A Spartacus letter re Jo Cox Leadership

NettleTea · 01/12/2017 12:33

as many have expressed dismay at the events unfolding we are creating our response to the letter passed around. The letter will be available to share in a document with signatures including representatives of many of the women's groups pushing for consultation. If anybody wishes to have their name / position held added to the document please PM me. If you just wish to add your support, just comment here and keep it going.

In sisterhood

We are ordinary women, some of us Labour Party members, the rest of us potential Labour Party voters. We know that sexism and sexist messages received from birth mean we are less likely to push ourselves forward, to be listened to, to take the lead and have belief in our abilities, especially in a male-dominated sphere such as politics. Whatever our differences, this is an experience that unites women in society and is exactly why the Jo Cox Leadership programme is needed – to bolster self-esteem and confidence and work towards building a toolkit in preparation for political life.

The Labour Party and Labour Women’s Network, in association with the Jo Cox Foundation, have decided not to invoke Equality Act 2010 exemptions which would permit the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme to offer the programme to female participants only. We understand that graduates will feel a loyalty to the programme and its decisions. We hope they also feel a responsibility to reflect the diversity of women’s opinions in the party and wider society, and will use their leadership roles to ensure women are consulted about the things that affect us, whether Conservative Party proposals to review the Gender Recognition Act or Labour Party mechanisms to increase women's participation in political life.

I agree.

I've always voted as I believe everyone has a duty to do so. No loyalty to any party, but I have voted Labour in the past. Right now, I have no idea who I would vote for. I would seriously consider spoiling my paper.

BetsyM00 · 02/12/2017 10:09

I agree. If there was an election tomorrow I'd be spoiling my ballot paper - I'll vote for the first party who recognises reality and knows that humans cannot change sex.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 02/12/2017 10:26

Is Anna Lee trolling women with their adopted name? Anna Lee = anally? Grim

Anna Lee said out loud does not sound like anally. It is more like "Amalie"

Anna Lee was an American actress of some considerable fame at one point including being Sister Margaretta inThe Sound of Music

Paperweightmover · 02/12/2017 10:41

I'm getting more and more concerned that there is an underground movement to try and get Labour to shoot itself in the foot so it never gets to power.

If labour members won't vote for labour we could see a real far right party in power. I don't agree with the party 100% but I'd rather try and change things than vote with my feet and let something awful happen to the country.

The only party I can think who might stick their heads up and say you can't change sex are UKIP ?

BeyondAssignation · 02/12/2017 10:50

I have done the really quite depressing thing of passing the info of this over to DH, thinking that a letter from a male member will be taken more seriously than us hysterical women :(

Urgh.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 02/12/2017 11:46

I'm sorry but 'letter from a male member' did make me 'fnar' in context.

A bit like 'pro boner' on the other thread. Grin

NettleTea · 02/12/2017 11:55

BeyondAssignation we have some men sign in solidarity, as well as transwomen and non UK residents
we have well over 100 names, a great number with affilliations so far, this is brilliant, thank you so much everyone. I would hope we will get the letter in a shareable format with signatures by the end of the weekend, ready to land on people's laps on Monday morning.

mumzuki · 02/12/2017 17:28

Me. I was an active Labour party member (vice chair of CLP). Resigned a few days ago. I am done. Emailed party to explain reasons, got standard email in response. Happy to include my name.

bloodyhamabeads · 02/12/2017 17:57

I would like to sign too. I don’t know how to pm though. Can you message me? ☺️

NettleTea · 02/12/2017 18:06

just to make it clear, the more people who can continue adding their support to this thread, the better. So I am carrying on collecting names, but would love for this thread to really get as many comments as possible too

Is it worth contacting sites like gender trender and getting some support from there as well?

NettleTea · 02/12/2017 20:22

we will be doing that, already have support from some of them!

I agree

TalkingintheDark · 02/12/2017 21:32

I agree. Not a party member but a lifelong Labour voter - but not any more. The Labour Party have given a clear signal about what they actually think about women and women's rights and most women in the party seem too cowed and/or brainwashed to fight back. Well, and with Anne Ruzylo we've seen what happens when you do fight back. And the spectacle of right on men falling over themselves to betray and vilify women disgusts me. I will never vote for them again as long as this bullshit continues.

Imagine if a group of management types started trying to take over the Trade Unions. Getting elected to official positions within the unions even though they'd never worked in any trade. Saying it was bigotry to exclude them from having a voice, saying they were just as much trade unionists as anyone else, despite being the ones actually profiting from the ones actually working. Demanding and gaining access to special provisions meant to support people from lower income backgrounds. Trying to redefine what trade unionism is, what it stands for and who it serves, so that all trade union activity now benefits the boss class.

The Labour Party would be totally fine with that, wouldn't they.

This denial of the power dynamic in our society that has existed for so many, many centuries and which has still has such a negative impact on women and girls now, this denial makes me rage.

MsDeerheart · 02/12/2017 21:33

I agree - Labour Party activist and member - don’t want to give name as have has too much grief already about other stuff

counterpoint · 02/12/2017 21:48

Agree the wording has to be foolproof to avoid loophole exploitation by men of any rank.

Would still like to hear if anyone knows what Brendan Cox thinks of this appointment.

Very sad turn of events.

Will be voting Green and am now ex Labour.

QuarksandLeptons · 02/12/2017 22:13

Brilliant analogy TalkingInTheDark

Imherefornow · 03/12/2017 03:23

I agree. Am also a labour party member. Though am seriously considering cancelling my membership, I'm holding on by a shoe string
