Changing gender without any medical care/advice/opinion - just saying 'I'm a woman' and it being so

I feel so naive right now-I didn't think this would really get to this point: So they actually want to make it possible to turn around and say, 'I am a man/woman' without any kind of doctor's confirmation of gender dysphoria?

What the fuck is this going to do to women's prisons? How many female criminals will end up abused, raped, killed by MEN in what should be safe places for them?! This is nothing to do with trans people-this is just going to be taken advantage of by predatory men.

OP posts:

I think/hope it's political game playing because Corbyn said Labour would support it so has put it back on the agenda. It would make May seem like even more of an idiot not to respond to that and she's in a weak position.

BertrandRussell · 23/07/2017 08:54

"Why the fuck is this in feminism chat
Ffs this is news that affects ALL WOMEN AND GIRLS"
While feminism only affects bitter ugly hairy women in dungarees? Hmm

glenthebattleostrich · 23/07/2017 08:54

Because everytime a trans critical thread appears on any of the boards the handmaidens appear to tell us all feminists are evil and guilty of literal violence and we are responsible for every trans death since the beginning of time. Then MNHQ appear and tell us to be nice girls. It's often better to garner opinion in a supportive topic before heading to the main boards.

OP, I can only hope that Ms Greening will be less vocal on this than Maria Miller (who said all feminists were just wrong and didn't understand).

What can we do, we can write to Ms Greening and our local MPs (mine is fucking rediculous and patronising but will still be getting a letter).

We can boycott companies / sites who are buying into this shit, the science museum in London and the Barbican to me 2, and write to them and their donors to state that as they have mysogynistic and regressive policies we'll no longer be supportive.

But most importantly, talk to people about this. So many of my friends are unaware of the actual consequences of this, particularly on their children. Be vocal and be prepared.

And get angry. Stop pandering to this bullshit. I refuse to have my womanhood defined by .6% of the population

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 23/07/2017 08:55

On the subject of the BBC, maybe Chris Evans or Gary Lineker would like to identify as gender fluid? They wouldn't actually have to do anything, but it would solve the Beeb's gender pay scandal at a single stroke. Win-win for auntie - "Our highest earning individual is a member of an oppressed minority, look what lovely employers we are, and most importantly, xe , is not a man, so stop whining about non-men's pay."

glenthebattleostrich · 23/07/2017 08:58

Herat, DD won't be going up to brownies because of GGUKs policy. So they have lost her, the friends we would take and me as a volunteer.

But that's exactly the thing we should be discussing with our friends.

On the plus side, at least the media are beginning to publish transcritical pieces.

AssignedMentalAtBirth · 23/07/2017 08:59

I HAVE been talking to people about this. It has taken me 6 months to convince DH that this is real. We even had arguments about me 'going on about it' as he thought it would never happen. I have also been going on about to friends and they think I'm a little nuts.

But now, now I'm not going to shut up about it.

WhattheChuff · 23/07/2017 09:00

God almighty, this can't be happening. Would a mass protest of women, no surgery or intent to live as 'men' just declaring themselves men have any effect?
I mean, stooping to Mescato's level of 'trans' and taking the fucking piss? If every woman did that imagine the reaction: "well, you can't all be men..."

This needs to reach mainstream news and be bellowed from the rooftops. This is fucking dangerous.

Bedsettee · 23/07/2017 09:04

I'm beyond angry about this.

My only hope that whilst it will be a disaster for women short term once we stop going out shopping/spending money in bars etc because we don't want to be confronted by men in traditionally women only spaces the tide will turn. When heterosexual men "on the pull" are confronted with more blokes in dresses than actual women on a night out or actually no women full stop as the fetishes are mainly heterosexual again the tide will turn.

However I fully accept what I'm saying is detrimental to transwomen with body dysmorphia and I feel sorry for that group.

AssignedMentalAtBirth · 23/07/2017 09:05

Any twitter users on here? We need a protest hashtag. Any ideas?

