I have to say I'm biased and I've always loathed Coren, but holy fucking shit...

Ughh. Why is he paid to write this shit?

troodiedoo · 21/10/2017 12:28

@LonginesPrime max clifford speaking after the Saville abuse scandal springs to mind...

whiskyowl · 21/10/2017 12:29

"Ughh. Why is he paid to write this shit?"

I agree - was just thinking the same thing.

I know columnists have been paid to write inanities for decades, but I honestly wonder whether they will be replaced soon by rather more able people, who have rather more of a clue. There's a whole new generation of brilliant essayists out there who are producing really thoughtful, stimulating, intellectually-rich, well-written material. Surely the days of the self-indulgent wank spewed by people whose egos overshadow their ideas must be ending?

IfNot · 21/10/2017 12:33

Oh! I get it now.
Women were only repulsed by Weinstein, and accusing him of assault because he's old and ugly. And now Giles is also old and ugly he better start watching how he treats women and girls in case they start "coming out of the woodwork" and accusing him of all sorts because they don't fancy him.
It's so weird, because the majority of men who have tried to rape/touch/kiss me without my consent have actually been quite conventionally attractive.
But I'm probably lying about that as my silly little women brain gets all confused.
Can he really be this stupid?? He can't really think a bit of flirting with a waitress is going to be considered abuse now that he is losing his hair or whatever??
Maybe he's having some kind of breakdown.
And that thing about his baby daughter is revolting and should probably see him on some sort of register. .

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 21/10/2017 13:05

Ah yes. Getting the special pleading in in advance. Makes sense.
Nothing else about the article does.

nauticant · 21/10/2017 13:08

It's certainly what came to my mind. Very much an "if I have done something, and I'm not saying I have, it will be more of a misunderstanding over etiquette than anything else".

fruitlovingmonkey · 21/10/2017 13:13

The full text doesn't exonerate him at all. There is so much wrong with it. If anything, it's worse than the shocking tweets. A lot of words feeling sorry for himself and the other poor male victims.
I'm repulsed by the idea that sexual harassment by an attractive man would be welcomed. Is burglary ok if the perpetrator is rich and therefore doesn't really need the swag?
As a pp mentioned, apparently men can now rape and murder women without it affecting their career. I'm sure Giles' will survive if one of the teeth-gritters comes forward.
The first rule of writing is 'write about what you know'. Cohen doesn't have a fucking clue what it means to be a woman. I don't want Weinstein swept under the carpet but we really don't need articles by clueless men telling us how to feel about sexual harassment, assault and rape. Editors should be calling their female columnists to report from the frontline. Leave Cohen and cronies in their clubs, trying not to flirt with waitresses. We don't need to hear about it.

TrickOrRuddyTreat · 21/10/2017 13:21

Let's face it, it suits men to believe there are scenarios where you could "accidentally" harass someone

^ this. This is exactly why women dont report harassment/assault/rape, because they are invariably told that they've 'overreacted'. It's totally possible to misread the signals someone is giving you (whether you're male or female) but women don't go round crying harassment when that genuinely is the case. And we really can tell the difference between misunderstanding and entitlement.

From the Mother & Baby article:

My wife Esther gave birth for the second time three months ago, and I’m DESPERATE for her to lose the weight...I want my super-hot, wasp-waisted, killer-boobed sexpot wife back from the old days.

Then he describes how he concocted a plan to trick her into losing weight for his own benefit!

And he thinks it’s his age that’s making him appear unattractive? Hmm

hipsterfun · 21/10/2017 13:35

Reading anything by Toby young has a similar effect.

That was my second thought, too.

My first was that I think poor little Gilesey-Wilesey’s conscience, such as it is, is troubling him.

nauticant · 21/10/2017 13:39

You've got to feel sorry for him though. Imagine being eclipsed by a sibling who not only is younger than him but is also a woman. An actual woman. Where's the fairness in that?

hipsterfun · 21/10/2017 13:42

And one who has had the temerity not to conform to a few gender norms.

fairyofallthings · 21/10/2017 13:51

It's not their responsibility but I hope he gets shit from his wife and teenage kids. The sack would be good too...what a tosser.

SparkwoodAnd21 · 21/10/2017 16:11

God. He really is an unutterable cunt.

Bucketsandspoons · 21/10/2017 16:22

Oh ffs cut the tragedy you silly man.

Fairly simple, kids have this nailed by the age of four in schools so I'm confident you can get your head around it. Keep Your Hands To Yourself and don't try to pressure or coerce anyone into sexual contact. That's it. That's all.

And there is no such thing as 'just touching' any more than it's ok to write in the wistful tone implying that once there were good old days when it was ok for a man to have a bit of fun with someone else's body, whether or not they consented, without mean, rabid women taking the huff.

ElspethFlashman · 21/10/2017 17:05

The kids are only 4&6 or thereabouts. He has a piece in Esquire this month about how hard it is to have a chubby son.

This is the 4 year old, to be clear. Who actually looks entirely average to me.

nauticant · 21/10/2017 17:16

It sounds like many of Coren's pieces are about how difficult his life is.

I would love to get his pay (6 figures?) for churning out a couple of thousand words a week whining about my life.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/10/2017 17:21

Ach...he is a scummy little fuckwit

hipsterfun · 21/10/2017 17:21

Looking for that, I’ve just read an unpleasant piece about his son’s circumcision. I know he’s writing for the Esquire audience, but ugh...

CaoNiMwahaha · 21/10/2017 17:36

Well, it makes a change from him blethering on about A. A. Gill. However, it's still utter tosh.

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 21/10/2017 17:52

Does it not occur to this pathetic turd that one day his children will grow up and read the intrusive trash he has written about them?
I hope the waiter in the next restaurant he goes to gobs in his food. Actually I suspect that’s happened more than a few times already ..,

Shouldnotwouldnot · 21/10/2017 19:07

I read this today (I don’t buy the times but was out) and was SO incensed I came on here to look thinking ‘someone else must realise what an absolutely utterly cunty piece of journalism this is’. I’m glad I’m not losing my mind.....

HeyRoly · 21/10/2017 19:22

I've just Googled the circumcision piece Hipster, and baulked about six times at his horrible turns of phrase. I thought it was bad enough that he talked about his wife's "perfect tits and loose morals" but then he described her having a miscarriage: "In the dentist's chair of all places — poor guy must have thought he'd drilled right through her". Then he throws in gags about "butt-rape" and prostitution just to round things off nicely. What a vile specimen.

Um, I was under the impression that it was never ok to be standing naked but for a bathrobe looking like you want sex in a business meeting. For that’s what we’re talking about.

What an idiot. I hope this backfires on him. Bet it doesn’t.

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 21/10/2017 19:29

I’d back Janice turner to give him a good hiding, verbally at least.
I love you JT, in case you’re reading
