I've recently become addicted to a Gofundme campaign. Every time I press refresh the total raised has jumped up and I don't seem to be able to stop.

I'm trying to stay within Mumsnet rules here, so obviously I can't link or promote it.

Does anyone else have this enjoyable problem?

Funnily enough I gave to this, and have given to women's aid, various homeless charities, regularly donate to foodbanks... We women with our ability to multi-task, eh? (Sarcasm, btw!) Just small amounts in every case, because I'm not exactly loaded (take home is below national median wage, but I do what I can). I totally agree that what's so heartening is the sheer number of women (and some men - that's what I call being an aly) giving what they can.

(On a side note, I wonder how many of the "transwomen are women, 4 legs good, 2 legs better" bleaters in the comments gave to the "taxis for Travis" gofundme?)

BeeInMyBonnet1985 · 15/01/2018 17:00

As someone who actually DOES volunteer for my local food bank (which is almost 100% run by women, in fact) I find that I can gasp care about more than one issue at a time! And support whatever campaign I feel like without answering to strangers on the Internet! Shocking, I know...

Honestly, I would love to know how many of those trans allies concern-trolling the legal fund page actually do ANY volunteer work of their own. Because my local hospice/homeless shelter/soup kitchen isn't exactly being over run by young hip libfems looking to donate their time, funnily enough.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/01/2018 17:11

That's part of it. The social programs where I live, whether homelessness, addiction, MH, healthcare, poverty advocates, are all mainly staffed and volunteered by women. 'Cis' women. Including those services for men. We already ARE doing most of the caring/working.

But we're still not allowed to spend our spare time and money protecting our rights.

PricklyBall · 15/01/2018 17:16

The other thing I'd like to know about the concern trolls is this. At a guess (since many of them tell us they are labour party members) they probably oppose a range of issues - Universal Credit, Brexit,, etc. I'd be fascinated to know whether they put as much time, effort and vitriol into concern trolling fund raisers for the Tory party or for the leave campaign. I can't help but think about that brilliant blog post on "what about the men?" derailing written by a woman who runs a charity for men's mental health, and also campaigns for women's causes. It's a fascinating insight because her work for women (less than half her time) is continually trolled by "what aboutery" and downright abusive texts, yet she reports that this has never happened in the case of her work for men -no one has ever said "what about the women?"

I get the distinct impression that it's only women's issues that produce this level of silence. Brexit, Universal Credit, the rise of Momentum - all things that get very heated reactions, very strong for or against feelings. But not outright "we must silence the witch with the ducking stool" responses.

Evidently not many, given that they haven't met target!

ftw · 15/01/2018 17:22

I’ve been somewhat agog at the commenters saying things like ‘so by your own arguments trans men would be allowed on AWS’.

Well, duh, ye-es.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 15/01/2018 17:23

I'm quite enjoying the comments on the site. They are seething because women have the temerity to loo after their own interests.

Amused and bemused

stitchglitched · 15/01/2018 17:25

What is 'taxis for Travis' please? Is there really a fundraiser for taxi fares?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/01/2018 17:27

Yup...

"Trans women, trans feminine, and feminine gender non-conforming people are often targeted in public for harassment and death threats.

This can make it impossible for many to find work or attend work as well as have a social life. Due to the harassment on public transport, many may spend what they can on taxis or avoid going out completely. At present, Action for Trans Health offers grants to trans and gender variant people to access healthcare and some of this can include travel costs to Gender Identity Clinics, but we want to do more.

This bursary will provide an opportunity for trans women and trans feminine gender non-conforming people to live their lives. Even a small bursary could provide travel assistance for a night out or even emergency assistance in a crisis.

It's important for people within the LGBT community and who are supportive of the LGBT community as a whole to not only recognise that trans women and gender non-conforming people face a huge proportion of the violence and murder targeted at our community worldwide, but also that we do more than mourning the loss of trans people on Transgender Day of Remembrance.

We should also provide the means for trans women and trans feminine gender non-conforming people to live.

This bursary is a small step, but it's a step we can take."

ftw · 15/01/2018 17:27

stitch, yep. Because sharing public spaces with men is not safe.

stitchglitched · 15/01/2018 17:41

Thanks for the info. And these are the same individuals claiming that fundraising about the representation of women in politics is a frivolous waste of money!

BeyondWW · 15/01/2018 17:42

Thehairthebod · 15/01/2018 17:43

The taxi fundraiser thing hasn't raised much funnily enough.

ftw · 15/01/2018 17:43

They’ll be giving it all to the food banks and refuges I imagine.

stitchglitched · 15/01/2018 17:47

So if transwomen are women are they also providing money for biological women to take taxis is it ok for them to differentiate?

BeeInMyBonnet1985 · 15/01/2018 17:53

Fundraising to give 'trans feminine' free taxi fares didn't achieve target? Jeez, you don't say. What a tragedy. I, as a lowly cunty woman, wouldn't know what it's like to be harassed on public transport, of course Hmm

Look, I'm not going to tell people not to donate for a trans taxi fund. I think it's stupid (and perfectly illustrative of how they have NO IDEA about how women navigate the world) but whatever, it's their money, right? But its facinating how differently women and transwomen approach to crowdfunding campaigns. Transwomen's crowdfunding pages are often (mostly?) for the benefit of individuals (money for rent, cosmetic surgery etc) whereas women tend to crowdfund for community interests. There's nothing stopping them from crowdfunding for a legal defence of self-ID, of course, but I suspect that it's simply easier to harass women for daring to donate their money to a cause that didn't meet TA approval.

HarryHarlow · 15/01/2018 18:01

I've just donated

Her0utdoors · 15/01/2018 18:06

Donated. Wouldn't have even know about it if someone on a local Facebook page hasn't written a post telling us not to ( and sign something else instead). 😁

MeganChips · 15/01/2018 18:11

Thank you all for spreading the word on this. I’ve donated using my full name. I avidly read the Feminism boards but don’t tend to post much as everyone else says it so much more articulately than I do but I reached peak trans a long time ago.

I was ranting to DH about the whole issue yesterday and was overheard by my 11 year old DS. He listened for a while then said “But how is that fair? Why should girls have to give up their places and boys don’t?”

Quite.

SophoclesTheFox · 15/01/2018 18:47

Your 11 year old is a smart cookie, megan. Literally, a child can understand what's wrong headed about the idea! And yet, it eludes many otherwise intelligent adults. It boggles me.

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 15/01/2018 18:56

Thanks so much for this thread. I'd never have known about the campaign otherwise. Now it has my spare cash for the week.

All the best people are blocked by this lot. I check their stuff on my backup Twitter account.