AssignedMentalAtBirth · 23/07/2017 09:08

@MNHQ - Please, can you support us now? You can't sit on the fence anymore. Please, help us

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 23/07/2017 09:08

No, that's not a solution unfortunately Bedsettee. It ends up in a kind of self-imposed Handmaid's tail/Afghanistan under the Taliban type sex segregation with women excluded from public spaces - which of course plays right into the hands of MRAs who would actually really, really like that as an outcome.

VestalVirgin · 23/07/2017 09:08

Why have we been driven here? Can we not post in normal chat?

Sadly, the opinion that women should have human rights is apparently a niche opinion.

If this thing does actually happen, I will be taking full advantage. I will change my gender to be a man. Can't wait to walk around on a hot day with my tits out. Because men are allowed to do that.

I will identify as the gender whose toilet is emptiest that day.

We should all take advantage. Then it won't be long before men want to change things back.

jellyfrizz · 23/07/2017 09:09

Changing birth certificates really concerns me. It's like trying to erase the past or the truth.

To be truly trans inclusive we should be looking for a society where people can present however they want whether or not it matches your birth cert, not encouraging people to erase their past. It's really sinister.

And gender isn't even on birth certificates. It's biological sex.

Datun · 23/07/2017 09:10

Oscha

Can you ask for this to be moved to AIBU? It has far more traffic. You could say that you thought this would never happen.

You might well get people objecting, but for every commentor they will be 100 lurkers.

Women need to wake up.

For what it's worth, I think you will get fewer objections than previously.

Eminybob · 23/07/2017 09:11

Why just ask the LGBT population? Being T has fuck all to do with being L G or B Confused. I've never understood why it's been associated with sexuality.
Anyway they need to consult with whole of the population, and actually listen to how women feel about this. It genuinely scares me that this is going to happen. It's going to completely erode women's rights.

MineKraftCheese · 23/07/2017 09:17

@AssignedMentalAtBirth How did you get your DH to see the light? We argue about it a lot and then he doesn't want to engage because I get quite angry. Not at him! At the situation as I try to explain it. But I can understand how that is offputting, I don't like talking to angry people either!

Any tips? Sad

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 23/07/2017 09:24

They SAY they're going to consult the LGBT population.

Somehow I doubt they'll be interested in the views of the many lesbians who think this is a shit idea.

Baalam · 23/07/2017 09:24

i have a little girl who is on a sports talent pathway for female players.

That means shit now.

Datun · 23/07/2017 09:25

MineKraftCheese

You could tell him that he is transphobic for not considering a man with a penis, identifying as a woman, as a potential sexual partner.

You could point him towards autogynephilia.

MineKraftCheese · 23/07/2017 09:28

Thanks @Datun. Smile

Parietal · 23/07/2017 09:28

How about if we declare ourselves male and then apply to join the men's clubs - the atheneum, the Garrick, the Groucho club and muirfield and any other male-only clubs

Baalam · 23/07/2017 09:29

surely we can challenge the primogeniture rule now? that is based purely on sex

Igneococcus · 23/07/2017 09:30

More comments on the Times article now and there is some heartening opposition to it, I only scanned the 35 replies and couldn't find a supportive one.

Datun · 23/07/2017 09:32

One of the things that really upsets me about this possible legislation is that, statistically, initially it won't affect that many people.

Maybe in towns, cities, areas with a significant LGBT community. But the trans community is very small.

It will take time for the repercussions and implications to come to light.

And the drip, drip of cultural acceptance will be going hand-in-hand with that.

Meanwhile every paedophile in the country can access children any time they like. Legitimately and I n a state of undress.

A man gazing at children with an unseen raging hard-on is going to be something that no one can object to.

'He's looking at me funny, and I think he's a perv', will have no verifiable evidence to back it up.

If you take it to its logical conclusion, it doesn't matter that he is getting turned on anyway. There is no law to say a 'woman' can't get aroused in a changing room.

Dear God. Why does no one see this?!

Bedsettee · 23/07/2017 09:35

I agree Hedgehog and I'm not saying it is the answer but sadly it may very well be the reality that things become extreme for women before the doubters reach peak trans. With a teenage daughter it fills me with dread.
