I have to say I'm biased and I've always loathed Coren, but holy fucking shit...

He's also pretty normal on his Instagram Stories. Nothing provocative or offensive other than a bit of sarky grumpiness about other annoying guests in the hotel (he's filming that hotels thing with Monica Galetti at the moment)

Apart from when he went to that trendy restaurant and made insta story after insta story about someone being on their laptop in there, calling them a cunt, showing all his followers, until THEN it turned out the person was the head chef/owner of the place and he began completely sucking up to him.

Obnoxious and mortifying.**

ElspethFlashman · 22/10/2017 14:06

Oh my god yes I forgot! That was 1000 levels of cringe.

At least he was cringing too. Too right.

ChattyLion · 22/10/2017 14:41

Jesus wept Roly that subbing complaint. It's absolutely delusional. Giles Coren seems to have confused himself with some kind of grand literary figure of journalism.
Everyone must have fallen about in the office when that arrived. Grin

hipsterfun · 22/10/2017 14:53

I have written 350 restaurant reviews for The Times and i have never ended on an unstressed syllable.

Actual lol.

Popchyk · 22/10/2017 15:00

God, that letter is just shameful. He has no awareness about himself.

A quick "In future, can you send me the final copy so that I can check it before publication? Thank you" would have sufficed if he truly doesn't want his self-indulgent claptrap renaissance fresco being messed with.

He is like a Kentish Town David Brent.

ohfourfoxache · 22/10/2017 15:13

I've been thinking about this thread since last night. I don't usually post in feminism (basically because my BP would be permanently off the scale) but I feel so angry about it that I had to.

I am so sick of the focus on looks. The Last Leg did it with HW a week ago, suggesting that if he was better looking that somehow it would be more acceptable for him to be an abusive wankbadger.

And now GC says that, now that he's older and less attractive, that it's time to stop being a creepy fuckwit.

I am so sick of this attitude. I've experienced problems with old men, middle aged, young. But d'ya know what? It doesn't fucking matter what they look like. Abuse is never ok. It doesn't matter if they look like a Greek God or Jabba the Hutt - it's wrong. And I'm fucking sick of the attitude that, men who are old and fat and ugly = wrong, men who are young and fit and beautiful = acceptable.

Sorry for the rant, I just needed to let that out

Mrskeats · 22/10/2017 15:22

I’m a bit confused about the first paragraph. Who ends a work email with xxx ? That’s just weird and unprofessional.
Would he do that if the sender was a man?
The ‘just touching’ bit is unbelievable. Did an editor read this through and think it was fine as well? So grim.

WinchestersInATardis · 22/10/2017 16:47

I think this whole 'it's would be okay if he were physically attractive thing' stems from their failure to recognise women as humans, and not walking sex dolls.
They're seeing it from their pov which is they'd welcome a come on if she were young and firm, but not if old and wrinkly.
Whereas for most mature and decent humans, physical attractiveness is deeply intertwined with attraction to the actual human underneath.

ohfourfoxache · 22/10/2017 16:57

Winchester you've just crystallised my thoughts precisely. I just find it so abhorrent that abuse and harassment is deemed to be acceptable if the perpetrator is good looking.

And I think that the part that depresses me the most is that this view is so widespread.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 22/10/2017 18:03

That 2008 email to his editors Shock

I agree with a PP about he wants to be the male Katie Hopkins. Except KH doesn’t have 2 BBC programmes and is an outward joke. He seems to think he needs to be respected.

Of to the BBC website I go to complain,::

Lottapianos · 22/10/2017 19:09

Ohfour, yes yes to your post. I was cringing (much more than usual) listening to James O'Brien on LBC radio this week swearing blind that Harvey Weinstein answering the door in a towel would be completely different to Leonardo DiCaprio (or other fit bloke) answering the door in a towel. HIS OWN WIFE texted him during the show to tell him not to be such an arsehole and to his credit (i suppose) he read it out and ate humble pie. He's one of those blokes who declares himself a great 'feminist' but actually doesn't have a bloody clue. Not as offensive as Coren though

BadenBadenBadenBaden · 22/10/2017 19:14

I don't listen to LBC so I don't know who James O'Brien is but his wife sounds great.

BadenBadenBadenBaden · 22/10/2017 19:20

Also, I haven't read this yet but it sounds like the kind of thing Giles could do with reading.

QuentinSummers · 22/10/2017 19:30

I’m a bit confused about the first paragraph. Who ends a work email with xxx

I've done it but it was an accident plus lack of proofreading Blush

Mrskeats · 22/10/2017 19:33

Yep I can see that happening but he’s meant to be a writer fgs.
He’s an idiot though as we’ve established Smile

Childrenofthestones · 22/10/2017 20:38

Interesting that Coren, Weinstein, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon are all left-wing self declaring male feminists.

Mrskeats · 22/10/2017 20:40

If they think there attitudes are feminist they need to look that term up.

ohfourfoxache · 22/10/2017 20:49

Lotta that is absolutely disgusting Angry

I'm so glad he read out his wife's text though.

I think that part of the problem is that so many people haven't got a fucking clue and genuinely need someone to point it out to them (a la James O'Brien). Question is, how the hell can we ensure that attitudes change??

IfNot · 22/10/2017 20:55

I once knew a cocktail waitress who had Matt Damon in her section. He spent the evening trying to grab her arse. Left a big tip apparently. Prince among men.

Lottapianos · 22/10/2017 21:48

Ugh. That's really disappointing IfNot. I had him down as one of the decent ones.

Sunshineandshopping · 22/10/2017 21:55

Yuck!

HelenDenver · 22/10/2017 21:55

"It turns out that Giles Coren is a bigger arsehole than I'd thought. This is not a surprise."

Nailed it, nauticant.

HelenDenver · 22/10/2017 22:01

And ugh, that Esquire article.

I hope his wife makes like Tim Lott's wife and legs it.

franke · 22/10/2017 22:15

The David Paxton piece that baden linked to (via Hadley Freeman) is worth a read.

IfNot · 22/10/2017 22:55

It was some years ago Lotta. He may have reformed. Although I tend to think not.
