Adults only now? Shocking age discrimination, think we should formally complain about that. I can't think of any reason children and adults shouldn't swim together and why adults would enjoy it more or feel more comfortable without children there as well 🙄Hmm

I've signed the petition.

Greentorch · 10/08/2017 05:23

I've signed. Bloody angry about this. I bet this was a popular session too. I used to go to one at my pool and it was such a different atmosphere to the mixed sessions. Much more calm. Less competitive, splashy swimming. But also, most importantly, a safe place for women.

Do they not get it that many women feel vulnerable or threatened wearing swimwear around men they don't know? Why is that so hard to understand/easy to dismiss?

The legal position – a little more detail
The Equality and Human Rights Commission make it clear that as a service provider you are allowed to provide single-sex services (services just for men or just for women) where:
 this is objectively justified on the grounds of low participation in sport in one gender

 only men or only women require the service

 there is joint provision for both sexes but that is not enough on its own

 if the service were provided for men and women jointly, it would not be as
effective and the extent to which each sex requires the service makes it not
reasonably practicable to provide separate services for each sex

 the services may be used by more than one person at the same time and a
woman might reasonably object to the presence of a man (or vice versa)

 the services may involve physical contact between a user and someone else,
and that other person may reasonably object if the user is of the opposite sex.

The EHRC give an example of how this* could be applied: ‘in a commercial gym and swimming pool, women-only swimming sessions could be provided as well as mixed sessions.’*

Ffs. IT IS NOT DISCRIMINATORY. What is happening in the world

Sorry about that formatting mess - I'm on my phone.

Just bumping for the petition.

It is discriminatory. Unless they've made provision for men for the duration of the women-only sessions, then its unlawful.

Lottapianos · 10/08/2017 21:21

Signed. FFS how ridiculous. This madness has to be stopped

MrsQuim · 10/08/2017 21:27

Signed

OytheBumbler · 10/08/2017 21:28

I've signed.

I can't understand why people would object to a women only swim session. What possible impact can, what, an hour a week, have on their own lives? Confused

That one hour a week might be the only hour they are available to go swimming.

Nickynackynoodle · 10/08/2017 21:37

Have you read the law angel ? It's not "unlawful" so educate yourself a bit before you handmaiden yourself on here.
And maybe work on your empathy.

OP posts:
AngeloftheSouth84 · 10/08/2017 21:41

I don't do empathy

Airobnb · 10/08/2017 21:43

I can understand the safe spaces argument, but is this not a form of segregation? Do we really want to start segregating women from men? And if so, are men really that awful and leery and splashy that we need them out?
Mixing sexes is socially acceptable in most western cultures.
I can't see this as a good thing.

Nickynackynoodle · 10/08/2017 21:45

Clearly. Now run along, the grownups are talking.

OP posts:
Nickynackynoodle · 10/08/2017 21:47

airib have you done any research into this outside of your own bubble? Do you know how many women experience sexual harassment even when fully dressed and in broad daylight?

Can you not even imagine how a woman who has been abused might feel in a mixed sex swimming session? Go on, try. Imagine.

One hour. One fucking hour. That's all they were asking for. One. Hour.

OytheBumbler · 10/08/2017 21:47

Looking at my local baths - the main pool has loads of sessions aimed at particular groups -swimming lessons, fun sessions, disabled swimming, over 50 swimming, aqua-aerobics, synchronised swimming and a women only session.

If a person needs to swim at one particular time it's up to them to find a pool that accommodates them.

RebelRogue · 10/08/2017 22:07

Not only that but there are women from other cultures and religions that can't or won't freely swim around men. I guess they don't deserve one hour a week either.

Benefit of living in the midst of an orthodox jewish community Grin there would be uproar if the women only sessions were cancelled here. Our pool also does male only and adult only too.

DearMrDilkington · 10/08/2017 22:29

I've signed.

Surely they can do another session the same for men only, then nobody can complain. Problem solved.

BakedBeans47 · 10/08/2017 22:31

That is terrible I would be lost if they did that where I live and talking to other women at swimming I am not alone. In fact they did stop the ladies' session a few years back but brought it back again shortly afterwards.

TheNightmanCometh · 10/08/2017 22:58

Apparently you don't do law either angel...

TitaniasCloset · 10/08/2017 23:14

I just don't like being around men when I'm half naked/in a swimsuit, this would put me off going swimming.

I come from a religion where you are supposed to cover up, I'm overweight and have had nasty comments from men while out and have had bad past experiences. I don't want to go to mixed swimming sessions.
