's transphobic, so are any prostate/ovarian/testicular/cervical cancer campaigns. Biology isn't transphobic.

Why couldn’t they just delete or disable the link in my original thread ?
But anyhow - YAY ! 😍
Jennifer is fearless and a Labour insider, unwilling to backdown in the face of disciplinaries even. Labour needs women like her and Ann far more than they need deluded teenagers, it’s good to see Womens officers from other CLP groups donating too.

It is strangely pleasing pressing the refresh button. Was on 3.6K when I went out earlier, has now smashed the 5K barrier.

I've just donated a bit more because at the moment I can finally afford to, because I got some back pay from my equal pay claim. A claim which was only possible because at the moment "woman" means something when it comes to collecting statistical data, and forcing employers to release payroll data - so I was in a position to show I was being paid less than male colleagues. In future, I guess that may not be possible.

It's been a tough few years for me, watching food and utilities bills get away from my salary and dipping into savings every other month. Now I can finally replenish the savings I've spent on living expenses, and look forward to a modest pay rise for the first time in years, bringing me into line with my male colleagues. We have to be able to point out that 47 years after the equal pay act, women, as in cunty women, are still routinely paid less in this country than men of the bepenised variety. Without the word woman meaning something, not only can we not name our oppression, we can't fight against it.

BatShite · 13/01/2018 17:32

This person will receive your donation directly.
All payments are final and cannot be refunded.

It says when I went to donate. So even if they shut it down, the money has already gone to the cause. And it can just be set up again and again I assume. SO them shutting it down will not help at all. Is this right? i bloody well hope so Grin

Shared this on my facebook and immediately got some knobhead saying 'female only shortlists are sexist against men' and such. Cannot be arsed to argue with him.

DistaffSide · 13/01/2018 17:48

Bela thanks for your thread.

Batshite I'm hoping that's the case, that donations are gone.

It is strangely pleasing pressing the refresh button., another one lost Prickly Smile

Donated. Thanks OP.

Icantreachthepretzels · 13/01/2018 17:51

just donated - I really want labour to change their minds on all this nonsense as we are in far too precarious a political situation to have the opposition lose their female voters.
We need to get the tories out if the nhs isn't going to collapse, austerity isn't going to kill more thousands of vulnerable people and brexit isn't going to destroy everything. But labour cannot achieve victory if they alienate the 51% of voters in order to appease the 0.1%.
There is so much more at stake right now than peoples gender feelings - and labour need to start reflecting that.
Will be wonderful if it is women that manage to save the day, along with themselves in the process.

CantStandMeow · 13/01/2018 18:04

Thank you for this thread. I've donated and shared on my Facebook.

It's a very heartening thing seeing the amount raised increasing.

Thanks to all who have been so vocal about this issue... even to their own detriment.

Really want labour to change their minds on this. I have always voted labour but now feeling politically homeless.

GuardianLions · 13/01/2018 18:28

I think the highest donation is from a bloke - it is twice the next highest - so I think there are men who feel passionately about it too.

ATeardropExplodes · 13/01/2018 18:31

Top two are from men. Or transmen of course. Who knows.

ATeardropExplodes · 13/01/2018 18:31

Gender, I just put my initials in.

I really wish I was in a position to match these hundred quid donations. Best I can do is probably 20, and not til Tuesday. Though have done a fiver today.

DH has shared it too. Same knobhead said the same on his and just got a 'fuck off, idiot' from my husband Grin Wish I could be so straightforward.

GuardianLions · 13/01/2018 18:49

wow its £5926!

SweetGrapes · 13/01/2018 18:58

Awesome, isn't it!! People are putting in good money!

DarkPeakScouter · 13/01/2018 19:04

Batshite why can’t you?

irretating · 13/01/2018 19:13

Over £6000.
