"Look how far we have come" says Paris Lees in a feature celebrating 100 years since women have had the right to vote in the UK.

Em except - your sex have always had the right to vote.

Or am I missing something?

it goes hand in hand with it bored. A society which tells women they are worthless ends up with a society where women believe that and internalise it and criticise themselves relentlessly for it. No wonder they acquiesce.

bambambini · 05/01/2018 15:36

Had a look at Lees Twitter feed sbout this and they have a huge amount of support, hardly any criticism at all.

bambambini · 05/01/2018 15:41

I think many women, especially young women are people pleasers, want to be seen as lovely and tolerant (no bad thing) - i also think there’s an element of being flattered that MEN actually want to be a woman.

One good thing about getting older is that you know longer care so much what people think of you, whether you are popular or not. It’s quite liberating.

Boredofwinternow · 05/01/2018 15:42

I saw that bambambini. I understand that Paris's followers want to support him, and it gives me absolutely no pleasure to single out anyone for criticism. But if you're going to claim to be a woman and have the absolute fucking gall to appropriate women's history and centre yourself in something that had nothing to do with you, you must be prepared to answer your critics when they question the harm your actions are doing.

Boredofwinternow · 05/01/2018 15:42

It definitely is younger women. As you say, older women can see the misogyny and aren't prepared to fawn over someone like Paris.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 05/01/2018 15:44

At this rate there will be a transgender male in the Whitehouse before there is a woman

Datun · 05/01/2018 15:47

Lees blocks anyone who questions his supremacy. That's why there is no dissent on his feed.

YourVagesty · 05/01/2018 15:50

Agreed thermostatpolice - I compare all of this to Dolezal too

Boredofwinternow · 05/01/2018 15:52

I agree Assigned, women are just going to become more of a minority. I didn't know Lees blocks people, that explains a lot.

DeleteOrDecay · 05/01/2018 16:07

I honestly don’t see the difference between this, and me donning blackface and turning up at an event to celebrate black people getting the vote and centering myself in it.

Yes, exactly! There's no difference! For some reason sexism is one of the more acceptable -ism's. The Poundland elf advert fiasco proves that. People think sexism is funny.

It definitely is younger women. As you say, older women can see the misogyny and aren't prepared to fawn over someone like Paris.

I am mid-20s so not that old (I don't think?) but I tend to agree. It's only because of mumsnet that my eyes have been opened (and is also the reason I moved on from libfem to RadFem).

EamonnWright · 05/01/2018 16:13

This is the outworking of the intersectional stuff. It's like a points system. I remember one of the BLM guys posted on Twitter that he's looking forward to St Patrick's day as there are a lot of drunk white women about. He got a pass of course because he's black and apparently can't be racist. Never really seen an explanation for the predatory rapey part right enough, he maybe had enough points to get a pass for that too.

And we all know Transgenders are among the most oppressed so they can do anything and their oppression points will see them right.

I hit peak intersectional after watching a video of a black woman talking about how oppressed she Is, from her class in Harvard that costs her parents about 50k a term.

I wish I was that oppressed here in sunny Belfast.

speakout · 05/01/2018 16:29

So much sense talked about on this site.

The only one who I can talk to in RL about this is my 20 yo son, who totally gets it.
My friends thinks I am being hateful.

I know many cis women who look like Danielle Muscato (reasons for which vary

No you don't. And please drpp the "cis"

DeleteOrDecay · 05/01/2018 16:38

My dp gets it, we had another discussion earlier on actually after I saw this thread. I don't think he understood the implications for women & girls until I explained it to him but he was of the opinion that you can't 'feel' like any sex. You are what you are and what you like doesn't influence your sex.

I have a friend who thinks 'changing sex' is ridiculous and impossible but haven't had chance to discuss properly with her to see how far she goes with that.

Apart from that it hasn't come up with anyone else. It's a shame it's become a taboo subject, mainly because people don't want to be shut down and labelled a bigot.

Ereshkigal · 05/01/2018 16:39

It's great to see younger women like you seeing this for what it is, Delete.

UpABitLate · 05/01/2018 17:12

"Its why Serena Williams is accused of 'really being a man' by people who are racist. (And transphobic)."

Notice:
Slagging off Serena Williams for how she looks is not SEXIST but TRANSPHOBIC.

