Son not welcome at sewing workshop

Cheryl39 · 20/07/2017 21:15

Just tried to sign up for me, my 16 year old daughter and 18 year old son to join a one day sewing workshop and the tutor was very unwelcoming about my son joining. She said the workshops are mainly attended by women and the group as a whole might be uncomfortable talking about women's issues with a young man present. I feel really sad about this and so have not signed up.....is the tutor being discriminatory......what are your thoughts?

The thread has really pissed me off. The total destruction of women only spaces (even my fucking work bathroom is now gender neutral), is why I'm trying to save my local WI.

BlueFlying · 21/07/2017 14:30

@toosexyforyahshirt equally she would have mentioned it if it was making cushions.

That's a separate issue though. You can't claim anything that sounds a bit girly as a womens only space, its counter productive! I'm very big into women only spaces, but they can't be arbitrarily grabbed for no good reason.

Why? That wouldn't change the question, whereas undressing would, massively.

If we say men can never understand what it means to be a woman we could equally argue that as women we cannot truly understand what it means to be a man. But ultimately we are all members of the human race. We need unity.

I completely agree with all that. I have no idea what it's like to be a man. I would like to see unity. We are all human.

I'd be delighted to see any man fight for the rights of women.

It always makes me laugh when people say feminists exclude men. You can't exclude a man, or anyone, from feminism.

Anyone can go to the marches, write to their MP, lobby Parliament, donate money, volunteer, etc. No one stops them.

But strangely, it's never about that. It's never about actually being a feminist, or 'doing' feminism.

It's about the name and the spaces.

Nonibaloni · 21/07/2017 14:39

Um, if a person was looking, for a underground women's rights meeting hidden as a "knitting group" where would one look?
I can't think how to ask it a way that convinces I'm not trying to inflitrate. Or does one up and prove themselves female to an existing member?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/07/2017 14:41

noni

There is probably a handshake

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/07/2017 14:42

noni

Or find a really hard knitting stitch and ask for their help

If they look panicked then its a secret underground feminist group

If they dont look panicked then its a knitting group

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/07/2017 14:43

Or if it is a room full of women which is actually underground

That's probably it

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/07/2017 14:44

It's all about whether they are knitting effigies or not.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/07/2017 14:44

Look for airholes...

Datun · 21/07/2017 14:46

Closed groups online review your Facebook page.

Then you have to DHL them the pubic hair of five misogynists to prove your credentials.

Hahaha Grin

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/07/2017 14:48

Wait a minute

I have been asking for knitting help and looking for airholes and all i had to do was facebook ?????

Dammit!!!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/07/2017 14:50

Then you have to DHL them the pubic hair of five misogynists to prove your credentials

Only five?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/07/2017 14:50

Would explain the funny looks i have been getting to be fair

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/07/2017 14:52

yet

Does the pubic hair of a misogynist look different then?

Datun · 21/07/2017 14:52

all i had to do was facebook ?????

...and the pube snipping. Very time consuming.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/07/2017 14:53

I bet men woukd post me pubic hair if i looked on the right website

Do you think i would have to pay the postage

Datun · 21/07/2017 14:59

That's cheating.

Anyway you have to declare provenance. They go on The List.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 21/07/2017 15:01

Cheating!!

To be fair i am sure women would send some as well

Want to be all equal opportunities about this...

VestalVirgin · 21/07/2017 16:40

Pubic hair? Not penises? Aw, that kind of group is a bit too soft for my taste.

You can't claim anything that sounds a bit girly as a womens only space, its counter productive!

How is it counter productive?

Men learning knitting is all nice and good, but it doesn't really fight patriarchy.

A feminism that relies on men liking us because we are nice to them is doomed to fail. Women have been nice to men for thousands of years, it just isn't working.

VestalVirgin · 21/07/2017 16:43

Really? What about all the times women were told NO, and we persisted? If we all gracefully took no for an answer we still wouldn't have the vote.

That is NOT AT ALL the same.

Women want access to the public spaces where MEN DECIDE ABOUT WOMEN'S FATES.

Men want access to the PRIVATE SPACES WHERE WOMEN JUST TALK AMONG THEMSELVES.

Are you really, really, really not able to see the difference?

Lurkedforever1 · 21/07/2017 17:26

really op? Shall we all visit beauty salons and wear pretty dresses before asking nicely for feminist issues to be addressed once the men have finished dealing with complex and important man topics? Perhaps if they say no we could cry and act all feeble till they agree.

Fuck that.

toosexy it's not just dv, as said already it is hugely important so otherwise isolated members of some ethnic minorities can attend.

Is it definitely 5 pubic hairs or do I need to dhl a penis or two if I want to join? Or mix and match?

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 21/07/2017 17:59

Is it just me, or is VoiceforReason the sort of poster name that immediately makes one jump to the assumption that the very last thing you're likely to encounter in their posts is either reason or rationality?

Also, I smell something if not fishy, then certainly reminiscent of three day old socks. With button eyes.
