Woman jailed for ten years for false rape accusations

Can we discuss this case? It's interesting for lots of reasons, including that the sentence she has been given for making multiple false accusations is over three times the length that one of the men who was falsely accused was given for actual rape

It's also interesting the vitriol at her is far more than tends to be aimed at actual rapists. Rapes are so commonplace but rarely (never) are they used to suggest "this is why we need to work on improving the woefully low conviction rate" and so forth in comments on cases (when they're actually reported). Often there's doubt cast on the veracity of the victim even after a conviction with excuses made for the perpetrator.

It's also interesting as I said something like this makes national news yet a case like this only ever made the local newspaper where it happened: www.newhamrecorder.co.uk/news/crime-court/plaistow-rapist-who-dragged-teenage-girl-from-stratford-street-and-threatened-to-stab-her-is-jailed-for-21-years-1-4915997

The disproportionate reporting a case such as that being discussed here gets compared to even rapes of women and girls being attacked by men entirely unknown to them is relevant in my opinion. A teenage girl being abducted from the street, threatened at knife point then raped yet few outside the specific local area it happened would even know about it.

Also, a study in America showed men were more likely to be raped than be falsely accused of rape.

Little miss
"think it's bad that she got longer then a rapist. "

Are you comparing apples and oranges?
If you want to go down that road try comparing her sentence to what a man would get for raping 15 women.

DeleteOrDecay · 25/08/2017 09:40

Reading those comments it's almost like the default is that the woman is 'crying rape' when ever an allegation is made.

So strange because when you hear about someone getting mugged or burgled, people don't automatically question the victims motives do they? The default in those cases is that the mugger/burglar MUST be caught.

RebelRogue · 25/08/2017 09:42

@LassWiTheDelicateAir but is it a common defence and societal perception that victims lie about theft?

HorridHenryrule · 25/08/2017 09:44

The police investigated because her gf grassed her up. The police would be none the wiser if she hadn't said anything.

MorrisZapp · 25/08/2017 09:45

Heard this on the radio and my heart sank. I can't face the comments online so I'm avoiding them.

Apparently women mentioning that men commit rape is unfair, sexist etc but it's fine to say women make shit up.

It's all too depressing.

JigglyTuff · 25/08/2017 09:52

I think the reporting of this case (headline on Radio 4 news) has given the NAMALTs an absolute field day. See attached tweet from charming US comedian - it's absolutely fine for men to accuse most women of lying about rape

It would be responsible of the media to make the point that false rape allegations are at the same level as other false crime reporting eg very rare. But who cares about women?

False allegations against another human being is morally wrong. Men are reported in exactly the same way when they have been convicted of raping women or children. Why should it be different when a woman lies. The article sends shivers down my spine.

NoLoveofMine · 25/08/2017 10:02

The vast majority of cases of men convicted of rape make no national news, as they're so commonplace.

The people who lie most frequently about rape are men who rape.

@IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday

It cannot be right that we imprison the mentally ill, especially those who require treatment. How does locking these people up help the individual or society?

Unless you think the only purpose of prison is retribution & punishment which is very short-sighted.

If her mental condition has not been given the consideration it should have been by the judge, I cannot find the summing up & the possibly unreliable published comments suggest not, then there will rightly be an appeal.

If we stop locking up the mentally ill without treatment & treating all those who need it whether subject to the criminal justice system or not, society will be improved for everyone.

MrGHardy · 25/08/2017 10:06

But what constitutes as mentally ill? And should she keep roaming free and just see a therapist?

HorridHenryrule · 25/08/2017 10:10

Is a rapist mentally ill and would treatment benefit him more than prison.

HorridHenryrule · 25/08/2017 10:14

You commit a crime you get what you deserve. Some people don't know how to keep their arse still.

NoLoveofMine · 25/08/2017 10:14

Rapists are offered treatment in prison. See this case where a rapist convicted for yet another attack was offered treatment whilst his victim was put on a waiting list not knowing when she'd start getting any: www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/15280636.VIDEO___Dangerous__rapist_jailed_for_life___but_are_there_more_victims_/

The harrowing attack has left the victim 'too scared to live her life in the way she did before', feeling unsafe wherever she goes and shuddering when a man comes near her, a statement to the court read.

She believed it was 'unjust' she was forced onto a waiting list for counselling to help her come to terms with the ordeal while Pearton was offered the service behind bars.

Collidascope · 25/08/2017 10:23

Has anyone read about Ian Watkins today, and the women who reported him to police for abusing children, but were ignored? I imagine that case won't be held up as evidence as to why women should be taken seriously when they report abuse in the way that this false allegations case is being held up as evidence of why women should be disbelieved.

Reginald D Hunter is disgusting.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 25/08/2017 10:27

And they are used to scam insurances, not individuals. Have you ferret ever heard of a case where a person says "that guy burgled me"?

Not always and yes i have

Word of mouth as i dont think they ever made the paper...to be fair i am not sure they made it to court as i heard these stories from a police officer

HorridHenryrule · 25/08/2017 10:28

She must be so angry at the system. Where is the care and empathy towards these victims. I read that a woman in Birmingham was raped twice the second time was when she went to get help.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 25/08/2017 10:29

Oh and before anyone says

Not sticking up for her i think she got what she deserved

HorridHenryrule · 25/08/2017 10:31

100% agree Rufus.

NoLoveofMine · 25/08/2017 10:35

I read that a woman in Birmingham was raped twice the second time was when she went to get help.

That was a 14 year old girl recently and yes, abhorrent. Thankfully the first attacker has been charged but I don't believe the second one has been yet.

Datun · 25/08/2017 10:37

It's not whether this woman got what she deserved, for me. It's how rape as a crime is considered worse in the context of a false accusation than a correct accusation.

hasitcometothis33 · 25/08/2017 10:39

Why are people saying she has a mental illness?

EUPD isn't a mental illness

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 25/08/2017 10:46

Nope i agree with datun
