We just need to not get drunk apparently, as genuine rapists will prey on us if we're hammered. Well, that's a relief. I thought there might be a bit more to it than that, but it seems not.

OP posts:

even if they do provoke a few extreme and snarky responses at times.

It's not "snarky". I am incandescent with rage. It is not "good to promote a dialogue" when that dialogue is used to victim blame and flat out state women should or even can protect themselves against rape which men choose to carry out.

Also I should not have said "drink is even less of a factor", it is never a factor. Sorry for that; I was just so angry with what that poster was saying and insinuating women and girls raped by strangers are somehow partly responsible. Drink is never a factor, clothing is never a factor, only the rapist is the factor.

Xenophile · 18/05/2017 16:20

I think the snarky comment was aimed at me.

I'm just fucking tired of people making excuses for men's criminal behaviour.

NoLoveofMine · 18/05/2017 16:22

I'm just fucking tired of people making excuses for men's criminal behaviour.

Very much so. I really shouldn't get so enraged but it's difficult not to; this kind of victim blaming tripe is so abhorrent and misogynistic. That it's proven not to be relevant in the slightest yet still people blame women and girls.

venusinscorpio · 18/05/2017 16:28

At what point do the measures a woman could take to reduce her risk also become measures that will make her life worse and restrict her?

That's the thing isn't it. It's considered unreasonable for women not to restrict her life out of a misguided idea that she will become less attractive to predators. Hence the judgemental attitudes when she has the bad luck to be targeted by a rapist. No one is responsible for their own rape.

RebelRogue · 18/05/2017 17:01

Ched Evans should go fuck himself. Up the arse. With a chair.

RebelRogue · 18/05/2017 17:03

User let's just say suddenly no women were drinking anymore and were covered from head to toe. Do you honestly believe that (stranger)rapists would stop raping ?

picklemepopcorn · 18/05/2017 17:09

Drink makes it harder to avoid and fight off rapists. For a while after I was raped, I stopped drinking completely.
I advise my daughters not to drink to excess so they can protect themselves from falling over, bumping into stuff, and making themselves more vulnerable to rapists.
I advise my sons not to drink to excess for all the same above, and so they don't get confused about consent.

He is beyond belief. Just sickening.

If theres a difference between drunk and dead drunk and you pick up a woman, how do you tell?

Xenophile · 18/05/2017 17:13

Jean Hatchet strikes again.

NoLoveofMine · 18/05/2017 17:17

How can women and girls "avoid" rapists? Never go out? Never live with any male?

The only thing which makes women and girls vulnerable to rapists is being female. The only thing which makes rapists rape is them making a choice to rape.

franciemczoo · 18/05/2017 17:21

That wanker and all men like him need to abide by these rules. It's tongue in cheek but is true!

Drink makes it harder to avoid and fight off rapists.

Pickle, I am sorry you were raped but it appalls me that you think you were in some part to blame.

Drink does not make it harder to avoid rape. Woman cannot avoid rape because we do not know what a rapist looks like. He could be your boss, your mate, your brother, your neighbour... Staying sober will not help us avoid the entire male population, which would be the only way to avoid rape.

I agree intoxication may impede your ability to defend yourself but so does being female, too short, too thin, too fat, too old, too young, too unfit, not knowing self defense or martial arts. We don't blame women for any of that do we?

Only men can prevent rape by not raping women.

PoochSmooch · 18/05/2017 17:31

Love Jean Hatchet. Also love the rape prevention tips, franciemczoo.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 18/05/2017 17:31

All this ridiculous advice says is "try to make sure someone else is raped not you"

Yes - so much this to the PP who posted it. It's also complete baloney anyway. I got blind drunk wearing "provocative" clothing many times and nothing happened. When did I get raped? When I took the advice of my close male friend and allowed him to walk me home from a late study session.

PoochSmooch · 18/05/2017 17:34

Actually, in my younger days, on occasion, drink made me more feisty. I told someone trying to mug me to go and fuck himself because I didn't have any money anyway. He slunk off.

But when it came to being raped, I sobered up the second I realised what was happening, whereupon I froze.

KingKongHadABigDong · 18/05/2017 17:37

Gross and vile.

scallopsrgreat · 18/05/2017 17:59

Ched knows he raped that woman. He knows.

gluteustothemaximus · 18/05/2017 18:15

Having been raped both when drunk and sober, I can confirm the only unchanging factor was the rapist.

Women, stop drinking. Men, carry on as normal.

Rape is in your hands ladies, watch out for those genuine rapists (as oppose to the ched evans kind).

Jesus. Too tired to bang head against brick wall.

gluteustothemaximus · 18/05/2017 18:27

When you've sat with your friend in hospital, that you hardly recognise because she's been beaten so badly, holding her hand whilst she tries to tell the police what happened, when she has to wait 6 months for an AIDS test, when her attacker pleads not guilty so she has to go through the ordeal of a trial...

and they bring up her sexual history and ask how much she'd had to drink. That's when you feel anger you did not know existed Angry

Ched's 'advice' would have made no difference that night.

Xenophile · 18/05/2017 18:31

Oh gluteus, I am so sorry. You being there for your friend might have been what saved her sanity, you're good people. Flowers

MrsDoylesTeabags · 18/05/2017 18:32

Wow, he'll never finish hounding her will he? What a disgusing creature he is.

I wonder if he is aware that some women get raped while they are sober?

Hmm, heres a thought. Maybe it's not victims who case rape but rapist who case rape. Or maybe thats a bit to much of a stretch for people like him

NoLoveofMine · 18/05/2017 18:38

I hope you and your friend are alright gluteustothemaximus (and hope that doesn't sound trite).

That's the reality of rape. The only one in any way responsible is the attacker. The only way to prevent it is rapists stop perpetrating such abhorrent attacks.

gluteustothemaximus · 18/05/2017 18:41

Xenophile - thank you x

She was incredibly strong. I admire her so much for going through it all, to get him off the streets. He did go away, but probably out now Sad

Edsheeranalbumparty · 18/05/2017 18:44

Ched knows he raped that woman. He knows.

Yep.

corlan · 18/05/2017 18:48

I thought Ched Evans was a convicted rapist.
What am I missing?