Not only must women be erased, but in a fantastic patriarchal reversal, when anything bad does happen to us, really it's an issue not for women but for trans people. Somehow.

Also notice: The people who are incredibly horrible about her looks are mainly MEN. Men are the ones who think that saying a woman looks like a man, saying "I don't fancy hers much" is the ultimate insult to a woman because obviously the only purpose to our lives is to look fuckable for the boys.

Interestingly men are nastiest to women they feel threatened by - Serena is an incredible sportswoman - so strong, winning everything she looks at, enormously successful, massive wealth. And shocker she's black, yep insecure little man-boys hate her alright.

The same insecure little man boys would be very very very happy to see Serena get beaten by a TIM, I'd put money on it.

Personally I think she's awesome and I hope that she continues being able to do exactly what she wants and now with a baby as well Smile

(Is it transphobic to mention that she had a baby?)

"I hit peak intersectional after watching a video of a black woman talking about how oppressed she Is, from her class in Harvard that costs her parents about 50k a term."
Thing is, I get that I have more privilege even than her, by virtue of my skin. The police in the US will stop her over me to check her licence if she is driving. I GET that. I GET that transgender people are vulnerable. I get that they are vulnerable in ways I will never understand, and I'm glad I have never felt a (strong) urge to identify out of my gender. But that men WON'T get that being a natal woman (I hate that fucking phrase) is a vulnerable position FULL STOP is what irks me and shows me this is just misogyny. They cannot ask men to open their spaces to transmen because transmen know that they might be in danger. So it's up to us to fix the fucking patriarchy yet again by minimising our needs.

IrkThePurist · 05/01/2018 17:19

Has anyone mentioned Paris Lees on trans prisoners including Ian Huntley?

inews.co.uk/opinion/paris-lees-transgender-prisoners-isnt-time-talked-facts/

''As is the Guardian columnist Hadley Freeman, who used the story as an excuse to ask the question: “Should a man with a history of crimes against women and girls really be in a female prison?” in her column last weekend. It was the latest instalment of Middle Class White Women Find 101 Rude and Unnecessary Ways to Tell Trans Women We’re Not Real Women. Have you been following it? It’s all terribly riveting stuff.''

MargeryFenworthy · 05/01/2018 17:19

It's utterly ludicrous. A man celebrating womanhood. How dare he. This whole thing has gone way too far.

AbsintheFriends · 05/01/2018 17:23

I wanted to post (first post with recent new year name change!) just to gain comfort from solidarity - hope that's OK, though I have nothing new or insightful to add. I'm feeling particularly bruised and sensitive and beaten by it all just now because over Christmas a huge row blew up out of nowhere (or CBB, which amounts to the same thing) between me and my two teenage daughters. I actually couldn't believe how blindly they've swallowed all the gaslighting fact-denial, and kept trying to point out where all this is leading and the poisonous misogyny behind it, but the chasm between us opened up over 'transwomen are not women' and couldn't be bridged. I am now, in their eyes, a hateful old bigot (because apparently ageism is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.) Thank god my dh was totally on my side, but still, it bloody hurts. (Also, thank god for this board.)

IrkThePurist · 05/01/2018 17:28

AbsintheFriends Flowers
We can only hope that one day they realise what you are talking about, without having to have their own safety compromised to reach that point.

speakout · 05/01/2018 17:33

AbsintheFriends I sympathise.

While I have not had an argument with my 17 yo daughter over the issue I know she would see me as an old bigot if I put forward my view.
I did discuss very briefly the vogue article with her today, and she immediately came to the defence of Paris Lees, immediately "correcting" my use of the pronoun "he" I dropped the conversation before we came to conflict.

It's not worth family strife arguing about such things.

My 20 yo son is more enlightened.
He is of the view that if men want to dress like " cheap nightclub hostesses" then they should be braver about it- and their reasons for doing so.

But do you look like Danielle Muscato? Because you could have just said 'ACTUALLY I'm a TIM' and they'd have put you on the cover grin

No, but I’ve started sprouting weird chin hairs so it’s altogether possible.😁

I didn’t catch the name of the women on Sky news who was criticising this photo, but she was very pissed of at the ‘calibre’ of the women involved.
