Because of a complaint. Article and petition link here Angry

My problem would be that having a ds it would impact him. After you have given 1 hour to this group and an hour to that group the number of hours we can both swim is reduced and reduced. At some points during the day there is barely 1/2 hour when we can go. We would both like to go daily but by the time you block out when the pool is not open to the public and school and after school activities you are left with 1 session per week.

NoLoveofMine · 11/08/2017 15:38

Most men couldn't get in there either!

The point is that they are legally allowed to exclude women from ever being members. Any male theoretically could become one (some men who are come from working class backgrounds), no female could.

Looks like the working class men lost their right to exclude women but the upper classes to go to keep theirs.

Again it sounds as if you're lamenting men losing this "right".

deydododatdodontdeydo · 11/08/2017 15:40

Again it sounds as if you're lamenting men losing this "right".

I've specifically said the opposite of that.
Sounds like you're deliberately trying to misinterpret what I've said.

NoLoveofMine · 11/08/2017 15:44

What was your point regarding men losing supposedly "male only spaces" (which pubs haven't been for decades anyway) in the context of women only swimming being stopped whilst men only members and golf clubs continue, in the case of the former, unabated?

noeffingidea · 11/08/2017 15:44

oliver that's the same for everyone though. It's not just women's only sessions, there is aquafit, over 50 classes, swimming clubs, school classes, etc. Why pick on the women's sessions?
Pools do rely on block bookings to make money. That does limit the amount of freeswimming available, unfortunately.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 11/08/2017 15:48

I've already answered that, NoLove.
My comment was in response to DrinkFeckArseGirls' comment (which I quoted).

VestalVirgin · 11/08/2017 15:50

Only problem i have is how do they check you're trans? I could pitch up saying i'm scott, i'm male and you're a bigot if you say otherwise.

Well, yes, but you won't do that, now, will you? You have zero reason to invade their space. Unless you can only swim at that time, which is unlikely.
And they don't want physical protection from people who are not trans. They are not afraid of radical feminists even.
What they are afraid of is radical feminists talking.

And you cannot criticise genderism at such a group without automatically outing yourself.

NoLoveofMine · 11/08/2017 15:51

I don't see it as being relevant to women only swimming sessions and her point which I agree with on golf clubs and members clubs which won't be forced to change but alright.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 11/08/2017 15:57

She asked a question (admittedly rhetorical) and I answered it.
I didn't intend any more to it than that with regard to wider relevance.

OlennasWimple · 11/08/2017 16:33

Did you see what happened when Frankie Boyle supported the petition on Twitter? Grin

OlennasWimple · 11/08/2017 16:34

the actual Twitter thread is quite amusing too

PinglePongle · 11/08/2017 16:48

Personally think that the main pool should be open to all every day to everyone and the training pool used for lessons, special sessions etc

This is not the case in my council run pool and it leaves less than 3 hrs of family swim available in total to working people in a 7 day week

DeleteOrDecay · 11/08/2017 17:05

I go swimming with ds. So wouldn't use the women only sessions. I really cant see the problem. You are under water and no one can see anything. I wear a towel till I get to the pool then leave it on the side then dive in.
In answer to someone on the first page. I am overweight and have never had any issues with men saying anything it is always women who are the nasty ones.

Did you read the thread? Just because YOU don't feel you personally need women's only sessions doesn't mean no one else should get to benefit from them.

It's this sort of closed minded attitude that causes stuff like this to happen. For some strange reason, some people out there don't like things happening unless it benefits them personally. It's like people get jealous when someone else gets something that they don't/can't have. Even something as insignificant as a one hour swimming session a week. It's like when a sibling suddenly wants to play with the toy they were previously ignoring because their little sibling started playing with it. It truly is pathetic.

It's not difficult to understand that there are many genuine reasons for women only swimming sessions and wanting to take them away because you can't look outside of your little bubble and see that although it doesn't benefit you, it does benefit many other women is just selfish.

MineKraftCheese · 11/08/2017 17:09

@OlennasWimple yes! He's wonderful. Loved his satirical show on BBC too.

RebelRogue · 11/08/2017 17:11

Just looked at a random pool near me 15 sessions where @Oliversmumsarmy could swim with her son, public swimming, lane swimming with children and family swimming. And just one session for ladies only. Not feeling the sympathy tbh.

user53592952153 · 11/08/2017 18:03

38 hours a week when you can swim with your child at our local pool during the summer holidays, none are women only. There is adult only every day for an hour.

TheresSomebodyAtTheDoor · 11/08/2017 18:06

There isn't a main pool and a training pool. It's a single pool that is extremely well used, fantastic range of classes, cannot fault the staff that work there.

Thanks to everyone who has signed the petition, I hope they get decent legal advice now.

joolspoon · 11/08/2017 18:08

I know the pool and the changing rooms are mixed. The showers are on side of pool.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 11/08/2017 21:01

Lass pandering to religious beliefs?
How about just recognising that women have a variety of reasons for wanting to have sex segragated sessions, some of which may be religiously motivated

There is no rational reason for separate facilities like this being provided to a specific religious group. If you are putting that forward as a reason I do not support it.

noeffingidea · 11/08/2017 23:11

Lass it was a womens group, not a Muslim women's group. Some of the women who used it were Muslim. Their reasons for using it were their religious beliefs.
Seems clear cut to me. Other users have their own reasons, Muslim women have their religious beliefs.
I suspect that many of these women only sessions wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for the demand from Muslim women. But we mustn't pander to them according to you.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 11/08/2017 23:17

No we should not pander to any religious group which thinks perfectly normal activities must be segregated for no good reason except because they must.

I very much doubt it was the demand from Muslim women which resulted in this. The swimming pool in my home town with a Muslim population of none when I lived there had women only sessions.

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/08/2017 23:18

I wish my local pool had that many sessions available to swim.

Just because your local pool has that many sessions doesn't mean everyone else's local pool has the same.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 11/08/2017 23:23

And indeed still does have women only sessions , despite being one of the least diverse places in the UK. It is more than possible to justify the provision of women only sessions without dragging religion into it.

noeffingidea · 11/08/2017 23:24

Lass you are hard work, aren't you?
My pool with a Muslim population of none doesn't have any women only sessions. So there you go.

noeffingidea · 11/08/2017 23:33

Lass it is possible to justify the provision of women only sessions without dragging religion into it.
The fact remains that many of the customers who use these sessions are religious, who wish to use them for religious reasons. As I was explaining to the poster who I adressed my original post on this subject to, who didn't understand why some women wanted women only sessions when she was happy to swim in mixed sex sessions.
Not sure why you have a bee in your bonnet about this particular point.
Single sex sessions don't have to be 'justified' , other than there being a demand for it, and falling within the law. People having religious beliefs doesn't negate either of those points.
