I may actually try and go to this if I am feeling brave.

Language is so so important in this.

OP posts:
Ereshkigal · 11/01/2018 15:46

I wonder if they all go to the same newspeak classes?

Lemonjello · 11/01/2018 15:52

I think by bodily autonomy they mean the right to alter their bodies with hormones and surgery.

EamonnWright · 11/01/2018 15:53

however the managers remained complicit in their transphobia and took to hanging up the phone on people calling in

God help the poor sap who turned in for a late shift only to have these half wits pestering him/her on the phone Confused

A right which they already have.

The good thing is that I've shown this thread, the blog about trying to organise the other meeting and Maria's blog about Hyde Park to a friend who has been pushing back at me over this stuff.

"Wait, what? To have a meeting for women it has to be all I'll be the one wearing a red carnation and carrying a copy of The Times? I can't believe it."

"Well, I have been trying to tell you. Lesbians have to have secret groups on Facebook now as well."

"I need to look further into this. Send me some links."

So, the need to organise in secret is something that can tip otherwise disbelieving women over the edge. Thanks, ACQuee, you did me a favour there.

Redonionricedpotato · 11/01/2018 15:58

Yeah they don’t realise they’re actually helping our cause, they’re too thick. Keep up the emergency demos guys, brilliant way to peak trans people!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/01/2018 15:58

I imagine they quite enjoyed the ridiculousness of the situation. A vicious hate group consisting of well dressed middle aged women, defenders of liberty and freedom with hidden faces shouting unintelligent unintelligible slogans and harassing their staff.

I suspect it made a generally boring Wednesday evening rather more entertaining.

terfing · 11/01/2018 15:58

Wait, so was one if the "terfs" flicking water on the TRAs? Not sure that I'm cool with that... I'm sympathetic, but that kind of behavior is out of order. Sad

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/01/2018 16:00

Yes, it might have been Venice?

I thought it was a mistake, along with one of the speakers also being verbally aggressive and fronting up.

It sucks, but our "side" needs to be squeaky clean. Violence and aggression will lose us support if nothing else.

I'm sorry but that statement is just a big spew of footstampy narcissistic rage and the persecution complex seems almost pathological.

I was sitting two rows back from the "incident" so had quite a clear view and I have to be honest and say that the first speaker of the evening (who I found very moving as a speaker) did react aggressively and flicked water from a glass at the very obvious (and large) TIM that was part of the group of three TAs that caused the disruption.

I didn't see any actual blows but it all happened very fast before security came in and huckled the group out. Joanna stepped in too I think to try and calm things down and I could hear him saying to the TAs "But I'm trans too".

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/01/2018 16:02

I'm not sure if the altercation was filmed? Venice was in there with the laptop, but I don't know if the livestream was down or not. There were also a few women filming on their phones.

I was bravely hiding in a corner.

OP posts:
SonicBoomBoom · 11/01/2018 16:05

Lots of people got their phones out to video it when the TAs jumped up and started yelling (very quick thinking by them, I was too busy freaking out and panicking) so there'll be footage.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/01/2018 16:06

There is mainly audio (and some very trippy visuals) here (from about 5 mins)

The ITN journos filmed it and a couple of women were filming on phones.

I did appreciate Joanna trying to calm things down at that point. Still feeling v uncomfortable about the young woman with Downs.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/01/2018 16:09

Still feeling v uncomfortable about the young woman with Downs

Yes. That left a bad taste in my mouth too.

ItsAll I wish I'd been hiding in a corner!

We were the first people in the room and could have sat at the back but I ended up choosing the seats that were a bit too close for comfort in light of what happened.

I know why you're saying that we need to be squeaky clean otherwise any mis-step gets jumped on and I agree but I hate that it has to be that way.

I'm not advocating violence but as a nippy sweetie myself I'd have found it very hard to be calm under provocation and it was obvious that that particular panellist was very passionate (I'm sorry that I can't remember her name.)

SonicBoomBoom · 11/01/2018 16:15

Yes, we do have to be squeaky clean.

However, I can't blame Kate for her reaction at all. We had no idea how quickly that situation was going to escalate and how. I know I felt very threatened and I was on the other side of the room.

Nineteenagain · 11/01/2018 16:17

I was three rows from the front. There were no 'assaults' just a bit of pushing and shoving. Security lead them away very gently and slowly as far as recall coz i kept thinking hurry up and get them out. I tried to video but forgot to press recordBlush

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/01/2018 16:23

Interesting to see an MSP is member of their closed community (Ross Greer unsurprisingly)

I'm sorry but that statement is just a big spew of footstampy narcissistic rage and the persecution complex seems almost pathological.

In my experience that's quite typical. I once viewed a discussion by TAs about trans people's position on a 10 point scale of genocide. They decided they were at no 8! Some disagreed and felt they should be higher, except that would basically be the Holocaust.

terryleather · 11/01/2018 17:11

Ereshkigal Shock Shock Shock

Every time I think I can't be shocked by this TA bs I get peak transed all over again.

But I guess if misgendering is "literal violence" then a meeting like last night can only be a few steps away from the Holocaust Hmm

Ereshkigal · 11/01/2018 18:04

I've just been thinking about this with regards to another comment. I think many TAs are narcissists, so to them as they experience opposition to their will and disagreement as "narcissistic injury" it maybe does make sense to think of it as "violence".

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissisticrageeandnarcissisticcinjury

Narcissistic injury occurs when a narcissist feels that their hidden, "true self" has been revealed. This may be the case when the narcissist experiences a "fall from grace", such as when their hidden behaviors or motivations are revealed, or when their importance is brought into questionn^. Narcissistic injury is a cause of distress and can lead to dysregulationn^ of behaviors as in narcissistic rage.

Seeingadistance · 11/01/2018 18:05

What is the community that Ross Greer is a member of? I can't make it out from the image.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/01/2018 18:06

The closed group that belongs to the FB page that organised the protest.
