as many have expressed dismay at the events unfolding we are creating our response to the letter passed around. The letter will be available to share in a document with signatures including representatives of many of the women's groups pushing for consultation. If anybody wishes to have their name / position held added to the document please PM me. If you just wish to add your support, just comment here and keep it going.

In sisterhood

We are ordinary women, some of us Labour Party members, the rest of us potential Labour Party voters. We know that sexism and sexist messages received from birth mean we are less likely to push ourselves forward, to be listened to, to take the lead and have belief in our abilities, especially in a male-dominated sphere such as politics. Whatever our differences, this is an experience that unites women in society and is exactly why the Jo Cox Leadership programme is needed – to bolster self-esteem and confidence and work towards building a toolkit in preparation for political life.

The Labour Party and Labour Women’s Network, in association with the Jo Cox Foundation, have decided not to invoke Equality Act 2010 exemptions which would permit the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme to offer the programme to female participants only. We understand that graduates will feel a loyalty to the programme and its decisions. We hope they also feel a responsibility to reflect the diversity of women’s opinions in the party and wider society, and will use their leadership roles to ensure women are consulted about the things that affect us, whether Conservative Party proposals to review the Gender Recognition Act or Labour Party mechanisms to increase women's participation in political life.

He's been espousing on various matters since his wife's savage death at the hands of a deranged man and yet sadly silent on this

This is insensitive.

exLtEveDallas · 06/12/2017 07:52

Excellent letter Nettle, thank you.

Ex Labour Voter

Backingvocals · 06/12/2017 08:05

I don’t want to put this on Brendon Cox. He never asked for this role. He probably hasn’t thought about it and has just gone along with it because all the TRAs said it was orogressive. I can see also why he wouldn’t want to fight them even if he did get it. But the Labour Party as a whole should be ashamed of itself for its craven betrayal.

SeraphinaDombegh · 06/12/2017 08:13

I agree. Former Labour voter now increasingly disinclined to do so again.

I agree - Jane Roper

I don’t know, either you want to protect a person’s legacy or you don’t. When men are allowed on a women’s leadership programme that is a strong statement.

Sunkisses · 06/12/2017 09:46

It's been posted in the Morning Star now. Well done to @NettleTea

Babieseverywhere · 06/12/2017 10:14

I agree

Historykid · 06/12/2017 10:16

I agree. Where do I sign? I'm a Labour party member and am disgusted that someone who has threatened to leak women's data because they disagree, made rape & paedophilia jokes is now being hailed as a role model.

SirVixofVixHall · 06/12/2017 10:32

I agree. I voted Labour at the last election, but will never vote for them again unless they start looking after the rights of women and girls. A 19 year old man, who has made joking refs to rape and child abuse, and is now tweeting veiled, gloating threats about having access to women's data, as "women's officer"? It is a disgrace, the Labour party is a shambles. How is he still in post after that data comment? Just HOW? Misogyny.

Gwynnita · 06/12/2017 11:05

I agree. Labour party member.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 06/12/2017 11:44

Somebody has posted about the letter on the NEU facebook page - not happy.

I would loved to have signed but could not do so in my job.

Wtf is an ‘insipid form of abuse’? Did they mean insidious, do you think?

AstraiaLiberty · 06/12/2017 12:26

I'm an NEU member who signed the letter - just a regular member, not the one mentioned in the Facebook post - and I'd definitely try to find another union if they come out strongly in favour of the reality-denying transactivist position.

MiMi78 · 06/12/2017 12:38

Someone had the thesaurus open writing that response Grin
I can almost feel the pearl clutching.

MiMi78 · 06/12/2017 12:41

Apparently members need 'educating' aka brainwashing Hmm

GuardianLions · 06/12/2017 12:48

Argh the pomo speak bullshit. I know that Derren Brown has a way of hypnotising people into falling asleep by bombarding them with conflicting demands and then offering sleep as a way out for the brain.

The way that was written. "the most threatening and insipid form of abuse is perpetrated by a more endemic attitudinal approach"
What the fuck does that mean?

Lets break it down.. 'Abuse is perpetrated by'.... Okay I am waiting for the individual or individuals not abstract concepts who perpetrated....
"by a more endemic attitudinal approach" - do they mean 'commonly held belief'?

So abstract 'commonly held beliefs' divorced from people are capable of being perpetrators now.... Hmm What!?!
I'll attempt to go on...
"self-identify as the gender they believe themselves to be".... - why not just say 'self-identify'?

I can't even be bothered with reading this brain-aching tapestry of twaddle.

Disappear up your own backsides pomo twits why don't you?

Thelilywhite · 06/12/2017 12:50

great to see it published

Thelilywhite · 06/12/2017 12:51

The letter I mean! That facebook post is pathetic

GuardianLions · 06/12/2017 12:51

haha - I was going to say [grin}

GuardianLions · 06/12/2017 12:55

Yes- great to see the letter published though. It feels empowering to see it.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 06/12/2017 13:09

I consider myself fairly well educated. I cannot make much sense of the facebook post and the word spaghetti. They seem to be just using 'big' words to look more intelligent, without actually understanding what the words mean? Unless its actually me who does not understand the words, which is entirely possible I guess.

LangCleg · 06/12/2017 13:11

The infuriating thing is that I have absolutely no problem with the Jo Cox programme awards going to trans people. I just think that a programme set up to improve representation for women in politics should only be available to people without penises, since it's the penises who dominate politics.

Therefore, I think the Jo Cox programme should be open to women and trans men.

You will never see the transactivists advocate for these awards to go to trans men. Because they are not feminists. Because they are not advocates for the whole trans community. Because they are penis rights activists.

AstraiaLiberty · 06/12/2017 13:12

Does anyone know if the letter or any mention of it appears in today's print version of the Morning Star? Asking as if so I'd like to buy a copy to show support, despite not sharing their politics.
