Changing gender without any medical care/advice/opinion - just saying 'I'm a woman' and it being so

I feel so naive right now-I didn't think this would really get to this point: So they actually want to make it possible to turn around and say, 'I am a man/woman' without any kind of doctor's confirmation of gender dysphoria?

What the fuck is this going to do to women's prisons? How many female criminals will end up abused, raped, killed by MEN in what should be safe places for them?! This is nothing to do with trans people-this is just going to be taken advantage of by predatory men.

Interesting that in the same article on self identification the change in laws relating to gay men giving blood are also mentioned.

With no acknowledgement that is now utterly irrelevant if you can self identify.

PencilsInSpace · 23/07/2017 18:02

Willow, the transfusion service already works on self identification. It's already utterly irrelevant. FOI here.

The main consultation on changes to the GRA starts in the autumn.

Datun · 23/07/2017 18:05

I don't understand what the blood transfusion has to do with trans-rights. Transwomen are 49% more likely to have AIDS than the general population. But I don't see why this is being discussed in the same breath as trans rights.

Unless it is another deliberate attempt to conflate the LGB, with the T and ride on their coattails.

misskelly · 23/07/2017 18:11

I can't believe this can go ahead without the government realising that this will create lots of problems. As well as the direct impact on women and girls this will impact of all sorts of statistics that are essential for delivering services.

For example, If you have enough people claiming to be women then all sorts of stats such rates for breast, ovarian or cervical cancer will be skewed as only biological women will have these condition making it look like a reduction has occurred and money or research could go elsewhere.

Will there be a sudden surgeon in men becoming women nearer pension age so they can retire sooner?

VestalVirgin · 23/07/2017 18:14

Transwomen are 49% more likely to have AIDS than the general population.

Which transwomen? I suppose Caitlyn Jenner and Danielle Muscato have a much lower risk than transwomen who actually got surgery and let men penetrate their pseudo-vaginas.

As for blood transfusion, they should just test all the blood they get. Relying on what people believe about themselves isn't safe. And that's assuming people are honest.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 23/07/2017 18:20

That sirbwy had nothing to do with self-identification? Is that it?! Is it that consultation??

PencilsInSpace · 23/07/2017 18:25

Datun, the government announcement is New Action to Promote LGBT Equality

It seems to include changes to the GRA, changes to the rules around when gay and bi men can give blood, as well as the survey for LGBT people.

The doublethink of announcing these at the same time, on the same page is quite breathtaking though.

Datun · 23/07/2017 18:25

Will there be a sudden surgeon in men becoming women nearer pension age so they can retire sooner?

You're behind the times. That's already happening.

Also they are campaigning to have urinals installed in female toilets.

So much for 'just a place to pee, you won't see anything! and nothing about colonising women's spaces to suit sexist men.

PencilsInSpace · 23/07/2017 18:27

No DrinkFeck, the GRA consultation starts in the autumn. They'll probably feed in the survey results though.

Datun · 23/07/2017 18:29

Interestingly, I searched for a synonym for colonising and it gave me

transplanting

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 23/07/2017 18:41

Thanks pencil. It didn't seem right although I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case Hmm I'm hoping it won't be a right cock up!

numberseven · 23/07/2017 18:51

Also they are campaigning to have urinals installed in female toilets.

Shock

So much for dysphoria.

Datun · 23/07/2017 18:55

numberseven

Gender dysphoria exists. But I have since learnt that it is, like every other bloody thing, on a spectrum.

From mild to severe.

Distressing, I utterly agree.

But, men with a cross dressing fetish do not have dysphoria or if they do, it's irrelevant.

According to Stonewall, I am trans. I don't have gender dysphoria.

This is NOT about helping people with gender dysphoria.

It's a political movement and a misogyny magnet.

I know you know that. I'm not getting at you. I'm just fucking furious.

guinnessgirl · 23/07/2017 19:29

This is fucking awful. It's Orwellian. I am genuinely frightened about what will be unleashed if the law is changed to allow people to self identify. It's madness.

clarinsgirl · 23/07/2017 19:30

On the subject of access to women's safe spaces, I'm am the director of a large domestic abuse charity. A condition of much of our funding is that we must offer refuge to males. We do this through dispersed properties (I.e. Not the multi-occupancy refuge). In the 6 years I've worked with the charity we have never needed to provide refuge for an adult male (though we've provided outreach support to many). The dispersed properties are great for women with older male children though. We would not provide refuge to a biological male in our main refuge regardless of how he identified. He would however be provided refuge and support.

We as a charity could manage this legislation but I'm not sure that our situation is the norm.

This madness shows how completely out of touch with reality our government is.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 23/07/2017 19:44

Do you think we could tank back the term CIA woman and demand CIA woman only spaces?

VestalVirgin · 23/07/2017 20:06

Queen, the moment spaces for whatever new name for women you can think up become a thing, there will be males who identify as such.

I don't think it likely that you can get safe spaces for ciswomen (I assume that's what you meant to type?), as the TRAs argue males are a subset of women, like black women, and therefore it would be discrimination to have separate space where they aren't allowed.

But if you succeeded in having facilities set up for ciswomen, the next thing that'd happen is that a male would identify as ciswoman. I mean, they call themselves biological women already. Nothing is too silly for them.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 23/07/2017 20:13

Let's go with CIA then Wink

NoLoveofMine · 23/07/2017 20:30

I agree guinnessgirl. It's extremely concerning and I find it astounding this is now being considered at such a level; how are the dangers inherent in this not being considered, or is it just because women are seen as irrelevant?

IamNotDarling · 23/07/2017 20:36

misskelly makes the excellent point about health issues - I wonder if it is time to lobby groups representing women's health issues to get them to pick up the cause from that angle?

IamNotDarling · 23/07/2017 20:40

Ah, but look at this

www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/07/04/do-transgender-women-need-breast-cancer-screenings/

It depends on if they've transitioned or not, but still it could distract funding from women's health issues.

StormFrontage · 23/07/2017 20:52

I think every woman should respond to that LBGT-only survey. Identify as whatever the fuck you want in order to be allowed to participate.

I once kissed a girl, so I'm bi, right?

thebigbluedustbin · 23/07/2017 21:18

Since there is still such an advantage to being male in my career, I'm going to change my name to the male version and tell everyone I'm a man in a woman's body who identifies as female.

shinynewusername · 23/07/2017 21:33

Be warned, this is a link to the Daily Fail article on the proposals. But I heartily recommend the comments, if you need cheering up.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 23/07/2017 21:45

IAmNotDarling theve got to be fucking kidding. Maybe also smear tests, eh...?
