What are we not allowed to say we feel uncomfortable any more? We always have to justify our private spaces and there is always some woman who bounces in and says she is fine with complete nudity in front of strange men so we all should be. Fuck off.

Airobnb · 10/08/2017 23:17

Why @Nickynackynoodle are we only allowed to opt in the feminists board if we agree with the OP?

I'm a feminist and believe women are equal to men a d I understand the need for separate changing facilities and toilets but I don't believe that segregating women from men in swimming pools is of benefit to society.
And yes @RebelRogue "there are women from other cultures and religions that can't or won't freely swim around men".
You are right, but I do not think that as a civilised society, that is something to aspire to.

Of course abused women feel uncomfortable around men in close proximity situations. But there are men everywhere, on the tube, sharing lifts, etc, which are much closer than swimming pools and often unavoidable situations in life. We can't hide from them. If we go down that road, we end up with a segregated society.

TheresSomebodyAtTheDoor · 10/08/2017 23:18

This is my local pool :(

TitaniasCloset · 10/08/2017 23:22

But I'm here telling you I don't feel comfortable and won't go swimming if it's mixed? Why I am not allowed to feel this way?

DeleteOrDecay · 10/08/2017 23:25

but I don't believe that segregating women from men in swimming pools is of benefit to society.

It doesn't do any harm either. Seriously it's one hour a week.

Do you feel the same about sessions for disabled people or pensioners?

RebelRogue · 10/08/2017 23:46

@Airobnb indeed it is not. But until the day when their lives will change do you not think that them having a safe space, doing something they enjoy, socialise and mingle, out of the house, with no constraints is a good thing?
Do you think taking the option away from them is the way forward instead?

VestalVirgin · 10/08/2017 23:47

What are we not allowed to say we feel uncomfortable any more?

Because men don't like hearing that their behaviour as a class makes women uncomfortable. We are not allowed feelings. We are to be good little sex objects and shut up.
See also, men throwing tantrums about women not wanting to talk to them at fucking three a.m. in a lonely hotel hallway.

I don't believe that segregating women from men in swimming pools is of benefit to society.

I don't fucking care whether it is of benefit to "society". I am content that it is beneficial to women.

And for your information, I wouldn't mind a segregated society, either. If men can't behave, let's build a wall around half of the country and put them there until they have learnt to fucking behave themselves.

It is not women's job to smile and pretend that all is well when men harrass and rape us and then whine that it is oh so very difficult to prove and punish rape.

If I could just walk away from it all, if there was an island that was only for women, well, I'd go there.

But such things only exist in the Wonder Woman movie ...or not even there, as there's a dude there, too.

DJBaggySmalls · 10/08/2017 23:55

There is no harm whatsoever in having groups for a specific demographic.
People who dont like it can use the mixed sessions only as a point of principle and stop dictating to everyone else how they should live.

Nickynackynoodle · 10/08/2017 23:58

vestal well said. Well fucking said.

airo so whilst we are not aspiring to that, these women can just... what? Sit in their houses? Have a word with yourself. Maybe do some reading or something to understand this issue.

Well done for being progressive, but fucking hell, listen to what women are saying?

98% of sex offenders are men. Women get wanked on whilst they are ON THE TUBE.

One fucking hour. Does that offend you so much?

And yes @RebelRogue "there are women from other cultures and religions that can't or won't freely swim around men

If that were the only reason for having single sex sessions I think it is a very poor one, but it isn't the only reason.

RebelRogue · 11/08/2017 00:17

@LassWiTheDelicateAir I never said it was? I just added it as another reason why they are needed/beneficial.

buggerthebotox · 11/08/2017 00:17

I'm ok with women only sessions provided there are men-only sessions where women are prohibited.

Only fair. Imho. Smile

TitaniasCloset · 11/08/2017 00:21

But are men even requesting that? No point offering men only sessions if there are no takers.

Datun · 11/08/2017 00:22

I'll be more than happy if a swimming pool wanted to provide men only sessions. I'd be bloody shocked if there was any take up.

purpleme12 · 11/08/2017 00:27

Our swimming pool does women only and men only sessions

RebelRogue · 11/08/2017 00:28

Well the person who complained did not want men only sessions, they just didn't want women having something just for them. That's where the thinking and protesting and complaining stops.
Equality innit?

Airobnb · 11/08/2017 00:28

No I don't think disabled or oap sessions should stop.
But segregating men and women represents a step in the direction of further segregation, schools, shopping, parks, is that what we want? It seems to be pushed by members of religions that treat women as unequal to a far greater extent than the UK does. I doubt that a large number are there because they are afraid of men. It's a cultural thing mainly and one I do not want to see pushed here.
After reading the posts about wanting to live on an island of women, I feel my views come from a very different place. I like a lot men, love a few and they add to my life. Yes I've experienced sexism and unfairness based on my sex but living on an island full of women sounds horrific.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 11/08/2017 00:30

LassWiTheDelicateAir I never said it was? I just added it as another reason why they are needed/beneficial

I know you added it as another reason I personally don't think it is one which should carry much weight.

There is nothing to prevent pools offering men only sessions if there was a demand for them but there doesn't seem to be. Some pools offer nudist sessions for example. I'm sure a poster mentioned this on a thread once and that the one she knew of was pretty much a men only session.

scottishdiem · 11/08/2017 00:31

I'd be bloody shocked if there was any take up.

Check your privilege. Some men have severe body confidence issues. Other men aren't even suppose to see women without several layers of very modest clothing. There should be single sex sessions for both men and women.

TitaniasCloset · 11/08/2017 00:31

You can't answer my comment can you? I feel more comfortable in a women only session for various reasons, so do many other women. Why is that not ok with you? Why must I do what you think is right?

twelly · 11/08/2017 00:32

Whist I think women only sessions are desirable I can see the argument that asks for male only sessions as well, especially as the timing of the women once session precludes males. Provision for both genders is needed I believe for equality

TitaniasCloset · 11/08/2017 00:33

Lass - the swimming pool near me offers muslim women only swim and gym session. This is the only opportunity that these women will get to have a swim or work out. You would seriously cancel that just because you don't agree with their religion?

noblegiraffe · 11/08/2017 00:34

You just know who will have complained about this. No way is it someone who wants to swim at that time, it'll be some angry man who doesn't like women having something that he can't have, so he's going to take it from them.

And fuck the reasons why they might need it.

Datun · 11/08/2017 00:35

I'm not disagreeing. I have no issue at all with a man only swim. None of our local pools have a demand for it.

All four of them, however, have women only swims. Which are packed.

If the only way to retain a woman only swim, is to provide a man only swim. I'm all for it.

RebelRogue · 11/08/2017 00:35

Check your privilege

Dunno wether to laugh or cry. Confused
